Melanogenesis is a physiological process resulted in the synthesis of melanin pigments, which have a role in protecting skin from the damaging effect of ultra-violet(UV) radiation. The main aim of the present study was to examine the effect of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica on melanogenesis. Cells were cultured in the presence of methanol extracts from Ulmus davidiana var. japonica for 48 h, and there were estimated total melanin content as a final product and activity of tyrosinase, a key enzyme, in melanogenesis. Methanol extracts of the bark Ulmus davidiana var. japonica increased tyrosinase activity and melanin contents in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, It was observed that only 100 μg/ml methanol extract stimulates melanin secretion in B16/F10 melanoma cells by 140% at 48 h treatment and activity of tyrosinase increased by 250 % in the presence of same concentration.
Design Improvement and Measurement of a Rapid Single Flux Quantum Confluence Buffer

Rapid Single flux quantum (RSFQ) confluence buffer is widely used in complex superconductive digital circuits. In this work, we have improved the currently used confluence buffer and obtained a more soundly designed confluence buffer. In simulations, improvements in the bias margins of 11 % and the global margins of 10%, compared to the previously used confluence buffer, were achieved. Global margins are very important in estimating a process error range allowed in fabrications. We used two circuit simulation tools, WRspice and Julia, to design and optimize the confluence buffer. We used Xic to obtain a mask layout. We fabricated the improved circuits by using Nb technology. The test results at low frequency showed that the improved confluence buffer operated correctly and had a very wide main bias margin of +/-43% enhanced from +/-26% of the previously used confluence buffer.
Profound Hypothermia and Circulatory Arrest for Adult PDA Surgery: Case report

Correction of a calcified patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a difficult surgical procedure. Simple ligation or division of PDA is not possible if diffuse circumferential calcification is present. Several techniques using cardiopulmonary bypass and closure of PDA from within the aorta or pulmonary artery have been introduced. And the surgical procedure is performed under profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest. Total ischemia time should be less than 30 minutes, which is free from the organ damage by the circulatory arrest. Barbiturates, calcium channel blockers and steroids are used for brain protection. We experienced successful use of these techniques for adult female patch closure of PDA and reviewed the anesthetic considerations of the profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest for cardiac surgery.
Movement of the Magnetic Flux Quanta in Inductive Components of the Superconductive Digital Devices

Magnetic ux quanta moving through inductors and gated by Josephson junctions play a critical role in superconductive digital devices. We have studied optimal movements of magnetic ux quanta in the inductors of various superconductive digital devices. Since rapid single ux quantum (RSFQ) toggle ip- ops are major components in constructing practical digital systems, we chose these devices to study the ux movement in inductors. The ux motions through these devices were studied by using two circuit-simulation tools, WRspice and Julia. With an optimal movement of the magnetic ux, the devices operated in a sounder fashion. To test the improvement of the ux motion, we fabricated the devices by using Nb technology. We used Xic for a layout tool. The test results showed that the toggle ip- op with improved ux quanta movements operated correctly at 100 kHz and had a very wide main bias margin of +/က 63 %, showing that the movements of ux quanta were near optimal.
Role of reactive thrombocytosis after primary cytoreductive surgery in advanced ovarian cancer

Objective: Surgery induced thrombocytosis occurs frequently in various disease. We investigated the incidence of reactive thrombocytosis after maximal cytoreductive surgery in epithelial ovarian cancer and its role on survival. Methods: An electronic chart review was performed of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer patients who had primary cytoreductive surgery from January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017. Besides from known clinical prognostic factors, serum platelet counts at various time points including before surgery, during peri-operative period, and on each cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy were collected. Results: 474 patients were eligible for the analysis. Median age was 55 years (18 -88) and pretreatment CA 125 was 1519.2 U/mL (5.5-16719). 401 patients (84.6%) were FIGO Stage III and serous histology was most common (405 patients, 85.4%). 79 patients (22.6%) had splenectomy and optimal cytoreduction (residual < 1cm) was achieved at 326 patients (68.8%). Thrombocytosis was observed in 273 patients (57.6%) patients in the entire cohort. Especially, higher platelet counts were observed in patients with splenectomy compared without splenectomy (e.g. on post-operative day 12, p<0.001). Subgroup of patients who still had thrombocytosis during adjuvant chemotherapy showed poorer survivals than the others. In particular, thrombocytosis on 5th cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy showed most significant impact on overall survival (HR; 1.871, 95%CI; 1.034-3.386, p=0.038) among various time points in multivariate analysis. In a logistic regression model, splenectomy (p<0.001) and optimal cytoreduction (p=0.025) significantly attributed to thrombocytosis on 5th cycle. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that reactive thrombocytosis after primary cytoreductive surgery is associated with poor survival in advanced ovarian cancer, particularly when splenectomy was performed and thrombocytosis was observed during adjuvant chemotherapy. New approaches to increase oncological outcomes are needed for this subgroup of patients.
