        Is Politeness Instruction Being Neglected? Student Perceptions toward the Use of Politeness in the Language Classroom

        Despite a call for increased instruction on sociopragmatic competence and the teaching of politeness strategies in the classroom, there is still a tendency for it to be neglected in instruction. Thus, this study aims to investigate Korean student perceptions toward politeness and politeness instruction in the English classroom through a questionnaire and subsequent interviews. This study found that many of the participants did not have a clear understanding of how to be polite, and were apt to believe that, compared to their native Korean language, politeness does not hold as much importance. Furthermore, students with a perceived lower proficiency in English were more likely to answer that they have never received instruction on how to be polite in English. This study calls for teachers and curriculum designers to place an increased importance on teaching politeness via explicit instruction.         2016년 국민건강영양조사 자료를 활용한 20-30대 성인의 대사증후군에 영향을 미치는 요인

        본 연구는 2016년도 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여 20-30대 성인의 대사증후군과 관련 있는 요인을 확인한 이차자료 분석 연구로 2016년도 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이차분석하였으며, 대상자는 만 19세 이상에서 만 39세인 1,887명 중에서 대사증후군 결측치가 있는 대상자를 제외한 1,447명의 자료를 최종 분석하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 23을 이용하여 층화, 군집 및 가중치를 적용한 복합표본분석방법으로 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과 20-30대 성인의 복부비만은 24.7%(382명), 고혈압 16.8%(211명), 고중성지방혈증 25.8%(335명), 저HDL(high-density lipoprotein) 콜레스테롤 24.7%(382명), 공복포도당장애 14.9%(232명)로 나타났으며, 대사증후군은 13.9%(191명)이었다. 대사증후군에 영향을 미치는 요인은 연령, 비만, 및 흡연으로 확인 되었으며, 30-39세 집단은 2.28배, 비만한 군은 15.8배 대사증후군이 증가하였다. 흡연은 비흡연자에 비해 현재 흡연자가 2.00배 대사증후군 위험이 증가하였다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 20-30대의 성인을 대상으로 한 대사증후군의 유병율을 감소시키기 위한 범사회적 캠페인 홍보와 정부-의료기관간 협력구축을 위한 제도적 장치가 필요할 것이다. This study was secondary analysis study using the national health and nutrition survey data to identify the factors affecting the metabolic syndrome in adults aged 20-30 years. As the result of this study, the 24.7 % abdominal obesity, 16.8% hypertension, 25.8% hypertriglyceridemia, 24.7% low HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterolemia, and 14.9% impaired fasting glucose and 13.9% were found to have the metabolic syndrome among the adults in their 20s and 30s. The factors affecting to the metabolic syndrome is confirmed as the age, obesity and smoking, metabolic syndrome in the 30-39 age group increased 2.28 times compared to the 20-29 age group, 15.80 times in the obese group compared to the non-obese group, and 2.00 times in the smoker group compared to the non-smoker group. Based on this study, cooperation between government and medical institution and social campaign are needed to reduce the prevalence of metabolic syndrome.

        3교대 간호사의 스트레스, 암 발생 위험성 지각 및 암 예방적 건강행위의 관계

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of stress, perception of occurrence risk of cancer and cancer preventive health behavior in three-shift nurses. Methods: The participants of this study were 252 three shifts nurses working at three medium and small sized hospitals with 100 to 300 beds. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire from September to October 2014. Results: The mean score for stress was 24.35±7.93. The mean score of perception for occurrence risk of cancer was 12.63±4.12 and cancer preventive health behavior was 58.07±8.87. Stress had a positive relationship with the perception of occurrence risk of cancer (r=.40, p<.001); the perception of occurrence risk of cancer had a positive relationship with the preventive health behavior against it (r=.31, p<.001); and stress had a positive relationship with preventive health behavior against it (r=.33, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings show that participants stress levels were high and degrees of perceptions of occurrence risk and cancer preventive health behaviors were low. Significant correlations were found among these variables. On the basis of these findings, development of intervention is required to reduce stress and enhance the perception of occurrence risk of cancer and cancer preventive health behavior among three shifts nurses.

