Income inequalities in traffic crash victims: a closer look at disability and labor market dynamics
정남지 한국교통연구원 2014 交通硏究 Vol.21 No.2
This study investigates the long term socio-economic impacts of traffic crashes at the individual level. In particular, this paper places its central interest in shaping a dynamic model that explains the structural sources of earnings loss of traffic crash victims. Existing literature argues that physical disability from a traffic crash leads to earnings losses in the long run. This paper proposes to move this argument further and assumes that disability itself is not entirely responsible for earnings loss. More important are labor market outcomes associated with disability including work hours reduction and job loss. Thus one expects to find the causal relationship between the labor market outcome after a traffic crash and earnings loss. By using the original data on traffic victims’ post-crash socio-economic status changes collected from a survey questionnaire conducted in South Korea, this paper shows that while disability is positively related to a decrease of personal income after a traffic crash, it is not entirely responsible for the income reduction. When labor market related variables such as job loss and working hours decrease are added to the model, the effect of the disability disappears and labor market related variables appear to be statistically significant. This suggests that disability is a mediating factor for earnings loss but not the key causality. As such, traffic crashes are, by all means, a matter of public health and safety, but at a certain point, the problem takes a qualitative turn to issues of economic development, income inequality and welfare. Understanding the above-mentioned mechanism provides insights to identify what kind of policy intervention can help reduce potential income inequality generated by traffic crashes. While disability might poses a critical limitation to individuals, if they can still continue their employment, the income decrease will be much less severe. This suggests that through intervention in the labor market, the government can help reduce the income inequality that is artificially induced by traffic crashes.

The primary goal of this study is to elaborate and test of how commitment-based HR practices affect the innovative capacity of firms. While a remarkable wealth of knowledge has been accumulated on what accounts for small firm innovation including various internal and external factors, a void still remains in our understanding on how a firm’s human resource management efforts make a difference. This study attempts to fill this hole in the literature by empirically testing which human resource practices are positively related to the innovative capacity of entrepreneurial high technology firms. In particular, this research is interested in the effects of job security on the innovative capacity because retaining knowledgeable and skilled workers is critical, for an entrepreneurial firm’s success. In doing so, this study builds its theoretical framework on commitment-based human resource management. Using data from a survey of small-sized software development firms in Seoul conducted by Korea Internal Promotion Agency in 2004, this study performs a logistic regression to determine predictors of innovation in small software firms. The results show that the existence of high skilled workers (high human capital); and job security for managers (measured by the percentage of full time managers) and non-software technicians are highly correlated with innovation. Job security for software technicians is not significant. These results reflect the reality that under highly competitive markets and rapidly changing technological environments, the existence of committed managers who can identify new marketable products and the right time to launch them on the market might be more critical than technological prowess itself. However, other HR incentives such as high compensation (measured by annuated average wage), off-site training and prime office location, which are typically positively related to a large firm performance, are not significantly related to innovation. This study contributes to the small firm innovation related literature by confirming that job security is positively related to the innovative capacity of a firm. This study also demonstrates how a contextualized approach helps understanding the specific conditions that govern the effects of HR practices.

Erosive adenomatosis of the nipple is a rare, benign neoplasm, currently thought to originate from the terminal lactiferous ducts and subareolar breast tissue. Clinically, erosive adenomatosis of the nipple is often indistinguishable from that of mammary Paget`s disease, and it could be misdiagnosed as intraductal carcinoma as it has a similar histological finding. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman who had a unilateral erythematous induration of the nipple that contained a palpable, firm nodule. It had first been noticed 2 years earlier. The surface was occasionally crusted, and there was a bloody discharge. Histopathological examination showed irregular, dilated tubular structures, which were lined by a peripheral layer of cuboidal cells and a luminal layer of the columnar cells that demonstrated decapitation secretion at their luminal border.
