Backward-Looking Preferences and Present Bias
Vol.22 No.1
This paper presents a model of backward-looking preferences in which an agent forms a memory based on his past consumptions and his current utility depends not only on his current consumption but also on his memory. Several memory formation processes are discussed, and it is shown that under some processes backward-looking preferences generate present bias.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) defined as passage of gastric contents into the esophagus without symptoms is a common physiologic gastrointestinal problem in infants, children and even in adults. But gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) defined as symptoms or complications of GER is a disease entity to find out the reason and treat. After the era of 1970 we have been studying about GERD with the development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods. I already introduced the nature and the fundamental knowledge of GERD in the opening symposium of KSPGHAN in 1998. Now, I will introduce the guidelines for evaluation and treatment of GERD which was recommended by the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and American Pediatric Association which was published in 2001. And I will introduce progressing subjects and the forecoming issues to be solved in near future. Those are as followings. Does GERD cause otolaryngologic symptoms such as chronic sinusitis and chronic otitis? Is GERD inherited? Can we find out the child who will become GERD in adult life and the way to reduce the incidence of Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer? Is long term PPI therapy safe in children?
Vol.12 No.3
This study was conducted to clarify the effects of adhesive methods and materials, and foliar fertilizations on the epiphytic growth of Sarcanthus scolopendrifolius and Neofinetia falcata. The time required to attach the plants to the adhesive materials was from 1.10 to 2.15 minutes when a flash bonding agent was only used as a adhesives. However, required times to attach the plants to the adhesive materials were needed from 0.10 to 0.23 minutes, when water was sprayed on the adhesive materials before using the flash bonding agent. Plant growth was affected by the adhesive materials, and it became better in the order of Chinese juniper, natural stones, turban shell, and bamboo of adhesive materials, etc. Epiphytic growth of two orchids attached to the natural stones increased significantly when foliar fertilization was sprayed at intervals of 14 days. The plant growth of orchids attached to the Chinese juniper as a adhesive materials became better when foliar application was sprayed at intervals of 28 days.
Potential Games with Change Cost
Vol.44 No.2
We study strategic games where each player has a reference action and incurs a change cost when s/he chooses an action different from his/her reference action. We propose a generalization of exact potential games, called weak potential games, in which the net payoff gain of a deviating player does not exceed the differential of a potential function. We show that a maximizer of a weak potential function is an equilibrium and characterize weak potential games by using a cycle condition. Lastly, we study the property of weak potential maximizers in 2×2 coordination games.
Cultural Barriers in International Trade and the Protection and Promotion of Culture
2015 The Korean Economic Review Vol.31 No.2
I present a model of international trade with cultural barriers and cultural learning. There are two countries that can produce a manufacturing good and cultural goods and can trade with each other. Due to cultural difference, consumers in a country have difficulty in appreciating cultural goods produced in the other country, which creates cultural barriers, and consumers can overcome these barriers by investing in cultural learning. I first study trade equilibrium given cultural barriers in the two countries, and then I analyze decisions on cultural learning under three different scenarios and compare them. Based on the analysis, I provide economic explanations for countries’ policies to protect and promote their own cultures at home and abroad.
