The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of manganese (Mn) supplementation on bone status and calcium balance in ovariectomized rats according to the calcium intake levels. Total of 50 Sprague Dawley female rats (6 weeks) were divided into 5 groups and bred for 12 weeks: sham operated control group (SACa), OVX Ca deficiency group (OLCa) with Ca deficiency diet (0.1% Ca modified AIN-93N diet), OVX Ca deficiency & Mn supplement group (OLCaMn), OVX adequate Ca group (OACa; 0.5% Ca AIN-93N diet) and OVX adequate Ca & Mn supplement group (OACaMn). BMD (bone mineral density) of the femur was increased by Mn supplementation in OVX adequate Ca group. However, BMDs of spine, femur and tibia were lowered in OLCa compared to the OLCaMn group. Bone strength of tibia in OLCaMn group was significantly lower than OLCa group. Serum ALP (alkaline phos-phatase) and CTx (C-telopeptide of collagen cross-links) levels were significantly higher in ovariectomized rats than those in the sham group, but they were not changed by Mn supplementation. Ca retention rate and Ca absorption rate did not differ among the experimental groups. Urinary Ca excretion was increased by Mn supplementation in Ca deficiency rats. In summary, Mn supplementation resulted in positive effects on bone mineral density ovariectomized rats with which intake adequate Ca. However, Mn supplementation on Ca deficiency ovariectomized rats resulted in decrement of BMD and bone strength by increasing Ca excretion. Therefore, it is encouraged to consider calcium in-take levels in supplementation of manganese in order to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and to keep bone healthy. Many different factors which may affect the prognosis of the soft tissue sarcomas have been reported by many authors ; Generally, tumor size, histologic type, surgical margin, and multi modality therapy therapy as the prognostic factors were reported. The objectives of this retrospective study of soft tissue sarcomas are : 1) to define more clearly prognostic variables that have significant predictive value for disease-free and overall survival ; and 2) to evaluate tumor histologic grade based upon extent of tumor necrosis as a means of stratifying more aggressive soft tissue sarcomas(grade II & III) of the extremities. We treated 94 patients who had soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities and trunk from May 1984 to September 1994(average duration of follow-up was 5 years ranging from 2 months to 10 years) and evaluated the prognostic factors of the soft tissue sarcomas; age, sex, depth, size, location, histologic type and grade, stage, therapy modality, surgical margin, local recurrence and distant metastasis. The results were as follows. 1. The patients with poorer prognosis were over the age of fifty, whose mass was deeply located, size of the mass was over 10cm in diameter, grade III in histology, who had local recurrence, metastasis, and received only surgery. 2. Among these prognostic factors, the most significant prognostic factor was histologic grade base upon extent of tumor necrosis.

주사슬에 나프탈렌고리와 테트라메틸렌 및 헥사메틸렌 유연격자를 가지면서 트라이어드 메소겐을 갖는 새로운 열방성 방향족 액정 폴리에스테르(TLCP)를 용액중합법에 의하여 합성하였다. TLCP의 함량을 달리하는 TLCP/PEN in situ 복합재료를 용융방사하여 연신비가 각각 다른 단섬유를 제조하고 그들의 열적, 기계적 특성 및 모폴로지를 조사하였다. 합성된 TLCP는 네마틱 액정중합체였으며 고체상에서 액정상으로의 전이 온도는 249 ℃였다. 블렌드내의 TLCP 도메인들은 매트릭스 고분자인 PEN에 잘 분산 되었으며 어떠한 거대 상 분리 현상도 보여 주지 않았다. TLCP 함량의 증가에 따른 블렌드내 PEN의 cold crystallization 온도가 낮아진 것으로 보아서 TLCP가 PEN에 대한 조핵제 역할을 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 블렌드 섬유내의 TLCP의 도메인 크기는 대략 40 ~ 50 nm정도의 미세한 크기였으며 매트릭스와의 사이에 좋은 계면접착력을 보였다. 또한 cold 및 hot-drawing 과정을 거친 낮은 draw ratio(DR)에서는 거의 fibril이 형성되지 않았지만, 높은 DR에서는 잘 발달된 fibril들을 보여 주었다. TLCP의 강화효과로 인하여 10 wt% TLCP/ PEN 블렌드 섬유의 초기 모듈러스는 270 %, 인장강도는 235 %의 증가를 보여주었다. 반면에 신장률은 DR의 증가와 함께 감소 하였다. A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) which has flexible butylene/hexylene spacers in the main chain and a triad aromatic ester type mesogenic unit containing a naphthyl group was prepared by solution polycondensation. The in-situ composites based on poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate)(PEN) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) were prepared and melt spun at different TLCP contents and different draw ratios to produce monofilaments. Blends of the TLCP with PEN were investigated in terms of thermal, mechanical properties and morphology. The TLCP synthesized showed nematic mesophasic behavior and its transition temperature to isotropic melt from mesophase was 249℃. The blends showed well dispersed TLCP phases in the PEN matrix without macroscopic phase separation. Inclusion of TLCP in theblends decreased the cold crystallization temperature of PEN in the blend, therefore, the TLCP acts as a nucleating agent in the blend and showed good interfacial adhesion between the dispersed LCP phases and PEN matrix with domain sizes 40~50 nm in diameter and well developed fibrillation in the monofilaments. The TLCP acted effectively as a reinforcing material in the PEN matrix at the 10wt% level, it led to an increase of initial modulus up to 270% and tensile strength by 235%, while the elongation rate increasing with higher draw ratios.

Effects of solution treatment(ST) and aging temperatures on the behavior of β decomposition and the mechanical properties of β-C alloy have been investigated mainly by means of TEM observations. In the initial stage of transformation at temperatures below 480℃, a modulated(or tweed) structure forms on a {110}_β and aligns <111>_β. And then a metastable β′ nucleates along the modulated structure. At the later stage of transformation, the equilibrium a phase nucleates at the β/β′interface and grows preferentially to <111>_β with Burgers relationship to β matrix. The β grain size and the fatigue limit are strongly dependent on ST temperature. The elongation, the yield and tensile strengths, however, are approximately constant independently of the ST temperature. Aging at 480℃ after ST at 800℃ gives the highest tensile strength but shows the lowest ductility in the present study. This result is considered to occurred by the large amounts of β′ and extremely fine needlelike α precipitates, which induce much elastic strains in the β matrix. Aging at 530℃ after ST at 800℃ gives improved tensile strength and ductility combination and represents the fatigue strength as high as 605㎫ with the high endurance ratio of 0.536. The mechanical properties of the specimens solution treated at 800℃ followed by aging treatment are better than those of the specimens solution treated at 900℃ followed by aging treatment. Therefore, it is indispensable for obtaining a better combination of strength, ductility and fatigue limit in the β-C alloy to select an adequate ST and aging temperatures.
