      • COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN AND BENEFITS OF TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN THE TURPAN VALLEY, XINJIANG AUTONOMOUS REGION OF CHINA

        While western scholars such as Jamal and Gertz (1995), Tosun (2005), Fallon and Kriwoken (2003), usually presume that community participation is critical to sustainable tourism development, Chinese scholar Wenjun Li (2006) boldly states that it is possible for a community to achieve benefits of tourism development despite weak involvement in the planning and management of a tourist destination. Our survey of government officials, tourist business operators and residents in seven locations in the World Heritage-listed Turpan Valley in the Xinjiang province found that top-down, government-led participation is necessary and desirable, and does not detract from stakeholders' perception that they are sharing in the benefits of tourism development in the region.

      • 예술고등학교 학생들의 특기적성을 고려한 프로젝트형 물리 탐구학습

        본 연구는 학습자 중심의 다양한 교수-학습 방법의 모색을 시도하는 교육 여건에 부응하여 물리학습에서 특기적성을 살린 프로젝트형 탐구학습 프로그램을 개발하여, 이를 예술계 고등하교 학생들에게 적용한 후, 학생들의 과학에 관련된 태도가 어떻게 변화했는지를 알아보고, 특기적성용 프로젝트 탐구학습에 대한 학생들의 반응을 살펴보았다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 학습자로 하여금 자신의 수준과 적성에 부합한 과제를 선택하도록 학습 동기를 유발하고 과제를 수행하는 과정을 단계적으로 수준을 높여가면서 학생들 스스로 문제를 해결해 나가는 자기 주도적인 학습이 가능하도록 하였다. 학생들의 프로젝트 수행결과에 대해서는 자기평가와 교사 면담을 통해 평가하도록 하였다. In order to contribute to contemporary educational environment searching for a variety of student-centered learning programs, this study attempts to make desirable project inquiry learning programs for physics educations which help to develop individual student's special ability and his or her aptitude. The programs were applied to the students of an Arts high school. After that this study tried to find out how students' attitudes toward science learning have changed, and how. they reacted to the "project inquiry-learning programs". In this study learners were allowed to choose an assignment for themselves equivalent to their academic ability and aptitude. This kind of activities motivates students for learning, makes them higher the standard of the process carrying out their assignments step by step, and finally enables them to have self-regulated learning, in which they settle the problems on their own. The result of the students' learning were evaluated by the self-evaluation and teachers' interviews with them.

        This study was performed to evaluation the skin and eye irritation of etofenprox 8% and spinosad 4% combination in male New Zealand White rabbits. In skin irritation test, the combination of etofenprox and spinosad did not showed any change of body weight but caused slight skin irritation with the P.I.I. (primary irritation index) value 0.25. The etofenprox and spinosad combination showed severe eye irritation 1 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ocular treatment, having the A.O.I. (acute ocular irritation) value of 37.3. Therefore, these result indicated that the combination of etofenprox and spinosad might be irritant formulation on eye and skin.

        Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activities of Illicium verum Against Antibiotic-Resistant Pathogens

        In recent years, human pathogenic microorganisms have developed multiple drug resistance and caused serious nosocomial infections. In this study, we identified four new antimicrobial compounds from the Chinese herbal medicine Illicium verum and assessed their antibacterial efficacies. The supercritical CO2 and ethanol extracts of Illicium verum showed substantial antibacterial activity against 67 clinical drug-resistant isolates, including 27 Acinetobacter baumannii, 20 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and 20 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The diethyl ether (EE) fraction obtained from partition extraction and supercritical CO2 extracts revealed an antibacterial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 0.15–0.70mg/mL and 0.11mg/mL, respectively. The EE fraction of I. verum showed synergetic effects with some commercial antibiotics. The antimicrobial mechanism was investigated with killing curves and scanning electron microscopy observation. The chemical components of the extracts were analyzed by spectrophotometry; (E)-anethole, anisyl acetone, anisyl alcohol, and anisyl aldehyde exhibited antibacterial activity against different clinical isolates. These extracts from I. verum can be further developed into antibiotic medicines due to their proven antibacterial activity.

