A genomic glimpse of B chromosomes in cichlids
Cesar Martins,Maryam Jehangir 한국유전학회 2021 Genes & Genomics Vol.43 No.3
Background B chromosomes (Bs) are extra karyotype elements in addition to A chromosomes and are found in all major eukaryotic taxa. Among hundreds of investigated species, cichlid fshes have emerged as an interesting group of model and have contributed to unravel the complex biology of B chromosome. Objective We review the current state of knowledge on B chromosome investigation in cichlid fsh and discuss the recent genomic advances over gene and sequences hunting on Bs and their impact on the current concept of B chromosomes. Results The Bs of cichlids have been under the subject of classical cytogenetics and high scale DNA, RNA and epigenetics analysis and a list of B chromosome genes and functional sequences has been generated. B chromosomes of cichlids are restricted to females in some species and are enriched with genes, relics of genes, transposable elements and sequences transcribing for many signifcant biological functions. Diverse potentially functional sequences have been described in the B chromosome of cichlids and could infuence important biological characteristics as well seems to afect transcription and epigenetic modifcations of the whole genome. Conclusion One of the most enigmatic characteristics of Bs in cichlids is their genic content related to cell cycle and chromosome structure, and their infuence over sex rates. The relationship of Bs with cell cycle and sex determination looks like to be connected with the drive of the Bs during cell divisions.

Cesare M. Scartozzi,Roberto Orsi,Maximilian Ernst,Henry Martin 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2021 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.45 No.4
This article assesses the significance of renewable energy technologies in the integration of the Northeast Asian energy sector. First, it provides a country-level analysis of renewable energy trends in China, Korea, and Japan. Then, it analyzes how domestic trends are linked from a regional perspective, highlighting opportunities and challenges posed by renewable energy technologies. Finally, it assesses the current state of affairs in energy cooperation and provides an appraisal of future developments, with particular attention to the issue of grid connectivity.

Iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) is defined as extrinsic compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) between the overlying right common iliac artery and the lumbar vertebra. The most severe complication is phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD), a medical emergency that requires quick intervention to prevent irreversible limb ischemia. This article reports the case of a patient with PCD as the first manifestation of IVCS. The treatment included embolectomy and fasciotomy. Bilateral femoral iliac axis phlebography and cavography were performed 48 hours after the procedure. The IVCS was identified, and balloon predilatation of the lesions followed by implantation of self-expanding stents from the confluence of the LCIV with the inferior vena cava to the middle portion of the left external iliac vein was performed. Postprocedure phlebography demonstrated satisfactory final results, and a 12-month follow-up image showed patent stents and minimal intimal hyperplasia.

In the wound dressing research field, there is a continuous search for high-quality materials which present properties superior to those already used. Bacterial cellulose films are recognized as being effective, but their performance can still be further enhanced. On the other hand, wound dressings which present surfaces modified with hydrophobic molecules, such as dialkyl carbamoyl chloride, appear to be an alternative material, acting as antimicrobial dressings. Based on that, this paper describes the synthesis of small hydrophobic molecules based on inexpensive alcohols, such as octyl and benzyl alcohol, conjugated to the hydroxyl groups of bacterial cellulose. The films were prepared using ultrasound irradiation and characterized via infrared, as well as for their wettability and water absorption capacity, which showed greater contact angles and similar moisture retention when compared to unmodified films. Morphological aspects of modified films were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and minimal modification in the structure was found. The hydrophobized cellulose films showed cytocompatibility with fibroblasts, and antimicrobial activity when compared to native bacterial cellulose films, by reducing the bacterial load up to 75%. This type of modification on these films is of interest in order to prepare films with better properties as dressings based on bacterial cellulose.

Objective To find the safety of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) compared to each other, and/or placebo in the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) and/or schizoaffective disorder (SZA).Methods We performed a systematic review and a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the safety of LAIs versus other LAIs or placebo in adults diagnosed with SCZ or SZA. The primary outcomes were treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs), serious treatment emergent adverse events (STEAEs), and deaths. The secondary outcomes included treatment discontinuations due to adverse events and all-cause discontinuations. Results Seventeen RCTs were included (n=7,908). There were no significant differences between LAIs and placebo in the risk of presenting TEAEs. LAIs had a significant lower risk of presenting STEAEs except for aripiprazole. No significant differences in deaths were found. LAIs showed a significant protective effect against all-cause discontinuation, except for haloperidol. Only aripiprazole had a significantly lower risk of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events. Conclusion We found no significant differences in the risk of presenting TEAEs between LAIs and placebo. The majority of LAIs had a significantly lower risk of presenting STEAEs than placebo. Development of international guidelines for the report of safety outcomes related to antipsychotics especially for LAIs in clinical trials could minimize report and interpretation biases and improve the accuracy of posterior meta-analysis.
