To investigate the alleviative effects of Cnidium officinale water extract (COWE) on inflammation and skin barrier damage, both the irradiation of UVB and the application of squalene monohydroperoxide (Sq-OOH) to the backs of hairless mice were performed for 4 weeks. And at the same time experimental materials were applied topically. The skin erythema indices for the positive control (PC, 0.01% retinoic acid) and experimental (E, COWE) groups were lower than that of the control (C) group. Whereas both the lipid and water capacities for the PC and E groups were higher than those of the C group. Epidermis and dermis of the C group were remarkably thickened in comparison with the PC and E groups. Relatively much less number of inflammatory cells, including lymphocytes and neutrophils were found in dermis of the PC and E groups compared with the C group. Lipid lamellae of the C group were broken severely, showing an irregular arrangement and lipid content was much reduced. Whereas those of the PC and E groups were almost intact with a regular arrangement, that were similar to that of the N group. Taken the results all together, it was confirmed that COWE could be effective natural herbal material for the alleviation of inflammation and skin barrier damage in hairless mice skin that were induced by UVB irradiation and Sq-OOH application.

E. japonica is a well-known medicinal plant in Japan. The leaves of E. japonica were reported to have a hypoglycemic action. However, seeds of E. japonica are discarded and not used. To elucidate for anti-diabetic effects of E. japonica, Type 2 diabetic mice were allocated to control group, E. japonica leaf, and seed extract group. Animals were fed a 2018S Teklad global 18% protein rodent diet. Animals were received daily oral injections of E. japonica leaf or seed extract at a dose of 200 ㎎/㎏ body weight for 6 weeks. Body weight, food intake and water intake, and total adipose tissue weight of animals were significantly reduced by feeding of E. japonica leaf extract. All E. japonica extract groups significantly decreased fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin levels, size of adipocytes and serum adiponectins. However, they did not have a beneficial effect on the serum triglyceride and cholesterol in the diabetic animals. These results suggest that E. japonica seed and leaf extracts have a antidiabetic effect by controlling of blood glucose and decrease of size of adipocytes in db/db mice and seed extract is more effective in hypoglycemic action than leaf extract.

The aim of this study was to assess the antioxidant activity and whitening efficacy of ethanolic extract of herb complex (Oenothera laciniata, Phellinus linteus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH-radical inhibition activity, xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD)- like activity, and ABTS radical inhibition activity. Whitening efficacy was evaluated by mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activity. In the antioxidant activities of ethanolic extract of herb complex at 1,000 μg/mL concentration, DPPH radical inhibition activity was over 80% and similar to that of BHA, positive control. XO inhibition activity was over 90%. The SOD-like activity was over 30%. ABTS radical inhibition activity was over 95%. The ethanolic extract of herb complex reduced the mushroom tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependant manner, showing a inhibitory rate over 60% at 1,000 μg/mL concentration compared to the untreated control. The ethanolic extract of herb complex did not affect on cell growth at test concentrations (0~1,000 μg/mL). From these results, it was found that the ethanolic extract of herb complex had a good antioxidant activity and whitening efficacy. Hence, it could be used as cosmetic ingredients for skin whitening and/or skin anti-ageing.

The effects of $Gd_2O_3$ addition and sintering condition on optical and electrical properties of MgO films as a protective layer for AC plasma display panels were investigated. Doped MgO films prepared by the e-beam evaporation have a higher ${\Upsilon}$ (secondary electron emission coefficient) than pure MgO protective layer. Relative density and grain size increased with amount of $Gd_2O_3$ up to 100 ppm and then decreased further addition. These results showed that discharge properties and optical properties of MgO protective layers seemed to be closely related with microstructure factors such as relative density and grain size. Good optical and electrical properties of ${\Upsilon}$ of 0.138, surface roughness of 5.77 nm and optical transmittance of 95.76 % were obtained for the MgO+100 ppm $Gd_2O_3$ protective layer sintered at $1700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs.

The sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) variety ‘Sodamchal’ was developed and registered by Department of Sothern Area Crop Science, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2013. This variety was developed from the cross between ‘Hwanggeumchal’ with brown grain and ’Jungmo4001’ with semi-dwarf trait. ‘Sodamchal’ is the first semi-dwarf stature with waxy endosperm ever developed in Korea. The yield performance of ‘Sodamchal’ was 2.95 MT/ha in local adaptability test for 2 years. It had 91 cm culm length, which was 58 cm shorter than that of ‘Hwanggeumchal’, 26.3 cm panicle length, 22.0 mm thickness of culm, 21.1 g in 1,000 grain weight. It could be reduce the lodging problem and also adapted to mechanized cultivation. ‘Sodamchal’ produces high quantities of polyphenol and radical scavenging activitiy with diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) in pigmented testa. Above all ‘Sodamchal’ is suitable for use as a parental source for the development of improved pollinator parent lines for developing semi-dwarf sorghum with waxy endosperm and antioxidant activity. The authors have tried to make a potato commeal Tween 80 medium containing caffeic acid(PDCC) more convenient for routine mycological laboratory study than Sabouraud dextrose agar. Five species were culture on PDCC at 25 0C and 37 oC. Gross and microscopic fmdings of their colonies were examined. The colonial morphology and microscopic appearance were compared with those of the same strains on caffeic acid agar(CAA). Cηptococcus neoformans Which is a medically important and whose colony showed brown to purple brown on PDCC medium was distinguishable not only from buff colored C. laurentii after one week incubation but also from Candida spp. Candida albicans also formed chlamydospores and pseudohyphae on PDCC. Trichophyton mentagrophytes showed yellow- brown pigmentation which were rapid and darker in the center with gradual fading to the periphery. π1e macroconidia grape-like clusters of microconidia and spiral hyphae were better on PDCC. π1e gross morphology of Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum were similar on PDCC, CAA but macroconidia were seen more typically on PDCC.

Objective : We have currently changed treatment strategies to methotrexate(MTX)-based preirradiation chemotherapy with subsequent planned radiation for the initial therapy of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of treating PCNSL with chemotherapy plus radiotherapy (CRT) or radiotherapy(RT) alone. Method and Material : This study involved 10 females and 3 males patients with a mean age of 54.2 years. All patients underwent surgery, open(8 cases) or stereotactic biopsy(5 cases) for histological diagnosis. Eleven tumors were diffuse large B-cell lymphomas. Tumor volume change in the follow-up images and survival time were evaluated in patients treated with CRT and RT alone. In the beginning, two patients received ProMACE-Cytabom chemotherapeutic regimen, but did not complete the course and died of progressive tumor 8 and 9 months after diagnosis, respectively. One patient died at 6 months before chemotherapy. These three were excluded from the survival analysis. Five patients(RT group) completed full courses of cranial irradiation with or without boost. For the current combined modality treatment, high-dose MTXbased chemotherapy(systemic and intrathecal MTX, IV vincristine, and oral procarbazine) followed by whole brain irrdiation to 45Gy to tumor was introduced in 5 patients of CRT group. Result : A complete response was achieved in three of five who received RT only and in all of five who received CRT. All patients in CRT groups are in disease free status at a mean 23 months following therapy. The RT group patients refused any additional salvage therapy at tumor relapse and survived at mean 20 months from diagnosis. The Karnofsky performance status improved in eight of ten patients with treatment. The treatment toxicity included leukoencephalopathy in RT group and severe leukopenia, transient hepatitis, avascular necrosis of femoral head, hearing loss, and amenorrhea in CRT group, respectively. Conclusion : The combined modality therapy of MTX-based chemotherapy plus radiotherapy for PCNSL may enhance tumor response and improve patient survival. The patients who received CRT should be carefully followed up because of the higher risk of treatment-induced late neurotoxicity.
구절초의 추출조건에 따른 Linarin 함량과 In Vitro 생리활성 변화

본 연구에서는 구절초를 대상으로 물과 에탄올을 이용하여 확보한 각각의 추출물에 대하여 추출 수율, 폴리페놀 함량, 플라보노이드 함량, linarin 함량, ABTS 라디칼 소거능과 DPPH 라디칼 소거능, α-glucosidase 저해 활성, lipase 저해 활성을 측정하였다. 구절초는 70°C, 50% 주정 추출조건에서 추출 수율과 총플라보노이드 함량, linarin 함량, ABTS 라디칼 소거능과 DPPH 라디칼 소거능, α-glucosidase 저해 활성, lipase 저해 활성이 가장 높았다. 또한, linarin 함량이 구절초 추출물의 생리활성과 상관관계가 있음을 확인하였다. 구절초 추출물은 linarin 함량이 증가함에 따라 항산화, 탄수화물 및 지방 흡수 지연 활성을 가지는 것으로 생각한다. 본 연구를 통하여 구절초의 추출조건에 따른 생리활성을 확인함으로써 향후 구절초를 이용한 건강기능식품의 소재 등으로 이용 가능할 것으로 생각한다. This study was designed to determine optimal extraction conditions of Chrysanthemum zawadskii (CZ) with high yield of bioactive compounds (linarin, polyphenols, and flavonoids) and improved in vitro activities. Ethanol extracts were examined at different concentrations (0, 30, 50, 70, and 95%) and temperatures (50 and 70°C). The recommended extraction conditions were 50% ethanol at 70°C for 4 h, which gave the highest yield of linarin, polyphenols, and flavonoids. This extract appeared to have the greatest ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities (87.81% and 51.42% at 500 μg/mL, respectively) and α-glucosidase (74.59%) and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities (90.44%). As contents of linarin increased, antioxidative activity, inhibitory effects of carbohydrates and lipid absorption of CZ extracts increased as well. From these results, CZ extracts can be used in functional food industries.
