        봄철각결막염 환자의 Shield Ulcer에서 양막이식 1예

        Purpose: Human amniotic membrane has been used to variable ocular surface disorder. We report a case of the usefulness of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) for vernal keratoconjunctivitis "Shield ulcer". Methods: A 12-year-old male patient was diagnosed to have vernal keratoconjunctivitis "Shield ulcer" and treated with medical therapy for four weeks. But he showed severe itiching, foreign body sensation, decreased visual acuity and continued to corneoconjunctival lesion and then, Amniotic membrane transplantation with stromal side down was performed after debridement of the ulcer bed and therapeutic contact lens was applied. Results: At tenth day after AMT, ulcer size was decreased and corneal state was generally improved with restoration of visual acuity. One month after, he has been comfortable with improved visual acuity, giant papillae of upper tarsal conjunctiva was nearly complete remission. Conclusions: AMT is an effective method for managing vernal keratoconjunctivitis "Shield ulcer", that are refractory to conventional medical treatment. 목적 : 인간 양막은 다양한 각막표면 질환에 사용되어 왔다. 이에 저자들은 봄철각결막염의"shield ulcer"가 있는 환자에서 양막 이식술로 성공적인 치료를 시행한 1예를 보고하는 바이다. 대상과 방법 : 봄철각결막염의 shield ulcer 진단 하에 4주 동안 약물치료를 받은 12세 남자환자에서 시력저하와 함께 심한 이물감과, 소양감 및 각결막 병변이 지속되어, 궤양부위를 긁어낸 후 양막 간질부위를 각막 쪽으로 양막 이식을 시행하고, 콘택트렌즈를 착용케 하였다. 결과 : 수술 후 10일째 시력의 호전과 함께, 궤양의 크기가 감소하였으며, 전반적인 각막의 상태가 좋아졌고 한 달 후에는 눈꺼풀판결막의 거대유두가 완전히 사라졌으며, 증상의 소실과 함께 시력도 정상으로 회복되었다. 결론 : 봄철각결막염의 shield ulcer에 대한 양막이식은 약물치료에 반응을 하지 않는 경우 좋은 치료법이 될 것으로 사료된다.

      • 탈식민주의 관점에서 본 Heart of Darkness

        Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness has been studied by many critics since its first publication in 1899. Some have seen it as a great work of English literature while others have found many problems in it, including Chinua Achebe's racism and Edward Said's orientalism. Thus postcolonial theories are theoretical and critical strategies used to examine the culture, literature, politics, history of former colonies of the European empires, and their relation to the rest of the world. They also question such issues as racism, gender, exploitation, resistance, representation, difference, and responses to the influential master discourses of imperial Europe. Throughout the work, Marlow, as a persona of the author, describes the image of Africa as the uncivilized or savage side of the world. Although Marlow shows that the pagan rites and savage dances are not only done by the Africans but ironically by the Europeans as well, the savagery and uncivilization of the Africa is described as Marlow and Kurtz try to quickly escape. Imperialism is at the center of Heart of Darkness. By the 1890's most of the world's 'dark places' had been placed under European control. Conrad also criticized the European imperialism over the colonized countries and the cruelty of the Europeans-their utter darkness in his works. Heart of Darkness was one of the first novels to provide a critical view of European imperial activities. But as an author who lived in a time when some forms of racism seemed natural. Conrad was certainly not completely free from prejudice in his work, Heart of Darkness.

      • A Passage to India에 관한 小考

        The structure of A Passage to India is three-fold, It is composed of three dominant metaphors: 'Mosque', 'Caves' and 'Temple. These three sections of the novel have their narrative as well as symbolic substances and meanings. The episodes in 'Mosque', bring peoples of different cultures and religions together, and they also alienate them from each other. The failure of the Bridge party is an ironic comment on the attempt to forge a link of friendship between east and west, India and Anglo-India, the ruler and the ruled. The party does not go beyond formal civilities and surface graces. The visit to the Marabar Caves is the central episode in the novel. The episodes in the Caves also symbolize not only a spiritual and physical breakdown but the barrier between east and west. After returning from the Marabar Caves to Chandrapore. Aziz is arrested on a charge of having tried to rape Adela in the Caves. The atmosphere in Chandrapore suddenly becomes tense. The trial of Aziz creates social and political tensions in the town and also distrust between Indian and English people. Although E. M. Forster tries to show the harmony between India and Britain in the novel, the last scene in the Mau jungles seems to darken the personal relationship between Aziz and Fielding unless India becomes a free country and all Englishmen as rulers leave India for good.

      • Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)중합에서 중합조건의 영향연구

        Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)(PEOz)는 생체 적합성, 우수한 친수성 등의 많은 장점을 가진 무정형 고분자로서 생물학 또는 의료용 고분자로 주목을 끌고 있다. 또한 PEOz는 말단기에 다양한 기능화를 시킬 수 있고 이를 통해 또 다른 생분해성 고분자와 함께 블록공중합체를 형성하여 약물전달체에 적용하는 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 블록공중합체에 응용될 시 주사슬이 되는 PEOz에 대한 연구를 진행했으며, PEOz polymerization은 methyl p-toluene sulfonate를 개시 제로서 이용해 중합을 실시하여 용이한 분자량 조절을 확인하였고, 중합조건에 따른 고분자의 물성분석을 연구하였다.

