實存問題의 超絶主義的 解決 : Saul Bellow의 Herzog에서

This paper attempts to investigate how human beings will be able to transcend the modern wasteland outlook and response to the law of heart by going through the conflict between Herzog's romantic sensibilities and his Faustian ideology. Bellow portrays Moses Herzog as a moral teacher leading mankind away from a concern with ideology that trivializes the individual person to a respect for feeling and the sacred quality. He tries to live out marvelous qualities vaguly comprehanded. However, with the discovery that his wife and his best friend have made him a cuckold, he finds himself lost in the wasteland of existential nothingness and he is driven to explain, justify his situation and to put it in perpective. Surrounded "Reality Instructors" who are progmatic every day nay-sayers, Herzog ponders whether to adopt their amoral standard or to follow the promtings of his heart. And he engages in an internal debate with great thinkers of civilization searching for some insight to alleviate the suffering in his life and to explain the vicous, immoral nature of modern society. In unmailed letters he argues against the commonplace of the wasteland philosophy and the cheap mental stimulenta of alienation, modern thinkers have commonly asserted. But eventually he realizes that no set of abstract concepts can explain the mystery of life and he does not earn the right to refute the wastelanders until he has looked deep into their void. In a courtroom, he expierences various kind of evils. Besides the sordid courtroom trials which he observes, through the bizarre automobile accident, the healing love of Ramona, and his questioning, argumentative letters, Herzog finally achieves an objective view of his absurd predicament. His plunge in the void convinces him that synthesis, justification, intellectual affirmation are impossible. The realization that intellectual affirmation is attainable enables Herzog to abandon his philosophic contention and paves the way for his move toward a transcendental affirmation of the heart. Moving through the existentialism to transcendentalism, he solves his problem for survival.

Chaucer의 Humor와 Irony : The Canterbury Tales Prologue를 中心하여

Chaucer의 대표적인 작품인 Canterbury tales는 Thomas a Becket를 모신 Canterbury 사원으로 순례 여행하는 도중 여행을 즐겁게 하기 위하여 혹은 여행의 외로움을 덜기 위하여 서로 교환된 이야기를 골자로 엮은 시이며 그 중 특히 유명한 것은 General Prologue이다. 이 Prologue는 그 순례집단의 기억할 가치 있는 24명의 인물을 초상화의 화랑인 양 생생하게 묘사해 놓아서 마치 중세사회의 축도라는 감을 던져주고 있다. 그러면 대개의 계급별로 중세인들의 모습과 Chaucer의 Irony와 Humour가 교차된 시적 표현을 음미해 보려고 한다. Chaucer의 생시 중세도 기울어져 봉건적 사회체제가 붕괴되어 가는 과정에 있고 르네상스의 싹이 트기 시작할 때지만 아직 그 사회의 상층을 이루고 있는 사람들은 무엇보다 대토지 소유자 계급-Duke, Marquis, Baron, Knight이다. Chaucer가 묘사한 일행 중에는 신분이 높은 기사가 맨 처음 등장한다. 「그는 용감하고 기사도, 진리, 명예 그리고 관대성과 예의를 무엇보다 사랑했다.」그의 영주의 전쟁에 용감하게 종사하여 기독교국이나 이교도국에 여행하지 않은 곳은 없었다. 「그리고 일평생 어떤 사람에게도 무례한 언사를 농한 일이 없었다.」진실로 모든 사람이 우러러 보는 중세의 꽃이였다.

다양한 블록 길이를 갖는 Polycarbonate-Poly(methyl methacrylate)공중합체의 제조에 관한 연구

Bisphenol-A의 크래킹에 의해 합성한 p-isopropenylphenol을 분자량이 조절된 폴리카보네이트(PC)의 제조에 사용하였다. 말단정지제로 p-isopropenylphenol을 사용하여 triphosgene과 bisphenol-A의 계면중합에 의해 말단 비닐기를 함유한 PC를 합성하였고, 이때 사용한 p-isopropenylphenol의 중량분율에 따라 2,000-44,000의 수평균 분자량을 갖는 PC를 얻을 수 있었다. 위에서 제조한 PC와 MMA 단량체를 부가 공중합시켜 다양한 블록 길이를 갖는 PC-PMMA 공중합체를 제조하였다. 공중합체의 구조 및 블록 비는 FT-IR. 원소분석, ¹H-NMR에 의해 조사하였다. 공중합체의 블록 비는 주로 PC와 MMA 단량체의 중량비에 의해 조절되었다. 특히 이와 같은 공중합체는 광학 현미경의 관찰로부터 PC/SAN 블렌드의 상용성을 향상시키는 것을 알 수 있었다. A p-isopropenylphenol synthesized by cracking of bisphenol-A was used in the preparation of molecular-weight-controlled polycarbonate(PC). PC containing a vinyl moiety in the terminal group was synthesized by interfacial polymerization of bisphenol-A and triphosgene using p-isopropenylphenol as a chain terminator. PC with the number average molecular weight of 2,000-44,000 can be obtained depending on the weight fractions of p-isopropenylphenol. PC-PMMA copolymers with varying block lengths were prepared by addition copolymerization of the PC and MMA monomer. The structure and block ratios of the copolymers were investigated through the measurements of FI-IR, elemental analysis and ¹H-NMR. The block ratios of the copolymers are mainly controlled by the weight ratios of PC and MMA. Observations of PC/SAN blends containing these copolymers via optical microscopy indicated that the copolymers improved the compatibility of PC/SAN blends.

