      • Sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis in Korean men with COPD based on KNHANES 2008-2011

        Backgrounds: Sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis are known to be systemic features associated with COPD. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis and the relationship between those in Korean men with COPD. Methods: Data on a total of 4586 male participants who underwent pulmonary function test and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were extracted from KNHANES between 2008 and 2011. The associations between clinical factors including lung function, BMD and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI: indicator for sarcopenia) were analyzed. Results: Prevalence of sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis was higher in the 864 males with COPD than in participants with normal lung function (sarcopenia: 4.7% vs 1.8%, osteopenia/osteoporosis: 50.2%/6.5% vs 35.5%/2.9%; all P < 0.001). The proportion of patients with sarcopenia or osteoporosis increased significantly as GOLD stage progressed from stage II to III/IV (sarcopenia: 4.5% vs 21.8%; P < 0.001, osteoporosis: 5.4% vs 16.4%; P=0.006), while the change of osteopenia was not significant between the stages. Sarcopenic COPD patients had osteopenia/osteoporosis more frequently than those without [37/41 (90.2%) vs 453/823 (55.0%); P < 0.001]. ASMI was one of the independent predictors for osteopenia/osteoporosis in patients with COPD (HR 0.449; 95% CI 0.329-0.612; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis were more prevalent in Korean men with COPD than those with normal lung function, and sarcopenia was closely correlated with osteopenia/osteoporosis.

        To prepare measures for practical policy utilization and the control of heavy metals, hazard control related institutions by country, present states of control by country, and present states of control by heavy metals were examined. Hazard control cases by heavy metals in various countries were compared and analyzed. In certain countries (e.g., the U.S., the U.K., and Japan), hazardous substances found in foods (e.g., arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury) are controlled. In addition, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) recommends calculating the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of individual heavy metals instead of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) to compare their pollution levels considering their toxicity accumulated in the human body. In Korea, exposure assessments have been conducted, and in other countries, hazardous substances are controlled by various governing bodies. As such, in Korea and other countries, diverse food heavy metal monitoring and human body exposure assessments are conducted, and reducing measures are prepared accordingly. To reduce the danger of hazardous substances, many countries provide leaflets and guidelines, develop hazardous heavy metal intake recommendations, and take necessary actions. Hazard control case analyses can assist in securing consumer safety by establishing systematic and reliable hazard control methods.

        기본운동중심의 신체활동이 유아의 기초체력과 신체활동 즐거움에 미치는 효과

        본 연구는 유아교사가 안정·이동·조작운동을 좀 더 쉽게 유아들에게 접근할 수 있도록 기본운동중심의 신체활동을 구성하여, 이러한 활동이 유아의 기초체력과 신체활동 즐거움에 미치는 효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 I시에 소재한 H어린이집의 만5세, 2개 학급의 유아들로서 실험집단 20명과 비교집단 20명 총40명이었고, 12주 동안 매일 20분씩 총60회, 실험집단은 기본운동중심의 신체활동에, 비교집단은 자유놀이중심의 바깥놀이 신체활동에 참여하였다. 유아의 기초체력의 측정은 유연성, 민첩성, 평형성, 순발력, 근지구력으로 구성된 안을섭(2005)의 기초체력검사 도구가 사용되었으며, 신체활동 즐거움검사는 자신감, 재미, 건강유지 및 미적체험, 협동심, 창의성 요인으로 이루어진 김인호(2010)의 도구를 일부 수정하여 사용하였다. 연구결과, 기초체력은 기본운동중심의 신체활동에 참여한 실험집단 유아가 유연성, 민첩성, 평형성, 순발력, 근지구력에서 자유놀이중심의 바깥놀이 신체활동에 참여한 비교집단 유아보다 통계적으로 높은 점수를 보였다. 신체활동 즐거움 또한 실험집단 유아가 비교집단 유아에 비해 신체활동 즐거움의 모든 요인에서 통계적으로 유의하게 높게 나타나, 기본운동중심의 신체활동은 유아의 기초체력과 신체활동 즐거움에 긍정적인 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었다. This study had the objective of examining what effects physical activity based on fundamental movement had on young children`s physical fitness and enjoyment of physical activity by providing physical activity programs designed by day-care center teachers that enable a more child-friendly approach for stability movement, locomotor movement and manipulative movement. The subjects were 40 five-years old young children (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the comparison group) from two classes of H day-care center located in I city. The research was conducted in a total of 60 twenty minute daily sessions during a period of 12 weeks, where the experimental group participated in physical activity based on fundamental movement and the comparison group participated in free outdoor physical activity. The measurement of the physical fitness of the young children was conducted on their flexibility, agility, balance, power and muscular endurance based on the physical fitness measurement tool designed by An Eul Seob (2005), and the measurement of enjoyment of physical activity was conducted on the elements of self-confidence, fun, maintenance of health and aesthetic experiences, cooperation and creativity based on the tool designed by Kim Inho (2010). The research results showed that the young children in the experimental group that participated in physical activity based on fundamental movement showed statistically higher measurements in flexibility, agility, balance, power and muscular endurance than that of the young children in the comparison group that participated in free outdoor physical activity. Young children in the experimental group also showed statistically significant higher measurements for enjoyment of physical activity than that of the young children in the comparison group, confirming that physical activity based on fundamental movement had a positive effects on both the physical fitness and also the enjoyment of physical activity of young children.

