        Juvenile hormone regulation on the flight capability of Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae)

        The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is considered a major economic threat in many regions worldwide. In order to better understand the flight capacity of B. dorsalis and its physiological basis, the functions and regulatory roles of juvenile hormone (JH) in the flight muscle of B. dorsalis were studied under a controlled environment. JH titer of B. dorsalis varied with age and sex. Females have higher JH titers and better flight capabilities than males, given that the increase in JH also corresponded to the ovarian development and maturation in females. The flight duration and distance of both males and females increased with the gradual increase of JH titer after adult emergences. Both JH titer and flight capability peaked in 15-d-old adult and declined subsequently with age. Flight activity stimulated the production of JH as adults flown for 24 h on the flight mills have the highest JH titers compare to adults flown on shorter flight durations. Adults treated with 0.5 µg and 5 µg of JH III were able to fly long durations and long distances, nevertheless when JH titer was too low or too high, it would restrict the flight ability of the fly. The mutual reinforcement of JH and flight activity provides fundamental understanding on the physiological aspects of the flight capability and dispersal, which facilitates strategies for the long-term control of this destructive pest.

        Anatomical Observations of Adventitious Bud Regeneration from Leaf Explants of Ziziphus jujube Mill. ‘Huizao’

        The histological process of adventitious shoot regeneration from the leaf explants of Zizyphus jujuba ‘Huizao’was reported in this study. This is the first report on the detailed histological process of direct shoot regeneration from leaf explants in Z. jujube. Shoot regeneration was obtained from woody plant medium (WPM) supplemented with 2.27 μM thidiazuron (TDZ), 1.07 μM α-naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) and 2.94 μM silver nitrate (AgNO3) for 10days in the dark followed by 3 weeks at a 14 hours photoperiod. The adventitious buds mostly formed from leaf veins and petioles, and the further histological studies revealed that there were multiple vascular bundles around leaf veins and the adaxial side of explants, and the adventitious buds directly originated from the parenchymatous cells around the vascular bundles without the intervening callus phase. After 3 days of culture, the parenchymatous cells started dividing and meristemoids formed thereafter. The meristematic cells continued division and subsequently gave rise to bud primordia. Well-developed shoot buds through direct organogenesis was achieved after 20 days of culture.

        Identity-based Deniable Authenticated Encryption for E-voting Systems

        Deniable authentication (DA) is a protocol in which a receiver can generate an authenticator that is probabilistically indistinguishable from a sender. DA can be applied in many scenarios that require user privacy protection. To enhance the security of DA, in this paper, we construct a new deniable authenticated encryption (DAE) scheme that realizes deniable authentication and confidentiality in a logical single step. Compared with existing approaches, our approach provides proof of security and is efficient in terms of performance analysis. Our scheme is in an identity-based environment; thus, it avoids the public key certificate-based public key infrastructure (PKI). Moreover, we provide an example that shows that our protocol is applicable for e-voting systems.

      • Investigation on Ploidy Level and Reproductive Characteristic of Whipgrass

        26 wild accessions and 2 cultivars of whip grass (Hemarthria compress a (L. f.) R. Br.), which collected in the fields of Sichuan Agricultural University (SAU), were used to study on their ploidy level and reproductive characteristics. The results showed that there were 4 tetraploids (14.3%), H028, H029, H052, H053, chromosome numbers were 2n=4x=36, and 24 hexaploids (85.7%), 2n=6x=54. There was no significant correlation between geographical distribution and ploidy level in this research. From 2006 to 2008, hexaploids set few seeds, but all of the tetraploids set some seeds more or less. H052 had the highest seed set (11.22%). The tetraploids had potential for seed production, especially H052, it should be possible to obtain hybrids by cross-pollination in the future.

        Electrical and magnetic properties of BiFe0.97−xMn0.03ZnxO3 thin films with different Zn content synthesized by chemical solution deposition (CSD)

        BiFe0.97−xMn0.03ZnxO3 (BFMZ) thin films with various Zn contents (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.1) were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by a chemical solution deposition (CSD) technique. The crystal structures of BFMZ thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the Zn content on the magnetic, dielectric properties, and leakage current of these BFMZ films were thoroughly investigated. The analysis by XRD demonstrated that all the BFMZ thin films were of a polycrystalline rhombohedral perovskite structure with the space group R3c. For the BFMZ thin films, slim magnetic hysteresis (M-H) loops were observed, and the saturated magnetization (Ms) of the BFMZ thin film increased with an increase of the Zn content. Compared to the other BFMZ thin films with Zn content between 0.01 and 0.1, the BFMZ thin film with Zn content x = 0 has the largest dielectric constant and the smallest dielectric loss. In addition, With co-doping of Mn2+ and Zn2+ ions at Fe3+ sites in the BFMZ thin films, the leakage current density increased with an increase of the Zn concentration in the films.