        형상화와 온라인 상담세션을 활용한 비대면수업에서의 영어학습자 동기부여에 관한 연구

        본 연구에서는 비대면 온라인 교양 영어 수업에서 제2 언어 동기적 자아체계(L2 Motivational Self System)를 기반으로 형상화(imagery)와 온라인 상담세션(counselling sessions)을 활용한 동기부여프로그램의 실효성을 탐색하고자 하였다. 혼합연구방식(mixed method)으로 진행된 본 연구에서 전체 50명의연구 참여자는 형상화연습세션 7회 및 사전-사후조사 설문조사(survey)에 참여하였고, 이 중 20명은추가적으로 온라인상담세션 2회 및 포커스그룹 인터뷰(focus group interviews)에 참여하였다. 그 결과, 형상화와 온라인 상담세션을 활용한 동기부여프로그램은 학생들의 제2언어자아체계에 상당히 긍정적인 영향을 주었다고 할 수 있다. 사전-사후 설문 평균값의 비교 결과 이상적 자아, 형상화와 비젼화, 그리고 영어에 대한 태도 항목에서 가장 큰 변화가 나타났다. 이는 영어 학습과 이미지형상화 훈련 및 온라인상담세션을 병행함으로써 형상화 능력의 향상뿐만 아니라 영어 학습에 대한 학생들의 긍정적인 태도를 이끌어 낼 수 있었으며, 학생 스스로의 학습동기를 고취시키고 이상적 자아 이미지를 향상시키는 데도움이 되었다는 것을 보여준다. 또한, 질적 자료 분석에서는 온라인 상담세션을 통해 학생들의 영어학습에 대한 정서적인 어려움, 즉 학업에 대한 스트레스와 불안감을 해소함으로써 학습동기 지속에 도움을 줄 수 있었다는 점이 주목할 만하다 In this study, a motivational program using imagery and online counselling sessions was designed based on the theory of the L2 Motivational Self System. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the program by conducting a mixed-method approach, 50 participants took part in 7 imagery training sessions and a pre-post survey. Additionally, among these participants, 20 also engaged in 2 online counseling sessions and focus group interviews. The motivational program using imagery and online counseling sessions was seen to have a significant positive effect on students' L2 Motivational Self System. In particular, as a result of comparing the average values of the pre-post questionnaire, the biggest changes were shown in the categorizes of Ideal Self, Imagery and Visualization, and Attitudes toward Learning English. By utilizing imagery training and online counselling sessions along with English learning, not only were the students' capability of visualizing the image of themselves enhanced, but also positive attitudes towards English education were induced. This led to the fostering of students' motivation in learning English and to the improvement of their L2 Ideal Self Image. Of significant note are the findings in the qualitative data analysis, which show that emotional difficulties in students' English learning, such as academic stress and anxiety, can be alleviated through online counseling sessions, thereby helping them to sustain their learning motivation, Implications of the study are presented and discussed.

        도시.농촌 지역 초등학생의 가족환경, 건강행위 및 건강상태에 관한 비교

        This research intends to survey family environment, health behavior and health status of the students in urban-rural elementary schools and analyze those factors comparatively, and use the result as basic material for school health teacher to teach health education in connection with family and regional areas. It also intends to improve a pupil's self-abilitiy in health care. The subjects involve 2,774 students of urban elementary schools and 583 student in rural ones, who were selected by means of a multi -stage probability sampling. Using the questionnaire and school documents, we collected data on family environment, health behavior and health status for 19 days. Feb. 2nd 1998 through Feb. 20th 1998. The R -form of Family Environment Scale (Moos, 1974) was used in the analysis of family environment(Cronbach's Alpha =0.80). Questionnaires of Health Behavior in School-aged children used by the WHO in Europe(Aaro et al., 1986) and the ones developed by the Health Promotion Committee of the Western Pacific(WHO, 1995)(adapted by long Young-suk and Moon Young-hee(1996)) were used in the analysis of health behavior, as well documents on absences due to sickness, school health room-visits, levels of physical strength, height, weight and degree of obesity were used to determine health status. In next step, We used them with an $X^2$-test, t-test, Odds Ratio, and a 95% Confidence Interval. 1. In two dimensions of three, family-relationship (t=3.41, p=0.001) and system -maintenances(t= 2.41, p=0.0l6) the mean score of urban children were significantly higher than those of rural ones. In the personal development dimension however, there was little significant difference. Assorting family environment into 10 sub-fields and analyzing them, we recognized that urban children were superior to rural children in the sub-fields of expressiveness (t =3.47, p=0.001), conflict (t=0.48, p=0.001), active-recreational orientation (t = 1.97, p=0.049) and organization (t=4.33, p=0.000). 2. Referring to the Odds Ratios of urban-rural children's health behaviors, urban children set up more desirable behavior than rural children wear ing safety belts (Odds Ratio =0.32, p=0.000), washing hands after meals(Odds Ratio = 0.43, p= 0.000), washing hands after excreting (Odds Ratio = 0.39, p=O.OOO), washing hands after coming - home ( Odds Ratio = 0.75, p = 0.003), brushing teeth before sleeping(Odds Ratio =0.45, p=0.000), brushing teeth more than once a day (Odds Ratio =0.73, p=0.0l2), drinking boiled water (Odds Ratio = 0.49, p=0.000), collecting garbage at home(Odds Ratio=0.31, p=0.000) and in the school(Odds Ratio =0. 67, p=0.000). All these led to significant differences. As to taking milk(Odds Ratio = 1.50, p=0.000), taking care of eyesight(Odds Ratio=1.41, p=0.001) and getting physical exercise in(Odds Ratio = 1.33, p=0.0l9) and outside the school(Odds Ratio = 1.32, p=0.005), rural children had more desirable behavior which also revealed a significant difference. There was little significant difference in smoking, but the smoking rate of rural children(5.5%) was larger than that of urban children(3.9%). 3. Health status was analyzed in terms of absences, school health room-visits, levels of physical strength, and the degree of obesity, height and weight. Considering Odds Ratios of the health status of urban-rural children, the health status of rural children was significantly better than that of the urban ones in the level of physical strength(t=1.51, p=0.000) and the degree of obesity(t=1.84, p=0.000). The mean height of urban children ($150.4{\pm}7.5cm$) is taller than that of their counterparts($149.5{\pm}7.9$), which revealed a significant difference (t =2.47, p=0.0l4). The mean weight of urban children($42.9{\pm}8.6kg$) is larger than that of their counterparts($41.8{\pm}9.0kg$), which was also a significant difference(t=2.81, p=0.005).         대사증후군 주의군 대학생을 위한 참여형 개선기법(PAOT)을 적용한 대사증후군 예방프로그램의 개발 및 효과

