Subsequent to human settlement into the agricultural life, furniture, as a good closely connected to our daily life, has become a everyday-used instrument which satisfies our artistic and functional needs, and reflect each ethnic group's particular sentiments, aesthetic beliefs and historical religious traditions. Also, the formation and development of furniture have depended not only on the historical or cultural factors but also on such natural ones as geological influences, weather conditions and natural resources, therefore, the furniture falls within the realm of the formative arts, reflecting the culture and mode of life for each period according to traits associated with each era, region and social class. In modern times, materials for and the production method of furniture have been diversified, and the pace of its technological advancement has been swift, as international cultural exchanges have increased with changes in the industrial structure, and as the need for mass production has been felt throughout the industry. The wooden material, which traditionally has been a basic material of the furniture, faces a diminished utility, due to the depletion of forests, environmental concerns, and hikes in its price, In order to overcome these obstacles, developed nations have come up with artificial materials as substitutes and employing them in the mass production of the modern furniture. The artificial materials have been brought about diversification of materials, simplification of the processing method, automation of production lines and a cut in the production cost, and successfully expressed various colors and grains which can not be found in the natural wooden materials by mending the shortcomings of traditional wood and veneer. Thus, in order to apply these artificial materials to the actual designing of furniture, studies on the kind and traits of the material, and processing method are considered essential. Therefore, through the studies on the artificial materials, attempts will be made to recognize the kind of caution to be employed in the application of designs, special features of drafting for each processing methods, and cases on design development.