웹의 크기와 다양성은 꾸준히 증가하고 있으며, 이는 웹 콘텐츠의 공급자, 소비자, 광고주 모두에게 여러 도전과제들을 던진다. 이에, 개별 웹 사이트(페이지)에 방문하는 방문자들의 인구통계학적 특성은 매우 유용한 정보이다. 개별 웹사이트의 주방문자들의 인구통계학적 특성을 예측할 수 있다면, 이는 공급자에게 자신의 콘텐츠가 의도한 방문자들을 효과적으로 끌어들일지의 점검을 가능케 할 것이며, 광고주에게 광고효과를 더욱 높여줄 웹 페이지를 찾게 해 줄 것이다. 이를 위해, 기존의 스터디들이 여러 방법론을 제시하였으나 대부분 쿠키 및 사용자등록을 통해 수집 된 클릭스트림 데이터에 의존하여 그 확장성 및 비용에 문제가 있고, 광고주는 얻기 어려운 데이터라는 한계가 있다. 이 연구에서는, 해당 웹사이트(페이지)로부터 직접 구할 수 있는 지역신호의 활용을 통해 기존 스터디들의 한계점을 극복하는 방법론을 제시하고자 한다. 기존 스터디에서도 지역신호를 활용하려는 시도들이 있었으나, 이러한 노력들에 더해, 웹페이지에서 직접 추출 가능한 의미론적 단서들을 활용, 인구통계학적 특성을 예측하는 방법론을 제안하고 효과를 검증하고자 한다. 그 결과, 기존 방법론의 한계점들을 극복한 이 방법론이 예측의 정확성에도 효과적이고 경쟁력이 있음을 알 수 있었고, 또한, 기존의 방법론에 비해 그 효율성에 있어서도 우수함을 확인하였다.

제9회 세계과학커뮤니케이션회의(PCST-9)가 아시아에서 처음으로 지난 5월 17~19일 서울 삼성동 코엑스 그랜드볼룸에서 열렸다. 과학과 일반 대중사이의 거리를 좁히는 방안을 연구하기 위해 세계 40여 개국의 과학커뮤니케이션 관련자들이 이 자리에 모였다. 스페인 명문 폼프 파브라 대학에서 과학커뮤니케이션을 가르치고 있는 블라디미르 드 세미르(Vladimir de Semir) PCST 네트워크 회장을 지난 5월 17일 행사장에서 만나 이번 회의의 특성과 의미를 들어봤다.

허무주의와 그 극복 : Saul Bellow의 초기 작품에서

Saul Bellow rejects nihilim, pessimistic romanticism, unredeemed black humor and hatred of the present and of western civilization. In contrast to many of contemporaries, therefore, he affirms the possibility of meaningful individual life in contemporary America, with the stress placed on possibility. Such a writer's attitude is permeated through all of his works. This paper attempts to investigate how human beings will be able to overcome the modern wasteland outlook, dealing with determinism versus the freedom of will, the problem ensued from the quest for identity and meaning, by especially making reference to "Two Morning Molologues" and Dangling Man of Bellow's early works. A short story entitled "Two Morning Monologues" justaposes in its nameless characters Bellow's man of determinism and man of will. Both characters, a without-work-boy and a gambler, consider the panic and draft which threatens them a sign of their helplessness before the forces of history. The boy's reaction to this loss of freedom is to turn inward from the public realm and toward a states of deterministic pessimism. On the contrary, the gambler is a embodiment of man's faith in the autonomy of will, and his path is toward success in asserting the free will, affirming his value in the external world by occasional moments of self-determinism. But in Dangling Man, Bellow contains the qualties of both characters in a single one, called Joseph, who suffers from the malaise followed by a feeling of disillusionment which results from his surrounded outworld. Turning inward like a without-work boy, he is bent on questing for identity, In a result of his stubborn fight for identity, he holds a great incredibility of the power of the reason in which he has believed as a philosophy of life and he is aware that a separate destiny is impossible in a world in which the war dominates the natianal life, since the internal crisis is not a matter of private will. By accepting the destiny given to an individual in the mechanized society, he gives himself away and surmounts the nihilistic pessimism. Generally, despite Bellws heroe's longing for social participation, he mourns under the weight of mechanized world, turning back upon himself and faces biological, meta-physical issues which are inherent in his nature. He complains that he is a victim of society, but, discovering that he is a victim of himself, he accepts the culture determisim. Thus, Saul Bellow's novels move from alienation to accomodation.