        지난 70만 년 동안 동남극 Lützow-Holm만 주변 해역의 생물기원 퇴적물 함량 변화

        Contents of biogenic components [opal, CaCO3, TOC (total organic carbon)] were measured in Core LHB-3PC sediments collected off Lützow-Holm Bay, in order to understand glacial-interglacial cyclic variation of the high-latitude surface-water paleoproductivity, in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean. An age model was established from the correlation of ARM/IRM ratios of Core LHB-3PC with LR04 stack benthic δ18O records, in complement with radiocarbon isotope ages and biostratigraphic Last Appearance Datum (LAD). The core-bottom age was estimated to be about 700 ka. Although the CaCO3 content is very low less than 1.0% throughout the core, the opal and TOC contents show clear glacial-interglacial cyclic variation such that they are high during the interglacial periods (7.2-50.3% and 0.05-1.00%, respectively)and low during the glacial periods (5.2-25.2% and 0.01-0.68%, respectively). According to the spectral analysis, the variation of opal content is controlled mainly by eccentricity forcing and subsequently by obliquity forcing during the last 700 kyrs. The opal contents of Core LHB-3PC also represent the apparent Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT)-related climatic variation in the glacial-interglacial cycles. In particular, the orbital variation of the opal contents shows increasing amplitudes since marine isotope stage (MIS) 11, which defines one of the important paleoclimatic events during the late Quaternary, called the “Mid-Brunhes Event”. Based on the variation of the opal contents in Core LHB-3PC, we suggest that the surfacewater paleoproductivity in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean followed the orbital (glacial-interglacial)cycles, and was controlled mainly by the extent of sea ice distribution during the last 700 kyrs.

        네트멜론 과실 전생육기간 중 유리당 및 전류당의 함량과 관련 효소 활성의 변화

        네트멜론 품종 ‘Sunpower’와 ‘MVP’를 플라스틱 필름 하우스에서 재배하면서 과실의 전 생육기간 동안 매 5일 간격으로 수확하여 과육의 유리당과 전류당의 함량변화와 이들의 대사과정을 촉매하는 효소의 활성을 측정하였다. ‘Sunpower’ 와 ‘MVP’는 품종 간 과실 발달속도가 약 7일 가량 차이가 있었는데, 수분 후 20~30일 만에 과피에 네트가 형성되었으며, 과실의 생체중도 꾸준히 증가하였다. 과실의 전 생육 기간 동안 sucrose, fructose와 glucose가 다량 함유되어 있었고, galactose, stachyose와 raffinose는 소량이었다. 전가용성 당 함량은 과실이 생장하는 동안 계속 증가하였고, 과실로 전류되어 온 sucrose, stachyose와 raffinose는 invertase 와 ɑ-galactosidase에 의해 신속하게 glucose, fructose, 그리고 galactose로 분해되었으며, 이들 단당류는 수분 후 30~35일까지 그 함량이 증가하였다. 그러나 과실의 성숙과 노화가 진행되면서 전류당들의 분해효소의 활성이 급격하게 감소되면서 수분 35일 이후에는 glucose, fructose, 그리고 galactose의 함량은 감소하고, sucrose, stachyose, 그리고 raffinose가 과실 내에 빠르게 축적 되었다. 이상의 결과로부터 네트멜론 과실의 당도의 증가에는 invertase의 활성뿐만 아니라 stachyose와 raffinose를 분해하는 ɑ-galactosidase의 활성도 긴밀하게 작용하는 것으로 제시되었다. A temporal relationship between changes in soluble sugar content and the activity of their hydrolytic enzymes of netted melon fruit during development and senescence was investigated. Analysis for the sugars content of the commercial cultivars ‘Sunpower’ and ‘MVP’ revealed the major soluble sugars in pulp tissue of melon fruit were sucrose, glucose, fructose. In addition, raffinose and stachyose were also found during the ontogeny of the fruit. During a rapid fruit growth, up to 30 days after pollination (DAP), the amount of sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose remained substantially low, ranging from 0.0 to 0.1 miligram per gram fresh weight. However, the level of fructose and glucose maintained relatively high in the tissue, ranging 10 to 25 miligram per gram fresh weight. In accordance with this result, the activity of both acidic and neutral invertase showed a fairly high upto 20 DAP, and followed by a sharp decrease in the activities during maturation and senescence of the fruit. A similar pattern of the change in the activity of both acidic and neutral ɑ-galactosidase also observed during the fruit development and senescence. Concomitantly to this, there was a rapid increase in the pool size of sucrose, raffinose, stachyose, substantiating an increase in soluble sugar contents in the aging fruit. From the present study, it was suggested that in netted melon fruit both invertase and ɑ-galactosidase play an important role in regulating the accumulation of the soluble sugars, which, in turn leads to an increase sweetness of the fruit.
