This study explores manufacturing technology and basic properties of high strength cement composites at 2,000㎏/㎥ of specific weight. It is suggested that lightweight-high strength cement composites can be produced by substituting silica sand in ulta-high performance concrete mixture with lightweight materials such as solid bubbles and lightweight fine aggregates. The 28-day compressive strengths of cement composites with solid bubbles were from 116MPa to 141MPa at below 2.0g/㎤ of unit density while the cement composites with lightweight aggregates possessed lower compressive strength and higher unit density. The specific weight calculated from mixture proportions did not have significant difference with unit density of hardened cement composites, indicating that unit density of hardened cement composites can be estimated from the specific weight in mixture proportions.

This study was to provide the basic information for the development of thermal weeder which uses LPG as fuel. Weed seeds of Digitaria sanguinalis S. and Portulaca oleracea L. mainly developed in from and forestry nurseries were used as experimental samples. At different irradiation temperature(60, 80, 100, 150, 200℃), the dffects of weed seed species(digitalis, purslane), condition of seed(dry, soaked), and irradiation time(2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 180, 300 sec) on seed viability were investigated was investigated by examining interaction and main effect of experimental factors. The results showed that viability of weed seed was significantly affected by all irradiation temperature tested. Irradiation time significantly affected on viability of weed seed on all levels of irradiation temperature. also, there were interactions between condition of weed seed and irradiation time on seed viability at each irradiation temperature.

This study sought to demonstrate bone mineral density (BMD) conditions in elderly femalepatients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Inaddition, we sought to determine whether their BMD conditions differ from those ofcommunity-based females without knee OA. Finally we sought to determine whetherclinical statuses are related to BMD in the knee OA patients. BMD conditions in 347 femalepatients undergoing TKA and 273 community-based females were evaluated. Additionally, comparative analyses of BMD between age and body mass index-matched knee OA groups(n = 212) and the control groups (n = 212) were performed. In the pre-matched knee OAgroup, regression analyses were performed to determine whether preoperative clinicalstatuses were related to BMD. Considerable prevalence of coexistent osteoporosis (31%)was found in the pre-matched knee OA patients undergoing TKA. We found no significantdifferences of the BMD T-scores and the prevalence of osteoporosis between the age andbody mass index-matched knee OA and control groups. In the pre-matched knee OApatients, poorer preoperative clinical scores were related to poorer BMD T-scores in theproximal femur and/or lumbar spine. Our study suggests that more attention should bepaid to identify and treat osteoporosis in elderly female patients with advanced knee OAundergoing TKA.

The present study investigated the renoprotective effect of an Artemisia asiatica extract and eupatilin in kidney epithelial (LLC-PK1) cells. Although cisplatin is effective against several cancers, its use is limited due to severe nephrotoxicity. Eupatilin is a flavonoid compound isolated from the Artemisia plant and possesses antioxidant as well as potent anticancer properties. In the LLC-PK1 cellular model, the decline in cell viability induced by oxidative stress, such as that induced by cisplatin, was significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by the A. asiatica extract and eupatilin. The increased protein expressions of phosphorylated JNK and p38 by cisplatin in cells were markedly reduced after A. asiatica extract or eupatilin cotreatment. The elevated expression of cleaved caspase-3 was significantly reduced by A. asiatica extract and eupatilin, and the elevated percentage of apoptotic cells after cisplatin treatment in LLC-PK1 cells was markedly decreased by cotreatment with A. asiatica extract or eupatilin. Taken together, these results suggest that A. asiatica extract and eupatilin could cure or prevent cisplatin-induced renal toxicity without any adverse effect; thus, it can be used in combination with cisplatin to prevent nephrotoxicity.

Background: Fermented black ginseng (FBG) is produced through several cycles of steam treatment of raw ginseng, at which point its color turns black. During this process, the original ginsenoside components of raw ginseng (e.g., Re, Rg1, Rb1, Rc, and Rb2) are altered, and less-polar ginsenosides are generated (e.g., Rg3, Rg5, Rk1, and Rh4). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of FBG on wound healing. Methods: The effects of FBG on tube formation and on scratch wound healing were measured using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and HaCaT cells, respectively. Protein phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase was evaluated via Western blotting. Finally, the wound-healing effects of FBG were assessed using an experimental cutaneous wounds model in mice. Results and Conclusion: The results showed that FBG enhanced the tube formation in HUVECs and migration in HaCaT cells. Western blot analysis revealed that FBG stimulated the phosphorylation of p38 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase in HaCaT cells. Moreover, mice treated with $25{\mu}g/mL$ of FBG exhibited faster wound closure than the control mice did in the experimental cutaneous wounds model in mice.