        본 연구는 대사증후군 주의군 대학생을 위한 참여형 개선기법을 적용한 대사증후군 예방 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하여 그 효과를 검증하기 위해 실시되었다. 본 연구는 비동등성 대조군사전사후설계를 이용하여 2021년 9월 6일부터 10월 29일까지 총 8주간 실시하였고, 면대면 중재를 마친 직후 첫 번째 사후조사를, 중재 종료 8주 후 두 번째 사후조사를 실시하였다. 최종 연구대상은 실험군 25명, 대조군 25명으로 총 50명이었다. 실험군에게는 참여형 개선기법을 적용한대사증후군 예방프로그램을 제공하였고, 면대면 중재 5주 60분, 모바일 중재 3주 20분으로 구성하여 실시하였다. 자료 분석은 SPSS/WIN 21.0 통계 프로그램을 이용하여 분석하였으며 연구 결과 대사증후군 주의군 대학생의 생활습관은 유의한 차이가 있었으며(F=266.84, <.001), 자기효능감 또한 유의한 차이가 있었다(F=15.64, <.001). 대사증후군 생리적 지표인 중성지방(TG)(z=-3.70, < .001), 허리둘레(z=-1.73, =.084), 수축기혈압(z=-0.65, =.514), 이완기혈압(z=-0.90, =.368), 공복 혈당(z=-1.31, =.192), 고밀도 콜레스테롤(z=-0.08, =.938)은 유의한 차이가 없었다. 따라서 대사증후군 주의군 대학생의 자기효능감을 증진하고 생활습관을 개선하여 대사증후군을 예방을 위해 참여형 개선기법을 적용한 대사증후군 예방 프로그램 활용을 제언한다.

        Motivating English Learners Using Video Project Assignments

        The L2 Motivational Self System (Dörnyei 2005, 2009) has been implemented and experimented with in English language learning as a core of learner motivation. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of video project assignments incorporating the component of imagery on student motivation in English language learning. Using questionnaire surveys adapted from You and Dörnyei (2016) and You, Dörnyei, and Csizér (2016), and subsequent interviews, data from 40 students majoring in acting and musical was collected. The result of data analysis shows that participating in the video project assignments had a positive impact on the students’ motivation in learning English in terms of travel orientation, cultural interest, ideal self, ought to self, instrumentality-promotion and prevention, attitudes toward learning English, and imagery and visualization. In particular, for the students in the study who can closely relate the project assignment to their future career, the project was considered as an effective strategy to enhance the students’ future selves.

        The impact of a new challenge on teachers¡¯ professional development

        This study investigates how a new challenge impacts on teachers¡¯ professional development. Using a qualitative research methodology, this study explores the experiences of four Korean elementary school teachers who were required to teach maths and science using English as the medium of instruction. In particular, for this paper, I focus on how the experiences of getting involved in the curricular innovation affect the teachers¡¯ professional life phases. As the teachers¡¯ participation in the innovation inevitably involves the teachers¡¯ learning of English language and subject knowledge in English, the teachers¡¯ English proficiency and previous experiences of teaching English play an important role in their positioning in the professional life cycle. Depending on their English proficiency, the four teachers were roughly categorized into two groups: proficient English users and non-proficient English users and the two teachers in each group showed the similar tendency in their professional development.

        Research Trend Analysis of Online English Learning and Teaching Using Topic Modeling

        This study aims to investigate and compare the research trend of online English education between Korea and the world for before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, and try to predict possible future trends of the research using the method of topic modeling and text network analysis. Research papers published between 2018 and 2022 from KCI and Springer were collected and analyzed. The findings from the comparison between the result of Springer and that of KCI show the biggest difference in research trends in Korea and around the world. That is, the world research trend shows a more general focus on the technological aspects while Korean research trend reports the dispersed nature of more specific aspects of classroom teaching, which might be due to the stable Internet infrastructure and well-equipped facilities in the classrooms. Thus, English teachers in Korea seem to focus on the finer aspects of English teaching and learning to promote instructional effectiveness. Based on the findings, educational implications will be discussed.
