The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of focus-on-form approach on learning connective ending '-느라고' of Korean language learners. Input enhancement and consciousness raising tasks were applied and compared as an effective way of this grammar instruction among various techniques of focus-on-form approach. The participants in the study are intermediate-level Korean language learners. They were divided into two groups, and teaching activities were provided undertaken based on two different methods. According to the results, significant differences were not found between the two methods, but the upper-level students had higher achievements than the lower-level students. Although no significant difference was found between the input enhancement and consciousness raising tasks, it was found that the focus-on-form approach can be recommended as a way to teach grammar effectively, especially it is effective for upper-level learners.
Towards a Strategic Approaches in Alternative Tests for Pesticide Safety

Pesticides have provided significant benefits including plant disease control and increased crop yields since people developed and utilized them. However, pesticide use is associated with many adverse effects, which necessitate precise toxicological tests and risk assessment. Most of these methods are based on animal studies, but considerations of animal welfare and ethics require the development of alternative methods for the evaluation of pesticide toxicity. Although the usage of laboratory animals is inevitable in scientific evaluation and alternative approaches have limitations in the whole coverage, continuous effort is necessary to minimize animal use and to develop reliable alternative tests for pesticide evaluation. This review discusses alternative approaches for pesticide toxicity tests and hazard evaluation that have been used in peer-reviewed reports and could be applied in future studies based on the critical animal research principles of reduction, replacement, and refinement.
Predictors of Suicide Attempts in Out of School Youths

본 연구는 학교 밖 청소년의 자살 시도 예측 변수를 조사하기 위해 학업중단청소년 패널조사 1차년도 조사자료를 사용한 2차 데이터 분석 연구이다. 자료 분석은 SPSS 26.0 통계 프로그램을 사용하여 수행되었다. 연구에 포함된 776명의 참가자 중 62명(8%)에서 학업중단 이후 자살 시도가 보고되었다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 학업중단 이전의 자살시도 경험(OR=10.66), 폭력피해 경험(OR=6.97), 음주(OR=3.73), 우울(OR=2.62), 부모애착(OR=0.47), 또래와의 관계(OR=0.63)가 학업 중단 이후 자살 시도의 유의한 예측인자였다. 따라서 학교 밖 청소년의 자살 시도를 예방하기 위해서는 학업 중단 전의 자살 시도 경험을 확인해야 한다. 또한 심리적 상황, 대인관계, 폭력경험 등을 고려한 융합적 자살예방 프로그램의 수립이 필요하다. This study is a secondary data analysis study using the 1st Panel Survey of School Dropouts in Korea for investigating predictors of suicide attempts in out-of-school youths (OSYs). Data analysis were performed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical program. Suicide attempts were reported in 62 (8%) of the 776 participants included in the study. Logistic regression analysis revealed that suicide attempts before school dropout (OR=10.66), experience of violence victimization (OR=6.97), alcohol consumption (OR=3.73), depression (OR=2.62), parental attachment (OR=0.47), peer relationships (OR=0.63) before school dropout were significant predictors of suicide attempts. Prevention of suicide attempts by OSYs should be preceded by confirmation of their experience in suicide attempts before school dropout. In addition, it is required to establish a suicide prevention program considering psychological situations, interpersonal relationships, and violence experiences.
Trifloxystrobin-induced mitophagy through mitochondrial damage in human skin keratinocytes

<P>Trifloxystrobin is a strobilurin class fungicide, the mode of action of which is to block the mitochondrial electron transport chain and inhibit energy production in fungi. Although adverse effects have been reported by occupational or environmental exposure of fungicides, the pathophysiological mechanism in human cells remains poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the impact of trifloxystrobin on exposed skin at the cellular organelle level using HaCaT, the human skin keratinocyte cell line. Cells were treated with trifloxystrobin for 48 hr and trifloxystrobin showed detrimental effects on mitochondria evidenced by altered mitochondrial membrane potential and morphology. To identify autophagic degradation of the damaged mitochondria, confocal imaging and Western blotting were performed. Trifloxystrobin induced autophagy-related proteins in HaCaT cells. The mitochondrial reactive oxygen species scavenger mitoTEMPO was applied to further explore the mechanism of trifloxystrobinmediated mitophagy in human skin cells. PINK1 and Parkin were overexpressed by trifloxystrobin, and mitoTEMPO alleviated the effects on mitophagy induction. Taken together, our findings indicated that mitochondrial damage and mitophagy may play a role in trifloxystrobin-induced toxicity in human keratinocytes and this could be suggested as a mechanism of cutaneous diseases developed by exposure.</P>
Robust lightweight fingerprint encryption using random block feedback

<P>Fingerprint encryption in embedded environments should satisfy both lightweightedness and secureness. Normally, the encryption scheme divides the 8-bit pixel images into bit planes and then performs full encryption for one bit plane, e.g. least significant bit plane, and simple operations for the remaining bit planes. Thus, the scheme performs better compared with the 8-bit full encryption, while the security is decreased since only one bit plane is fully encrypted. An innovative fingerprint encryption scheme is proposed which supports better security while maintaining the overall performance. The proposed scheme uses a bit plane encryption and a random block feedback. The encryption schemes are implemented and tested with 320 sample fingerprint images. The result shows that the scheme has superior aspects compared with the existing bit plane encryption and even with the naive full encryption.</P>

Mitochondrial dysfunction induced by callyspongiolide promotes autophagy-dependent cell death

Callyspongiolide is a marine macrolide known to induce caspaseindependent cancer cell death. While its toxic effects have been known, the mechanism leading to cell death is yet to be identified. We report that Callyspongiolide R form at C-21 (cally2R) causes mitochondrial dysfunction by inhibiting mitochondrial complex I or II, leading to a disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential and a deprivation of cellular energy. Subsequently, we observed, using electron microscopy, a drastic formation of autophagosome and mitophagy. Supporting these data, LC3, an autophagosome marker, was shown to co-localize with LAMP2, a lysosomal protein, showing autolysosome formation. RNA sequencing results indicated the induction of hypoxia and blocking of EGF-dependent pathways, which could be caused by induction of autophagy. Furthermore, mTOR and AKT pathways preventing autophagy were repressed while AMPK was upregulated, supporting autophagosome progress. Finally, the combination of cally2R with known anti-cancer drugs, such as gefitinib, sorafenib, and rapamycin, led to synergistic cell death, implicating potential therapeutic applications of callyspongiolide for future treatments.
