A Vol.26 No.5A

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause serious problems in cable-stayed bridges. Externally attached dampers have been used to provide an effective means to suppress the vibration of relatively short stay-cables. For very long stay-cables, however, such damper systems are rendered ineffective, as the dampers need to be attached near the end of cables for aesthetic reasons. This paper investigates a new control system to mitigate the cable vibration. The proposed control system which consists of a laminated rubber bearing and an internal damper may be installed inside of the cable anchorage. A simple analytical model of the cable-damper system is developed first based on the taut string representation of the cable. The response of a cable with the proposed control system is obtained and then compared to those of the cable with and without an external passive damper. The proposed stay-cable vibration control system is shown to perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges for mitigation of rain-wind induced vibration of stay-cables.

A Vol.31 No.5A

This study introduces an elastic parabolic cable element for initial shaping analysis of cable-supported structures. First, an elastic catenary cable theory is shortly summarized by deriving the compatibility condition and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic catenary cable element. Next, the force-deformation relations and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic parabolic cable elements are derived and discussed under the assumption that sag configuration under self-weights is small. In addition the equivalent cable tension is defined in the chord-wise direction. Finally, to demonstrate the accuracy of the elastic parabolic cable element, nonlinear relationships of nominal cable tension-chord length and nominal cable tension-tangential stiffness for a single element are presented and compared with results using an elastic catenary cable theory as the slope is varied.

Cable vibration control with internal and external dampers: Theoretical analysis and field test validation

Fangdian Di,Limin Sun,Lin Chen 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.26 No.5

For vibration control of stay cables in cable-stayed bridges, viscous dampers are frequently used, and they are regularly installed between the cable and the bridge deck. In practice, neoprene rubber bushings (or of other types) are also widely installed inside the cable guide pipe, mainly for reducing the bending stresses of the cable near its anchorages. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect of the bushings on the performance of the external damper. Besides, for long cables, external dampers installed at a single position near a cable end can no longer provide enough damping due to the sag effect and the limited installation distance. It is thus of interest to improve cable damping by additionally installing dampers inside the guide pipe. This paper hence studies the combined effects of an external damper and an internal damper (which can also model the bushings) on a stay cable. The internal damper is assumed to be a High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper, and the external damper is considered to be a viscous damper with intrinsic stiffness, and the cable sag is also considered. Both the cases when the two dampers are installed close to one cable end and respectively close to the two cable ends are studied. Asymptotic design formulas are derived for both cases considering that the dampers are close to the cable ends. It is shown that when the two dampers are placed close to different cable ends, their combined damping effects are approximately the sum of their separate contributions, regardless of small cable sag and damper intrinsic stiffness. When the two dampers are installed close to the same end, maximum damping that can be achieved by the external damper is generally degraded, regardless of properties of the HDR damper. Field tests on an existing cable-stayed bridge have further validated the influence of the internal damper on the performance of the external damper. The results suggest that the HDR is optimally placed in the guide pipe of the cable-pylon anchorage when installing viscous dampers at one position is insufficient. When an HDR damper or the bushing has to be installed near the external damper, their combined damping effects need to be evaluated using the presented methods.

Disproportionate Collapse Analysis of Cable-stayed Steel Roofs for Cable Loss

        S. Gerasimidis,C.C. 2011 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.11 No.1

Disproportionate collapse has been identified lately as a real cause of failure for structural engineering projects. Rare and unexpected, the phenomenon of disproportionate collapse usually results to many fatalities and thus, its analysis and mitigation is deemed necessary. This work describes the analysis of a cable-stayed steel roof under the scenario of a cable loss. The event of a cable loss is assumed to be brittle, while relevant recent recommendations suggest the application of a scaled equivalent static force at the points of the anchorage of the cable but in the opposite direction of the original cable force. In this paper, three different conditions have been considered in order to study the effect of the cable loss into the overall structural response of a typical cable-stayed roof; the level of the equivalent nodal load in the opposite direction of the original cable force varies. The steel structure of the roof, in its complexity, closer to responding as a cable-stayed bridge rather than a steel roof provides a useful template for conclusions; several topics regarding disproportionate collapse and cable losses are discussed.

Structural behavior of the suspen-dome structures and the cable dome structures with sliding cable joints

2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.43 No.1

Sliding cable joints have been developed for the cable dome structures and the suspen-dome structures to reduce the cable pre-stressing loss and obtain a uniform inner force in each hoop cable. However, the relevant investigation is less addressed on the structural behavior of the cable dome structures and the suspen-dome structures with sliding cable joints due to the lack of analysis techniques. In this paper, a closed sliding polygonal cable element was established to analyze the structural behavior of the cable dome structures and the suspen-dome structures with sliding cable joints. The structural behaviors with sliding cable joints were obtained.

Vol.13 No.3

In this paper, two tests were performed using the commonly used HFIX(1.5SQ) cable for the purpose of analyzing the impact of a cable’s Cable Bend Radius and Turn on fire risk. In each test, 14A and 16A stationary electrical currents without a functioning molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) were applied respectively for 180 seconds, and then an infrared camera was used to verify the temperature characteristics and the ignition probability. The results of the tests showed that the Cable Bend Radius, within the scope of not causing physical damage to the copper wire or the cable sheath, did not have meaningful impact upon thermal accumulation. For the Turn however, there was a linear increase in the temperature of the cable even within the range of allowable current of the cable as the number of Turn increased, verifying the risk of fire from the cable sheath. Therefore, to minimize the risk of cable fires, the cable must be correctly used at all times and constant preventive actions through maintenance including regular inspection and repairs are needed.

Influence of lateral motion of cable stays on cable-stayed bridges

        Wang, P.H.,Liu, M.Y.,Huang, Y.T.,Lin, L.C. Techno-Press 2010 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.34 No.6

The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.

Cable was targeted for cable, which is a main material of cable-stayed bridges that have high frequency of use at home and abroad and many future construction plans. First of all, experiments were conducted on temperature loads that were permanently used due to changes in temperature of cables and changes in air temperature, taking into account changes in normal fat. The dynamic characteristics of cables were compared and analyzed by applying various systems to change dynamic characteristics by applying temperature change of cables. Comparing and analyzing the dynamic characteristics of cables, the acceleration, frequency and tension of cables due to temperature rise tended to decrease, the degree of influence of displacement of cables was analyzed, and the results of the mode characteristics of cables were analyzed. In particular, the correlation of cable acceleration, natural frequency, and tension due to changes in cable temperature showed that the cable tension is highly sensitive to acceleration and natural frequency.

A Vol.28 No.5A

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause the damages in the cable-stayed bridge due to very little inherent damping characteristics and low fundamental frequency. External Dampers attached to stay cables near anchorages have been shown to be effective means at short stay-cables. However, installation locations of external dampers are limited to a particular range due to aesthetic and practical reasons for very long stay-cables. A recent study by the authors showed that the stay-cable vibration system can perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges. This paper extends the previous study on the taut string representation of the cable by adding cable sag and inclination. The response of the proposed system compared to those of the cable with and without an external damper, and the movable anchorage system provides very effective mitigation of cable vibration. Cable damping ratio is seen to be remarkably reduced by movable anchorage system for a wide range of cable sag. This result shows that the sag effects of the proposed system should be considered.
