The effects of the additives on the microstructure and electrical properties of ZnO varistors sintered for 1 hour at various temperatures have been studied. Experimental results show that the kinds and amounts of the additives have considerable effects on the voltage-current characteristics of ZnO varistors which is closely related with the grain size of the sample. The grain size becomes smaller as the amount of the additivies is increased, which is proved to be the cause for a higher breakdown voltage. Nonlinear exponent(α), one of the most important factors in the varistor, also shows its dependence upon the additive. The highest α value of 45 is obtained from the sample containing 7mol% additives, which is sintered at 1250℃. αreaches its maximum value when the grain size is in the range of 9-10㎛.
