This paper presents an efficient method of analyzing linear time-varying systems via Taylor polynomials. While the approach suggested by Sparis and Mouroutsos gives an implicit form for unknown state vector and requires to solve a linear algebraic equation with large dimension when the number of terms increases, the method proposed in this paper shows an explicit form and has no need to solve any linear algebraic equation.

When people communicate, they can convey what they mean without using direct and explicit expressions. However, indirect use of the language might cause a pragmatic failure to the speakers from different cultural background. It might be incompatible with the economic use of language when we consider the usual mechanism of understanding and speaking. Compared with the direct use of language expression, indirect expression requires more efforts not only on the side of speakers but also on the side of listeners while they analyze the message. Also, it causes much higher tension on the part of the speakers since the message could be delivered differently depending on the listeners` cultural background. The L2 learners of Korean often find the indirect expressions are difficult to understand. For instance, when a supposition expression that Koreans use frequently are used in a different meaning rather than the supposition itself, then L2 learners feel it confusing. This study examined whether Thai speakers of Korean showed different degree of understanding on the indirect supposition expression and direct expression, and whether there existed the variation of language proficiency and learning effect.(Ewha Womans University)

This study examines the awareness and perceptions of intermediate to advanced level. Thai learners of Korean compared to native Korean speakers, with regard to the differences between male and female utterances and utterable genderlects. The research questions are as follows: (1) Do Thai learners, compared to Korean native speakers, make different judgments regarding Korean utterable genderlects and perceiving the attitude? (2) Is Thai learners’ understanding of the obviousness of gender preferences in utterances different to that of Korean speakers? In this study, samples of utterable genderlects were extracted from the categories of phonemes, vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics. The data were analyzed using a frequency analysis and chi-squared test. The analysis showed that the highest deviation between Thai learners and native Korean speakers was in the category of pragmatics, implying that pragmatics is the most challenging aspect of acquiring utterable genderlects. Moreover, Thai learners were, in general, well-aware of utterable genderlects with more obvious gender preferences, especially female utterances. Therefore, it can be said thatThai learners are not uniformly different from native Korean speakers in understanding utterable genderlects. Results from such studies should be reflected in the field of Korean language education.

The studies on Korean modality expressions have drawn much attention recently. However, the most of them have taken synchronic research methods which led the error analysis or contrastive analysis perspectives. The current study begun with the question how the L2 learners of Korean express the modal meaning not knowing the grammatical modal expressions. This study analyzed how 27 vietnamese learners of Korean acquire their modal expression. Our primary observation has been made on how these learners coped with their lack of grammatical knowledge and how this problem had been solved as they developed their interlanguage. The learners participated in 3 experiments over a 3-month time interval which were conducted for 6 months. I used the both of qualitative and quantitative methods according to the research questions. The proficiency test, survey, and interview were used to elicitate the data.

The Sejonghakdang has constructed itself as a merging and cultivating institute for Korean language education in and out of Korea. However, the continual needs have arisen from the lack of adequate and suitable textbooks for the institute. The National Institute of the Korean Language launched the textbook development project to meet these needs in 2011. This paper aimed to report how this project had developed the units of the textbook, ``Korean Language Textbook for Sejonghakdang: Beginner level``(tentative title). It has been based on the analysis of the current curriculum and teaching-learning situation of the Sejonghakdang. Since the regular beginner level courses at the Sejonghakdang are operated on 4 hour session per week for 2 semesters(30 weeks), 29 units in total have been developed. The primary components of the unit are composed of 5 parts such as 2 Dialogues, Listening & Speaking, Reading & Writing, and Culture, each of which has theoretical basis on ``International Standard Curriculum for Korean language education``. The two Dialogues have sub components such as Vocabulary, Grammar, Activity 1 and Activity 2, which correspond to the Language Knowledge component of the Standard Curriculum. The integrated Listening & Speaking and Reading & Writing components also correspond to the Language Use component of the Standard Curriculum. The 8 Culture items were included as suggested in the Standard Curriculum.
