Asthma is considered a chronic inflammatory airway disease. Mounting evidence reports that patients with asthma are at significantly higher risk of developing communicable diseases such as invasive pneumococcal disease, Haemophilus influenza, varicella, measles, pertussis and tetanus. While impaired innate immunity may play a role in increased risk of developing these infections, suboptimal adaptive immune responses have also been reported to play a role in asthmatic subjects with regard to increased risk of infections. This review discusses the currently underrecognized immunological effect of asthma on antibody to vaccines and recommends that clinicians be aware of less optimal antibody production in response to vaccines in subjects with asthma. Amyloidosis is a heterogenous group of often fatal disorders characterized by extracellular deposition of a proteinaceous material with a unique fibrillar form in various tissues and organs. Presenting with severe hepatomegaly, a 46 year-old man who has suffered with rheumatoid arthritis lasting more than 12 years was confirmed to have secondary amyloidosis by liver biopsy. After treatment with methotrexate and low dose prednisolone, we have observed clinical improvement in which hepatomegaly was resolved remarkably. This is the first published case report of a patient with rhuematoid arthritis complicated by liver amyloidosis which partially regressed after treatment with methotrexate and prednisolone.

Asthma is traditionally regarded as a chronic airway disease, and recent literature proves its heterogeneity, based on distinctive clusters or phenotypes of asthma. In defining such asthma clusters, the nature of comorbidity among patients with asthma is poorly understood, by assuming no causal relationship between asthma and other comorbid conditions, including both communicable and noncommunicable diseases. However, emerging evidence suggests that the status of asthma significantly affects the increased susceptibility of the patient to both communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Specifically, the impact of asthma on susceptibility to noncommunicable diseases such as chronic systemic inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), may provide an important insight into asthma as a disease with systemic inflammatory features, a conceptual understanding between asthma and asthma-related comorbidity, and the potential implications on the therapeutic and preventive interventions for patients with asthma. This review discusses the currently under-recognized clinical and immunological phenotypes of asthma; specifically, a higher risk of developing a systemic inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis and their implications, on the conceptual understanding and management of asthma. Our discussion is divided into three parts: literature summary on the relationship between asthma and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis; potential mechanisms underlying the association; and implications on asthma management and research.

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>The present study evaluated the prognostic significance of apoptosis-related proteins p53, Bax and galectin-3 in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with surgical resection.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We investigated the expression of these proteins and their association with clinicopathologic characteristics including disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in 205 NSCLC patients who underwent surgical resection (Stage I, 97; II, 46; IIIA, 45; IIIB, 17) using immunohistochemistry. Eighty-eight patients (43%) received adjuvant treatment (chemotherapy: 8, radiotherapy: 24, both: 56).</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>High expressions of Bax, p53 and galectin-3 were observed in 48 (23%), 81 (40%) and 105 (51%) patients, respectively. Low expression of Bax was significantly associated with male gender, squamous cell histology and low expression of galectin-3. Five-year DFS and OS of total patients were 37 and 46%, respectively. High expressions of p53 and galectin-3 were not associated with poor DFS or OS, and no significant correlation existed between low expression of Bax and outcome of patients. However, in patients with non-squamous histology (108 patients), low expression of Bax was a significant independent predictor of poor DFS (<I>P</I> = 0.017) and OS (<I>P</I> = 0.037). In addition, in patients with Stage II or III disease, low expression of Bax significantly correlated with poor DFS (<I>P</I> = 0.004). It was also the most significant independent poor prognostic factor second only to a large primary tumor size in Stage II or III patients with non-squamous histology.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Low expression of Bax was significantly associated with poor prognosis in resected NSCLC patients with non-squamous histology.</P>

This study investigated the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between adenovirus 36 (Ad36) and obesity in 79 Korean adolescent boys over 1 year. We analyzed the changes in body composition and metabolic risk factors according to the presence of Ad36 antibodies. Ad36 antibodies in serum were detected using the constant virus-decreasing serum method. We found that the fat percentage and fasting insulin in the Ad36-seropositive group were greater than the Ad36-seronegative group. These results suggest that Ad36 infection is associated with an increase of adiposity, and the experience of Ad36 infection may affect the future fat gain of adolescents.