      • Fenofibrate Increases Radiosensitivity in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma via Inducing G2/M Arrest and Apoptosis

        Radiation therapy is an important treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, how to promote radiation sensitivity in HNSCC remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the radiosensitizing effects of fenofibrate on HNSCC and explore the underlying mechanisms. HNSCC cell lines CNE-2 and KB were subjected to ionizing radiation (IR), in the presence or absence of fenofibrate treatment. Cell growth and survival, apoptosis and cell cycle were evaluated. In addition, CNE-2 cells were xenografted into nude mice and subjected to IR and/or fenofibrate treatment. The expression of cyclinB and CDK1 was detected by Western blotting. Our results showed that fenofibrate efficiently radiosensitized HNSCC cells and xenografts in mice, and induced apoptosis and G2/M arrest via reducing the activity of the CDK1/cyclinB1 kinase complex. These data suggest that fenofibrate could be a promising radiosensitizer for HNSCC radiotherapy.

        The Application of Radiolabeled Targeted Molecular Probes for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Prostate Cancer

        Radiopharmaceuticals targeting prostate-specific membrane antigens (PSMA) are essential for the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of prostate cancer (PCa), particularly metastatic castration-resistant PCa, for which conventional treatment is ineffective. These molecular probes include [68Ga]PSMA, [18F]PSMA, [Al18F]PSMA, [99mTc]PSMA, and [89Zr]PSMA, which are widely used for diagnosis, and [177Lu]PSMA and [225Ac]PSMA, which are used for treatment. There are also new types of radiopharmaceuticals. Due to the differentiation and heterogeneity of tumor cells, a subtype of PCa with an extremely poor prognosis, referred to as neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC), has emerged, and its diagnosis and treatment present great challenges. To improve the detection rate of NEPC and prolong patient survival, many researchers have investigated the use of relevant radiopharmaceuticals as targeted molecular probes for the detection and treatment of NEPC lesions, including DOTA-TOC and DOTA-TATE for somatostatin receptors, 4A06 for CUB domain-containing protein 1, and FDG. This review focused on the specific molecular targets and various radionuclides that have been developed for PCa in recent years, including those mentioned above and several others, and aimed to provide valuable up-to-date information and research ideas for future studies.

        Study of PD Location in Generators by PD Pulses Propagation

        When a partial discharge takes place at the stator of a generator, the electrical pulse will propagate along the stator bars and the capacitor chains formed by the end part of the stator winds. On the first path, the pulse propagates as a travel wave at slow speed. On the second path, the pulse propagates at quick speed. Based on the data of the experiments on a real 50 MW steam generator, the author has found the pulses can propagate by magnetic field of the stator winding. It was studied that how to locating the partial discharge by signals coming from the different paths, including the features of signals on the two paths at time domain and frequency domain, the measurement frequency rang of the signals, the blind area, the advantage and disadvantage of this method.

        Modal parameter identification in atmospheric turbulence excitation flutter test based on Hilbert-Huang transform

        In flutter tests, particularly in wind tunnel experiments, the aircraft model is generally excited by atmospheric turbulence, which increases the difficulty in precisely identifying the modal parameters. To estimate the modal parameters under turbulence excitation for flutter boundary prediction, a technique was developed and evaluated depending on the HilbertHuang transform in this paper. The results of simulated flutter cases show that the developed technique can identify modal frequencies more precisely than the modal damping ratio, while the estimation of the modal damping ratio is quite good. Finally, in a wind tunnel flutter test, good flutter boundaries were predicted in advance by using the modal parameters identified from the turbulence response at low airspeeds.

      • Antitumor Activity of Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Trichostatin A in Osteosarcoma Cells

        Background: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been reported to induce cell growth arrest, apoptosis and differentiation of tumor cells. The present study aimed to examine the effects of trichostatin A (TSA), one such inhibitor, on the cell cycle, apoptosis and invasiveness of osteosarcoma cells. Methods: MG-63 cells were treated with TSA at various concentrations. Then, cell growth and apoptosis were determined by 3-(4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and TUNEL assays, respectively; cell cycling was assessed by flow cytometry; invasion assays were performed with the transwell Boyden Chamber system. Results: MTT assays revealed that TSA significantly inhibited the growth of MG-63 cells in a concentration and time dependent manner. TSA treated cells demonstrated morphological changes indicative of apoptosis and TUNEL assays revealed increased apoptosis of MG-63 cells after TSA treatment. Flow cytometry showed that TSA arrested the cell cycle in G1/G2 phase and annexin V positive apoptotic cells increased markedly. In addition, the invasiveness of MG-63 cells was inhibited by TSA in a concentration dependent manner. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that TSA inhibits the proliferation, induces apoptosis and inhibits invasiveness of osteosarcoma cells in vitro. HDAC inhibitors may thus have promise to become new therapeutic agents against osteosarcoma.