대기업의 디지털 산업 확장 유형의 탐색적 연구

Firms have many ways to expand their businesses including M&A. Big companies in online and offline businesses show different ways of expansion with different objectives to expand their digital businesses quickly. Expansions for technical reasons are to acquire technolies they do not have while those for business reasons are M&A for offline companies to have competence in markets by acquiring online companies. Other ways of expansions include spin-off and group participation after investments for startups. Various ways of expansions are chosen because they are optimal choices depending on situations the companies face, they have different strengths and weaknesses. To analyze the strengths and weaknesses of those options for expansion at this stage where the expansion for digital business is academically valuable, and also practically meaningful in terms of providing insights for companies’ decision making in choosing opitions for expansions. M&A of online companies to make multi-channels by offline companies have risks of failing to internalize online companies and have enough synergy effects. Also, spin-off is a relatively less risky way of expansion while the speed of expansion is slower than establishing external startups with some shares of equity and making them as affiliated companies. External startups are good for speed of expansion while there are risks of legal regulations and negative awareness by the public. 인수합병을 비롯하여 기업은 여러 형태의 확장 방법을 가지고 있다. 한국의 온오프라인 대기업들은 신속한 디지털 산업 확장에 있어 여러 가지 목적들에 따른 다양한 확장 방식을 보여주고 있다. 기술적 이유에 의한 확장의 경우 부족한 기술적 요소 획득을 위한 목적이며, 사업적 이유로 인한 확장은 시장 경쟁력 확보를 위한 동종산업의 오프라인 기업이 온라인 진출을 목적으로 하는 합병이 있다. 다른 확장 형태들로는 기업의 관련 사업 확장을 목적으로 내부에서 성장시킨 기업을 분사시키는 형태의 확장과 신생 관계사들에 부분적 투자를 하고 성장 후 그룹 자회사로 흡수하는 외부로부터의 인수 합병 형태의 확장 등이 있다. 다양한 형태의 확장은 상황에 따른 최적의 선택이라는 측면도 있지만, 각기 다른 장단점을 가지고 있으며 기업들은 이를 고려한 선택을 하고 있다. 그러한 이유로 기업의 확장 방법들의 목적과 장단점을 학문적으로 검토해 보는 것은 학술적으로도 이 시점에서 필요하다고 생각되며, 실무적으로도 기업들에 통찰력을 제공할 수 있는 가치가 있다고 생각된다. 동종 오프라인 기업의 멀티채널화 합병의 경우 온라인 기업 내재화의 성공 가능성 및 시너지 효과가 낮을 위험성이 있으며, 내부 성장 기업의 분사는 안정성은 있지만, 내부 자원의 제약에 따른 확장 속도가 느린 문제가 있을 수 있다. 반면 외부 창업 후 자회사로 흡수시키는 경우 법적 규제 가능성과 외부의 부정적 인식 우려의 위험성이 존재한다.

Bernard Malamud의 文體와 敍述技法에 관한 연구

This paper attempts to examine Jewishness and Romanticism in Bernard Malamud's works by investigating and analyzing the prose style and narrative method employed in the most important of his short stories dan novels. One of Malamud's chief distinctions as an artist is his command of a particular literary idiom which bears his own signature and has permeated Jewish-American writing. Malamud's prose style can be devided into standard belletristic one, Yiddish dialect and the mixed one which combines both bellestristic and dialect style. Among them the dialect style, deliberately evoking the sound of Yiddish, demonstrates Malamud's familiaritv with the old mother tongue. The suffering and the painful comedy are embedded in the Yiddish voice. The sweetly tragic and the bitterly comic must, to a significant degree, be attributed to the style, in which lies Jewishness what is called a distinctive quality of Malamud's novels. The Jewishness implies the suffering of East-European Jews as an oppressed people who somehow managed to survive centuries of humiliation and persecution. Malamud uses Jewishness not only as an ethical symbol, but also as an universal human condition which all the modern people in the mechanized society should suffer from. But these styles cannot be studied in isolatin from writer's narrative method because his artistry proves itself not only in the creation and practice of these styles, but also in the diverse narrative functions to which he puts them. One style described by Malamud commonly reveals in a form of epiphany at the end of most stories and novels. The other of his narrative mode is fantastic devices which is represented in the fusion of realistic and epic style and the description of expansive dilution. The writer's romantic mentalities manifest themselves in the narrative method by which he can spread the wings of unrestricted imagination. Such fantastic strategies stem from the convention of a Jewish traditional literature that the marginal man, wondering about foreign land, feels convinced of a ray of hope or possibility, overcoming his desperation and frustration he suffers, caused by centuries of humiliation and persecution. This paper demonstrates that all the stories and novels of Malamud are permeated with his romantic elements and Jewishness by examining his style and narrative devices.
