PTU에 의한 간염의 발생은 매우 드물게 발생하는 것으로 알려져 있으나 저자들은 Graves씨 병으로 진단 받고 propylthiouracil 투여를 받고있던 환자에서 중증의 급성 간염이 발생한 1예를 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. Propylthiouracil is widely used to treat patients with hyperthyroidism. This drug has been associated with severe hepatotoxicity rarely. We presented the case of jaundice and profound liver dysfunction from a 23-year old woman treated with propylthiouracil for hyperthyroidism. Viral, metabolic, and autoimmune liver disease could be excluded and liver biopsy revealed a pattern of acute hepatitis. After discontinuing the drug, there was a progressive resolution of hepatic symptoms and decrease in biochemical data of the liver. Despite propylthiouracil induced hepatitis in rare case, patients receiving propylthiouracil are exposed to develope severe hepatotoxicity. Therefore it might be advisable to monitor level of the transaminase on regular base from patients receiving propylthiouracil.

The main goals of the study were to investigate the sediment quality and trace metal distribution in sediment of Kwangyang Bay, south coastal of Korea. Surface sediment sampling were performed in November, 2000 and February and March, 2001. The concentration of H₂S, IL and COD in sediment were measured by a manual of the Department of Marine Environment of Korea. The extracted trace metals Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn in sediments mean analyzed by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer with an instrument of model Shimadzu AA-6701F. H₂S, IL and COD in the surface sediment were 1.3 mg/g, 5.9 % and 15.0 mg/g, respectively. The mean content of Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn were 1523 mg/kg, 4.799 mg/kg, 1.321 mg/kg 9.285 mg/kg and 9.353 mg/kg, respectively. All of these measured trace metals level were over the other reported trace metal level in sediment of coastal area. According to histograms, the content of H₂S, IL and COD and trace metals in sediment of this study were affected by artificial activities rather than natural process.

Background : Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) is cultivate for many years in one place, the occurrence of root rot place, the occurrence of root rot caused by soil pathogens increases as the elderly grow, and the harvesting rate of 6-year-old ginseng tends to be as low as 70%. Ginseng continuous cultivation disorder is mainly caused by root rot disease, and the disease incidence increases rapidly when continuously cultivated in the soil where ginseng is grown. Ginseng is less prone to root rot in virgin soils, but the disease incidence increases rapidly in succession, causing great damage. Therefore, it is possible to cultivate it again after 10 years or more after the ginseng harvest, and ginseng farms are looking for places where ginseng has not been cultivated. Therefore, this study was conducted to reduce the occurrence of ginseng root rot by treating the soil fumigation agent where ginseng was grown and to examine whether ginseng can be grown. Methods and Results : As a result of conducting tests to develop soil nutrient management and fumigation treatment technology to alleviate ginseng serial cultivation disorders, the aboveground plant height by type of soil fumigant was high in Dazome granules and methamsodium treatment, and lowest in no treatment. There was a high tendency in sodium treatment. Root rot pathogen density (C. destructans) was highest in no treatment and low in methamsodium treatment, and residual pesticides (320 species) were not detected in all treatments of soil fumigant. Conclusion : In order to alleviate ginseng serial cultivation disorders, a test was conducted to control root rot during soil fumigation. Even when methamsodium was treated, the above-ground and underground growth tended to be excellent and the density of root rot pathogens tended to be low.

<P>IL-23 is a heterodimeric cytokine composed of a p19 subunit and the p40 subunit of IL-12. IL-23 has proinflammatory activity, inducing IL-17 secretion from activated CD4(+) T cells and stimulating the proliferation of memory CD4(+) T cells. We investigated the pathogenic role of IL-23 in CD4(+) T cells in mice lacking the IL-1R antagonist (IL-1Ra(-/-)), an animal model of spontaneous arthritis. IL-23 was strongly expressed in the inflamed joints of IL-1Ra(-/-) mice. Recombinant adenovirus expressing mouse IL-23 (rAd/mIL-23) significantly accelerated this joint inflammation and joint destruction. IL-1beta further increased the production of IL-23, which induced IL-17 production and OX40 expression in splenic CD4(+) T cells of IL-1Ra(-/-) mice. Blocking IL-23 with anti-p19 Ab abolished the IL-17 production induced by IL-1 in splenocyte cultures. The process of IL-23-induced IL-17 production in CD4(+) T cells was mediated via the activation of Jak2, PI3K/Akt, STAT3, and NF-kappaB, whereas p38 MAPK and AP-1 did not participate in the process. Our data suggest that IL-23 is a link between IL-1 and IL-17. IL-23 seems to be a central proinflammatory cytokine in the pathogenesis of this IL-1Ra(-/-) model of spontaneous arthritis. Its intracellular signaling pathway could be useful therapeutic targets in the treatment of autoimmune arthritis.</P>