        The Effects of Fu Zi on Changes in the Body Heat of Dogs

        The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Fu Zi on changes in the body heat of dogs. Twelve clinically healthy dogs were divided into two groups: the control group (six dogs) and the experimental group (six dogs). The control group was made to ingest normal saline mixed with canned meat, while the experimental group was made to ingest the Fu Zi solution mixed with canned meat. The infrared thermographic system was used to determine the level of body heat generated by these dogs. These areas include the dorsocranial (DCr), dorsocaudal (DCd), ventrocranial (VCr), and ventrocaudal (VCd) regions at pretreatment and were determined at 10, 20, 30, 50, 90, 120, 240, and 360 minutes after treatment for each of these areas. The results showed a tendency toward increased body heat until 30 minutes after ingestion of the Fu Zi powder mixed with canned meat. The significant differences in the changes of body heat were detected at 360 minutes in the DCd regions, 20 minutes in the VCr regions, and 30 minutes in the VCd regions between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05). Based from our results, we find that Fu Zi can increase and maintain the dogs’ body heat for at least 6 hours.         Integrated risk assessment method for spent fuel road transportation accident under complex environment

        Current risk assessment of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) transportation has the problem of the incomplete risk factors consideration and the general particle diffusion model utilization. In this paper, the accident frequency calculation and the detailed simulation of the accident consequences are coupled by the integrated risk assessment method. The "man-machine-environment" three-dimensional comprehensive risk indicator system is established and quantified to characterize the frequency of the transportation accidents. Consideration of vegetation, building and turbulence effect, the standard k-ε model is updated to simulate radioactive consequence of leakage accidents under complex terrain. The developed method is applied to assess the risk of the leakage accident in the scene of the typical domestic SNF Road Transportation (SNFRT). The critical risk factors and their impacts on the dispersion of the radionuclide are obtained.

        An investigation of the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of Nd-doped Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 polycrystalline ceramics fabricated by a sol-gel technique

        Nd-modified Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15) ceramics were fabricated by a sol-gel method. The crystal structures of Nd-modified Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15) ceramics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the Nd content on the ferroelectric, dielectric, and magnetic properties of these Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics were thoroughly investigated. The XRD patterns indicated that with an increase of the Nd doped content in Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics, the unwanted impurity phases such as Bi2Fe4O9 and Bi36Fe24O57 are markedly decreased. Clear polarization-electric field (P-E)hysteresis loops were observed for all the Nd-modified Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics and the shape of the P-E loop of the Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics was significantly improved due to the Nd substitution. In addition, slim magnetic hysteresis (M-H)loops in the Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics were also observed, and the saturated magnetization (Ms) of the Bi1 − xNdxFeO3 ceramics also increased with an increase of the Nd content.

        Pd nanoparticles supported on N-doped porous carbons derived from ZIF-67: Enhanced catalytic performance in phenol hydrogenation

        We reported a Pd@CN catalyst made of Pd nanoparticles supported on a N-doped carbon derived fromZIF-67. The CN materials with micro/mesoporous structures were well developed for the loading of Pdnanoparticles and improving the catalytic performances. With the increase of calcination temperature ofZIF-67, the BET surface of CN materials initially increased and then reduced. Moreover, the highercalcination temperature would lead to lower nitrogen content in CN materials, causing lower selectivityof phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone. Our Pd@CN600 catalyst achieved a conversion of ca. 95% and aselectivity of ca. 95%, and exhibited excellent stability during recycling experiments

        Detection of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Using a Duplexed Real-Time PCR Approach With Locked Nucleic Acid-Modified Primers

        Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder mainly caused by homozygous deletions that include exon 7 of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. A nearby paralog gene, SMN2, obstructs the specific detection of SMN1. We optimized a duplexed real-time PCR approach using locked nucleic acid (LNA)-modified primers to specifically detect SMN1. Methods: An LNA-modified primer pair with 3´ ends targeting SMN1 specific sites c.835-44g and c.840C was designed, and its specificity was examined by real-time PCR and Sanger Sequencing. A duplexed real-time PCR approach for amplifying SMN1 and control gene albumin (ALB) was developed. A randomized double-blind trial with 97 fresh peripheral blood samples and 25 dried blood spots (DBS) was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the duplexed approach. This new approach was then used to screen 753 newborn DBS. Results: The LNA-modified primers exhibited enhanced specificity and 6.8% increased efficiency for SMN1 amplification, compared with conventional primers. After stabilizing the SMN1 test by optimizing the duplexed real-time PCR approach, a clinical trial validated that the sensitivity and specificity of our new approach for detecting SMA patients and carriers was 100%. Using this new approach, 15 of the screened 753 newborns were identified as carriers via DBS, while the rest were identified as normal individuals. These data reveal a carrier rate of 1.99% in Hunan province, South Central China. Conclusions: We have developed a novel, specific SMN1 detection approach utilizing real-time PCR with LNA-modified primers, which could be applied to both prenatal carrier and newborn screening.
