Curcumin, of which a critical characteristic is the capacity of crossing the blood-brain barrier, has been reported to induce the expression of neuroprotective heme oxygenase (HO)-1. The aim of this study is to compare HO-1-inducing capacity and neuroprotective activity of curcumin, its demethoxy (demethoxycurcumin, DMC; bis-demethoxycurcumin, BDMC) and hydrogenated derivatives (tetrahydrocurcumin, THC) in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells. Curcumin attenuated glutamate-induced cell death through HO-1 expression. DMC lacking a methoxy group on one of the aromatic rings possessed slightly lower activity in HO-1 expression and neuroprotection than curcumin. Similarly, BDMC, which lacks two methoxy groups on both of the aromatic rings, showed less activity than curcumin. These findings suggest that the presence of methoxy groups on the aromatic ring is required to enhance neuroprotective HO-1 expression. The reduction of the diarylheptadienone chain of curcumin by hydrogen, as in THC, was accompanied by a complete loss of ability to induce HO-1 expression and neuroprotection, suggesting that the conjugated double bonds of the central seven-carbon chain of curcumin may be essential for its ability to induce neuroprotective HO-1 expression. Our findings may provide useful information for further development of neuroprotective HO-1 inducers.
등속성 체간 훈련이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 체간 근력과 보행 및 균형 향상에 미치는 효과

본 연구의 목적은 만성 뇌졸중 환자를 대상으로 등속성 체간 훈련이 근력과 보행, 그리고 균형에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이었다. 본 연구의 대상자는 만성 뇌졸중 환자 20명으로, 일반적 물리치료와 등속성 체간 훈련을 실시한 집단(10명)과 일반적 물리치료만을 실시한 집단(10명)으로 나누었다. 등속성 체간 훈련은 등속성 장비(Con-trex)를 이용하여 체간의 굴근과 신근의 강화를 위해 90°/sec에서 5회 1세트, 120°/sec에서 15회 1세트, 150°/sec에서 15회 1세트를 주 3회 20분 동안 총 8주간 실시하였다. 실험 전, 후에 체간 근력 검사, 10 m 보행 검사, 안정성 지수(stability index), 체중분산지수(weight distribution index), 무게중심의 좌표(coordinates of center of pressure), 일어나 걸어가기(timed "up and go") 검사를 실시하여 체간 근력, 보행, 정적 균형 및 동적 균형 능력을 비교하였다. 결과에서 실험군은 체간 신근의 근력, 10 m 보행 검사, 무게 중심의 좌표, 일어나 걸어가기 검사가 유의하게 향상되었고(p<.05), 대조군에서는 유의한 차이가 없었다. 또한 두 군간에서는 실험 후 체간 신근의 근력에서만 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<.05). 본 연구의 결과로 등속성 체간 훈련이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 체간 근력, 보행, 정적 균형 및 동적 균형 능력의 향상에 효과적임을 알 수 있었다. 이는 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 기능 향상에 효과적인 훈련 방법을 제공할 것이며, 앞으로 체간 근력 강화 운동의 효과에 대한 다양한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다. This study was to evaluate the effects of a isokinetic trunk exercise in strength, gait and balance of patients with chronic stroke. Participants were randomly allocated to two groups: experimental(n=10) and control(n=10). Both groups received general physical therapy for 5 session 30 minutes per week during 8 weeks. During 8 weeks of the experiment, both groups received a 30 minute general physical therapy session 5 times in each week. The experimental group practiced an additional 20 minute isokinetic trunk exercise that consisted of 3 programs for trunk flexor and extensor muscles. The results were evaluated by trunk muscle strength test, 10 m gait walking test, stability index, weight distribution index and coordinates of center of pressure. The results of study were as follows : There were significantly differences in the amount of change of trunk extensor muscle strength, 10 m gait walking test, stability index, weight distribution index, and coordinates of center of pressure in the experimental group(p<.05), whereas there were not significantly differences in control group(p<.05). Consequently, isokinetic trunk exercise improved trunk muscle strength, gait, static and dynamic balance. These results suggested that the isokinetic trunk exercise was feasible and suitable for patients with chronic stroke.

Pyrochlore type Pb₂Ru₂O_(6.5) powders with different amounts of RuO₂were synthesized, mixed with organic vehicle, solvent to form the resistor pastes. The properties of pastes were investigated after printing and sintering. ZrO₂, Nb₂O_5, CuO were added in these pastes as the TCR modifiers and the variations of TCR, with amounts of modifiers were investigated. In all cases, results showed that appropriate amounts of modifiers were less than 2wt%.
