A set of samples of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites with Teflon inclusions in the shape of pentagram have been specifically designed and fabricated for the purpose of assessing the efficacy and practicality of terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy (TDS) system in non-destructive evaluation (NDE), in side-by-side comparison with X-ray computed tomography (CT), and ultrasonic imaging. The samples feature systematic variation of Teflon inclusions of a variety of thicknesses and placement depths. An improved THz imaging algorithm is proposed and demonstrated to enhance the capability of THz-TDS detection by adding an appropriate window for sampling the reflected time-domain waveform a posteriori. Additionally, image fusion algorithm based on block segmentation is applied to combine multiple imaging detection results, leading to further improvement of the final defect detection capability. Comparative analysis of the detection results among THz-TDS, X-ray CT, and ultrasonic imaging is carefully carried out to assess the merits and disadvantages of each technique, and to attempt to find a proper place for THz-TDS imaging in the traditional arsenal of NDE tools.
Antibacterial characteristics of glycinin basic polypeptide against Staphylococcus aureus
Jie Yang,Gui-Jin Sun,Ying-Qiu Li,Kai-Yu Cui,Hai Zhen Mo 한국식품과학회 2016 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.25 No.5
This paper aims to study the antibacterial action of glycinin basic polypeptide (GBP) on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Herein, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of GBP against S. aureus was 0.2 mg/mL. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging showed that GBP seriously damaged the morphology of the S. aureus cells. GBP (0.8 mg/mL) enhanced the relative release of β- galactosidase to 25.48% when compared to the control. The activity of the respiratory-chain dehydrogenase of S. aureus decreased with increasing GBP concentration. GBP could cause a leakage of intracellular substances. Additionally, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) demonstrated that S. aureus bacterial proteins decreased in response to the time period of treating the bacterial cells with GBP. These results indicate that GBP could remarkably inhibit S. aureus and is, therefore, a potential food preservative.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is of great significance in high-temperature aeroengine applications for large-surface-area TiAl laminate composites to be fabricated into Ti-Al3Ti parts by plastic forming and subsequent vacuum hot pressing. Then the original layer thicknesses have an important influence on the interface bonding and mechanical properties of TiAl laminate composites, but only few reports about it have been published so far. In the present study, vacuum hot pressing was employed to fabricate TiAl laminate composites using Ti and Al foils of different thickness. The resulting interface bond and mechanical properties of TiAl laminate composites were then studied to determine the optimum sheet configuration and thickness. To further assess their formability and develop a forming limit diagram (FLD), 0.1/0.15 TiAl laminate composites were operated on bending and forming tests to provide guidance for subsequent plastic forming of complex geometries. The results indicated that hot pressed laminates composed of alternating 0.1 (Al) and 0.15 (Ti) mm thick sheets exhibited enhanced superior interface bonding and mechanical properties compared with 0.2/0.25 and 0.4/0.4 sheets. The 0.1/0.15 TiAl laminate composites had excellent bending characteristics and reasonable formability. Fabrication of a drawn cup further confirms the potential for hot pressed TiAl laminate composites to be fabricated into complex shapes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The large-surface-area TiAl laminate composites were prepared by vacuum hot pressing. </LI> <LI> The effect of original layer thicknesses on the interface bonding and mechanical properties was investigated. </LI> <LI> Bending and forming tests proved the excellent bending characteristics and reasonable formability </LI> <LI> Fabrication of a drawn cup further confirmed the potential for complex shapes. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Based on their respective antitumor and thrombolytic activities, the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin C2 (SEC2) and staphylokinase (Sak) were chosen for the construction of the novel chimeric proteins Sak-linker- SEC2 and SEC2-linker-Sak using a linker composed of nine Ala residues. Both chimeric proteins possessed nearly the same PBMC proliferation stimulating activity and antitumor activity as SEC2 and thrombolytic activity as Sak. Neither the SEC2 or Sak component of each chimeric protein affected the activity of the other component. The results presented in this study provide a possible strategy to prevent and cure tumor thrombus.

Background/Aims: Cigarette smoking is an important modifiable risk factor in kidney disease progression. However, the underlying mechanisms for this are lacking. This study aimed to assess whether nicotine (NIC), a major toxic component of cigarette smoking, would exacerbates tacrolimus (TAC)-induced renal in-jury. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were treated daily with NIC, TAC, or both drugs for 4 weeks. The influence of NIC on TAC-caused renal injury was examined via renal function, histopathology, oxidative stress, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and programmed cell death (apoptosis and autophagy). Results: Both NIC and TAC significantly impaired renal function and histopathology, while combined NIC and TAC treatment aggravated these parameters beyond the effects of either alone. Increased oxidative stress, ER stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokine expressions, and programmed cell death from either NIC or TAC were also aggravated by the two combined. Conclusions: Our observations suggest that NIC exacerbates chronic TAC nephrotoxicity, implying that smoking cessation may be beneficial for transplant smokers taking TAC.

Two new anthraquinones, melrubiellin C (1) andmelrubiellin D (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Melandriumfirmum Rohrbach, together with eight known compounds(3–10). The structures of these compounds wereelucidated using 1Dand 2DNMR(COSY,HMQC,HMBCandNOESY) experiments. All isolated compounds were tested fortheir cytotoxicity against NCI-H460, Hep G2, MKN-28 andA-549 cells.Of these 10 compounds,1 and 2 exhibitedmoderatecytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 9.54 to 32.41 lM.

Predatory natural enemies are major insect species in cotton field ecosystems. Microbes that live inside these insects play essential roles in vital host activities, however, the microbiota of these insects have not been well characterized. In this study, we used Illumina 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to investigate microbial diversity of the natural enemies Chrysoperla sinica, Harmonia axyridis, Propylaea japonica and Orius similis from a cotton field in northern China. The microbial diversity of C. sinica was low and its dominant bacterial community were Rickettsia (87.78%) and Wolbachia (6.29%). The microbial community of O. similis was more diverse than that of C. sinica. The microbial diversity of H. axyridis and P. japonica was higher, and they had similar dominant phyla, which included Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Their common dominant bacterial community were Romboutsia, Escherichia-Shigella, Bacteroides, Terrisporobacter, Enterobacter, Lactobacillus, Fusobacterium, Actinobacillus, Sphaerochaeta, Bacteroidales_S24-7_group and Cyanobacteria. This study also forms the basis for further study on the microbiota of natural enemies from different habitats.
