Playing golf has been recently increased as the number of golf players is near 3 million and the number of people who play golf in golf courses was over 1.7 million in the late of 2005 year. It is within bounds to say that golf is one of popular sports in Korea as compared with other sports such as football, basketball and baseball etc. Especially, concerns about standards of living help popularization of golf. Moreover, Good records of Korean golfers in USA and Japan contribute to raise interests in golf. A recent survey via mass media supported such concerns on golf. According to its result, office workers and university students selected ``GOLF`` as the best sport they want to play. Recently, media and sports newspapers give a lot of space to golf such as one point lesson or golf column. The number of magazine dealing with golf has been increased also. Even cultural newsmagazines give much space to golf news and golf columns. However, most of them just lay stress on golf information, golf game, swing advice or golf story. That is to say, they deal how to play golf well rather than academic studies about golf, golf history, golf club or golf club fitting. So many golfers think that expensive club has good qualities because they don`t`` have a chance to have professional understanding about golf club and common sense in golf. In this study, characteristics of golf clubs in each period are dealt. Through historical studies, golf clubs in the past and the present are understood and that can help to expect changes in the future. As a result of history of golf clubs in historical, technical and social aspects, such results help to show historical materials for golf club study and golf club development in the future. For periodical study, golf club history is classified into (1) beginning era, (2) long-nose woods (from beginning to the 1890s), (3) transitional woods (1880-1920), (4) socket head woods (1890-1930), (5) cleek-marked woods (1880-1920), (6) mass-produced irons (1920-1930), and (7)patent woods-irons (1890-1930). The 1970s when Taylor-made golf club company developed metal woods are focused on understanding modern golf club industry.