        유아교사들의 삶의 질에 관한 실태분석

        본 연구는 한국판 세계보건기구 삶의 질 간편형 척도(WHOQOL-Bref)를 이용하여 유치원과 어린이집에 근무하는 유아교사들의 삶의 질 실태를 분석함으로써 이들의 삶의 질을 증진시킬 수 있는 대책마련을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 전북지역 유아교사 498명을 대상으로 설문조사한 결과 첫째, 유아교사들의 전반적인 삶의 질 정도는 5점 중 3점대로 만족하지도, 불만족하지도 않은 보통정도의 비율을 보였고, 하위영역에서는 유치원교사의 경우, 신체적 영역에서 가장 높은 만족도를, 전반적인 삶의 질 영역에서 가장 낮은 만족도를 나타내었다. 어린이집교사의 경우에는 사회적 영역에서 가장 높은 만족도를, 신체적 영역에서 가장 낮은 만족도를 보여 근무 기관에 따라 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 유아교사의 일반적 배경에 따른 삶의 질의 차이 분석 결과, 근무기관 유형, 연령, 경력, 학력, 유아의 담당 수, 결혼여부 등에 따라 삶의 질 관련 일부 하위영역 간에 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. This study is intended to provide basic measurement data towards promoting the quality of life (QL) of early childhood teachers in childcare centers and kindergartens. To analyze their QL, the Korean version of the WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) was utilized. The study participants included 498 early childhood teachers working in Korea’s North Jeolla Province. Data analysis was performed to derive the mean, standard deviation, t values, and one-way ANOVA using SPSS 19.0. The results were as follows. First, the QL scores of early childhood teachers were found to be average. Among the four domains of the WHOQOL-BREF, the highest score for kindergarten teachers was in the physical domain, while the lowest was in overall quality of life and general health. The highest score for childcare teachers, on the other hand, was in the social domain, while the lowest was in the physical domain. Second, an analysis of QL differences according to individual background showed statistically significant differences between some QL-related sub-domains, including workplace type, age, career, academic background, number of children in their care, and marital status.

      • Activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway and neuroprotection of nigral dopaminergic neurons by a novel synthetic compound KMS99220

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The transcription factor Nrf2 is known to induce gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and proteasome subunits. Because both oxidative stress and protein aggregation have damaging effects on neurons, activation of the Nrf2 signaling should be beneficial against neurodegeneration. In this study, we report a novel synthetic morpholine-containing chalcone KMS99220 that confers neuroprotection. It showed high binding affinity to the Nrf2 inhibitory protein Keap-1 and increased nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and gene expression of the antioxidant enzymes heme oxygenase-1, NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase-1, and the catalytic and modifier subunits of glutamate-cysteine ligase in dopaminergic CATH.a cells. KMS99220 also increased expression of the proteasome subunits PSMB5, PSMB7, PSMB8 and PSMA1, and the respective chymotrypsin and trypsin-like proteasomal enzyme activities, and reduced α-synuclein aggregate in GFP-α-syn A53T-overexpressing cells. KMS99220 exhibited a favorable pharmacokinetic profile with excellent bioavailability and metabolic stability, did not interfere with activities of the cytochrome p450 isotypes, and showed no apparent in vivo toxicity when administered up to 2000 mg/kg. In 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-treated mice, oral administration of KMS99220 prevented degeneration of the nigral dopaminergic neurons, induced the Nrf2 target genes, and effectively prevented the associated motor deficits. These results suggest KMS99220 as a potential candidate for therapy against Parkinson's disease.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We synthesized a novel compound KMS99220 that activates the Nrf2 signaling pathway. </LI> <LI> KMS99220 elevates Nrf2-dependent gene expression of HO-1, NQO1 and GCLM/GCLC. </LI> <LI> It raises expression and activities of proteases and lowers α-synuclein aggregation. </LI> <LI> It prevents nigral dopaminergic neurodegeneration and motor deficits in MPTP mice. </LI> <LI> It exhibits favorable pharmacokinetics, bioavailability and metabolic stability. </LI> </UL> </P>
