Flavones from the Bark of Lindera caudata and Their Anti-Tobacco Mosaic Virus Activity

Two new flavones, 5-hydroxy-8-hydroxymethyl-7,4′-dimethoxy-flavone (1) and 6-hydroxy-8-hydroxymethyl-7,4′-dimethoxy-flavone (2), together with six known flavones (3–8), were isolated from the bark of Lindera caudata. The structures of 1–8 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds 1–8 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity. The results showed that Compounds 1 and 2 showed high anti-TMV activity with inhibition rates of 31.2 and 28.8%, respectively. These values are close to those of positive control.

Objective: To investigate any association between XRCC1 and XRCC3 polymorphisms and outcome of platinum-based chemotherapy in ovarian cancer patients. Methods: With a prospective study design was cases were consecutively collected from January 2005 to January 2007. All 310 included patients were followed-up until the end of January 2010. Genotyping of XRCC1 and XRCC3 polymorphisms was conducted by TaqMan Gene Expression assays. Results: A total of 191 patients died during follow-up. Our study showed a lower survival rate in XRCC1 399 Arg/Arg genotype than Gln/Gln, with a significant increased risk of death (HR=1.69, 95%CI=1.07-2.78). Similarly, those carrying XRCC3 Thr/Thr genotype had a increased risk as compare to the Met/Met genotype, with a HR (95% CI) of 1.90 (1.12-3.41). There was no significant association between XRCC1 Arg194Trp and XRCC1Arg280His gene polymorphisms and ovarian cancer death. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that polymorphisms in DNA repair genes have roles in the susceptibility and survival of ovarian cancer patients.

As a basis of an intelligent driving assist system, an on-line calculation method calculating a desirable driving path based on information and prediction of surrounding traffic environment is developed. The problem is how to use information of traffic jam and signal. This paperreports an automobile optimal driving control system using information of traffic jam and signal based onthe model prediction control to support drivers. Moreover, physical models for information of traffic jam and signal are constructed.

Objective: Pediatric depression is associated with significant functional impairment at school and at work. Recently, we reportedon depression-like behavior in juvenile mice neonatally exposed to dexamethasone (DEX) as a potential animal model for pediatricdepression. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist ketamine has promoted rapid and long-lasting antidepressanteffects in patients with treatment-resistant major depression. This study was conducted to examine whether ketaminehad antidepressant effects in juvenile mice after neonatal DEX exposure. Methods: A single dose (10 mg/kg) of ketamine or vehicle was injected into juvenile mice at days 29-32 after neonatal DEX(or saline) exposure (days 1-3). The sucrose preference test, tail suspension test, and forced swimming test were performed24, 40, and 46 hours, respectively, after injection of ketamine. Results: Ketamine (10 mg/kg) significantly improved depression-like behavior in DEX-treated juvenile mice. Conclusion: This finding suggests that ketamine confers antidepressant effects in an animal model of pediatric depression
Ni Nanoparticle-Graphene Oxide Composites for Speedy and Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) from Wastewater

In this study, Ni nanoparticle supported by graphene oxide (GO) (Ni-GO) is successfully synthesized through hydrothermal synthesis and calcination, and Cr(VI) is extracted from aqueous solution. The morphology and structure of Ni-GO composites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), trans mission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and XRD confirms the high dispersion of Ni nanoparticle after support by GO. Loading Ni on GO can obviously enhance the stability of Ni-GO composites. It can be calculated from TGA that the mass percentage of Ni is about 60.67 %. The effects of initial pH and reaction time on Cr(VI) removal ability of Ni-GO are investigated. The results indicate that the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) is greater than that of bared GO. Ni-GO shows fast removal capacity for Cr(VI) (<25 min) with high removal efficiency. Dynamic experiments show that the removal process conforms to the quasi-second order model of adsorption, which indicates that the rate control step of the removal process is chemical adsorption. The removal capacity increases with the increase of temperature, indicating that the reaction of Cr(VI) on Ni-GO composites is endothermic and spontaneous. Combined with tests and characterization, the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by rapidly adsorption on the surface of Ni-GO and reduction by Ni nanoparticle is investigated. The above results show that Ni-GO can be used as a potential remediation agent for Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater.
Sensory involvement in the SOD1-G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

A subset of patients of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) present with mutation of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), and such mutants caused an ALSlike disorder when expressed in rodents. These findings implicated SOD1 in ALS pathogenesis and made the transgenic animals a widely used ALS model. However, previous studies of these animals have focused largely on motor neuron damage. We report herein that the spinal cords of mice expressing a human SOD1 mutant (hSOD1-G93A), besides showing typical destruction of motor neurons and axons, exhibit significant damage in the sensory system, including Wallerian-like degeneration in axons of dorsal root and dorsal funiculus, and mitochondrial damage in dorsal root ganglia neurons. Thus, hSOD1-G93A mutation causes both motor and sensory neuropathies, and as such the disease developed in the transgenic mice very closely resembles human ALS. Polymers have been used to modulate mechanical strengths and water absorption of construction ormodeling materials as like gypsum. To understand the structure–performance relationship of polymersin hydration and properties of gypsum plaster, several designed carboxyl polyether sulfonates wereinvestigated with comparison of some commercial polymers. It is found that bending strength of thehardened b-hemihydrate plaster is inversely proportional to number of carboxyl groups in the polymerthat retards hydration. The mechanical strengths enhancement is coincident with acceleration of initialhydration, while decrease of mechanical strengths happened with retard of the hydration.
Geometrical and Magnetic Properties of Vanadium Clusters Supported on Graphene

We report ab-initio calculations of vanadium-cluster Vn(n = 2−5) adsorption on graphene sheets. Geometrical and magnetic properties of various adsorption configurations are studied using firstprinciples density-functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation. The geometrical and magnetic properties of vanadium clusters are found to be size-dependent, and the supported graphene sheet could influence the formation of the vanadium clusters. Low-dimensional Vn cluster configurations could be easily formed when they are absorbed on a graphene sheet, and the combined Vn-graphene systems exhibit a nonmagnetic state, which is the most stable magnetic configuration. Our calculations for the geometrical and the magnetic moment properties of Vn-graphene systems may be of interest for some nanotechnological applications.

Malignant glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant brain tumor and despite recent advances in diagnostics and treatment prognosis remains poor. In this retrospective study, we assessed the clinical and radiological parameters, as well as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of 1p19q deletion, in a series of cases. A total of 816 patients with GBM who received surgery and radiation between January 2010 and May 2014 were included in this study. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis were used to find the factors independently influencing patient progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Age at diagnosis, preoperative Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) score, KPS score change at 2 weeks after operation, neurological deficit symptoms, tumor resection extent, maximal tumor diameter, involvement of eloquent cortex or deep structure, involvement of brain lobe, Ki-67 and MMP9 expression level and adjuvant chemotherapy were statistically significant factors (p<0.05) for both PFS and OS in the univariate analysis. Cox proportional hazards modeling revealed that age ${\leq}50$ years, preoperative KPS score ${\geq}80$, KPS score change after operation ${\geq}0$, involvement of single frontal lobe, deep structure involvement, low Ki-67 and MMP9 expression and adjuvant chemotherapy were independent favorable factors (p<0.05) for patient clinical outcomes.
