현대 그래픽디자인은 포스트모더니즘이라는 거대한 소용돌이치는 파도 속에서 모더니즘 이후에 이루어진 단순한 미학을 뛰어넘어 급진적으로 탈바꿈 되고 발전해 왔다. 그리고 타이포그래피는 모더니즘의 산물인 그리드의 규범에서 국제 타이포그래피 양식으로 발전하면서 현재로 오게 되었다. 이러한 양식의 대표적 인물 중 한 사람인 에드워드 펠라Edward Fella를 꼽을 수 있으며, 펠라는 현재 캘리포니아 예술학교Cal Arts에서 열정적으로 그래픽디자인과 타이포그래피 강의를 진행하고 있다. 펠라는 오랜 시간을 해체주의적 표현의 결과물 창출과 미학이 바탕이 된 디자인 아이덴티티 정립 연구에 매진했다. 이에 프랑스 근대 철학과 미학을 바탕으로 전 세계의 그래픽디자인계와 타이포그래피 교육의 획을 긋고 있는 펠라의 그래피즘을 살펴보며 현대그래픽디자인에 끼친 미적 범주를 연구 하였다. 펠라의 작업은 무의식과 잠재의식 속에 존재하는 그래픽 모티브를 활용하여 여과 없이 걸러진 작업들을 펼치게 된다. 이에 따른 그의 그래픽 형식을 해체주의적 미학으로 여기며 연구하게 된다. 현시대가 포스트모더니즘의 끝자락에서 표류하며 불확실한 시대로 흘러 하는 탈형식의 시대로 규정하지만 이러한 시대에 그의 타이포그래피를 통하여 현재와 미래의 세계 그래픽디자인의 흐름을 고찰하며 표현양상을 포괄적으로 파악하는 계기가 될 수 있음을 시사하고 있다고 하겠다. Experiencing the vortex of postmodernism, modern graphic design has evolved radically from simple aesthetically-motivated style following modernism. Concurrently, Typography has transmuted into International Typography Style from Grid Standard, which was an outcome of modernism. Edward Fella is one of the most internationally prestigious figures practicing the contemporary graphic design style. He is currently pursuing his career as an educator by teaching graphic design and typography at Cal Arts. For a long time, Fella has devoted himself to yielding products of de-constructive presentations and constructing design identity based on aesthetics. This paper looks into aesthetic criteria which has affected modern graphic design, referring to graphism of Fella, an international graphic design and typography educator whose theoretical origins lie in French modern philosophy and aesthetics. Fella has created graphic works by making use of graphic motives residing in the unconscious and the subconscious. Therefore, his graphic style is viewed and investigated as de-constructive aesthetics in the paper. Drifting around toward the end of postmodernism, the present day defines itself as the age free of formality approaching uncertain future; however, Fella's typography graphically guides us to understand comprehensively not only how international graphic design flows from the present to the future, but its realizations in design works.

연상 이미지 형성을 위한 캘리그라피 표현도구 활용에 관한 연구

캘리그라피는 제품이나 광고, 영상, 패션, 포스터 등 넓고 다양한 분야에서 활용되고 있다. 이와 같은 캘리그라피는 과거에서부터 전통적으로 활용되었던 붓이나 펜과 같은 도구뿐만 아니라 다양한 방법으로 제작되어지고 있다. 캘리그라피는 정확한 정보와 함께 정서를 전달하기 위해 다양한 도구를 활용하고 있으며 그 도구에 따라서 수용자는 다른 이미지를 느낄 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 캘리그라피를 나타내기 위해 활용되는 도구에 따라서 수용자가 어떠한 이미지를 연상시키는지 살펴보았으며 그 결과를 통해 각각의 표현도구들은 도구의 형태와 그 도구에 대한 사회의 문화와 기술, 경험, 지식 등을 바탕으로 수용자에게 어떠한 연상 이미지를 떠오르게 할 수 있다는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 표현도구의 가격이나 입수용이성 등의 요소도 연상이미지에 많은 영향을 끼치는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 표현도구들은 캘리그라피의 표현에 활용될 수 있으며 제작자의 가공에 의해 더욱 다양한 연상 이미지를 가지게 할 수 있게 된다. 따라서 캘리그라피를 제작하기에 앞서 표현도구에 대한 적절한 선택의 기준이 필요하며 이를 통해 더욱 명확한 캘리그라피를 제작할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. Calligraphy is using in a wide fields, such as product, advertisement, video, fashion, poster design and so on. The calligraphy is being written in various ways by the many tools such as traditional brush, pen, pencil and other tools. Calligraphed letters, words and sentences are made by many representation tools because it can convey the various emotions. So audiences can feel various and much emotions. Therefore, This study is how to convey producer’s idea and concept through representation tools. And then we found that each tools based on the society culture, technology, experience and knowledge convey various feelings to audiences. Prices and purchasability of the tools are also effective on the feelings about the tools. The calligraphed letters, words and sentences that modified by producer can express a lot of feelings. Therefore, before we write calligraphy, the appropriate selection criteria for the tool is needed. And It helps to express various and much feelings.

5+1(Five Plus One)은 오감 즉 시각, 청각, 후각, 미각, 촉각과 영감을 주제로 한 시각적 표현의 결과물이다. 오감에 관한 자료를 찾아보았으나 과학적 근거와 다국적 언어들의 인용으로 된 자료들만 무성하였으며 시각적 유희와 감성의 표현으로 이루어진 예술적 표현과는 거리가 먼 서적들이 대부분이었다. 대부분 어린이 지능발달을 위한 교재가 대부분이었으며 학술적 논문과 의학서적들이 주를 이루고 있다. 이에 한글과 영문을 혼용하여 가독성의 문제가 있어 이해되지 않은 상황에서도 오감과 영감에 관한 커뮤니케이션이 가능한 감성북을 제작하였다. 연구 결과물은 오감과 영감을 시각화 시키는 작업에 중점을 두었다. 그리고 의미와 각 감각의 이해도를 높이기 위한 기초과학 상식에 입각한 정보디자인의 제작, 각 감각의 시각적 증빙을 위한 실험 등을 구사하였다. 그리고 각 감각을 구체화시키기 위해 사물과 의미 표현을 위한 촬영, 메타포의 활용, 일러스트레이션 타이포그라피에 특히 역점을 두었다. 이러한 실험과 표현 방법을 통하여 제작과정과 그리고 이러한 작업의 결과가 하나의 책으로 완성되어가는 결과물을 연구물로 제시하였다. ‘Five Plus One’is a result of visual expressions on five senses such as the sense of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Although I searched for the data on five senses, there were only information which was quoted in various languages and scientific bases, and also most of the books written were far from artistic expressions including visual pleasure and emotional expressions. In addition, most materials were mainly textbooks for children’s intellectual development, academic papers, and medical publications. Therefore, I made this book that makes us to communicate about five senses and an inspiration even though we have a problem to read writings in both Korean and English. I arranged visual elements using illustrations and typography in various ways based on the scientific evidence.
