Multi-Detector Row Computed Tomographic Evaluation of a Rare Type of Complete Vascular Ring: Double Aortic Arch with Atretic Left Arch Distal to the Origin of Left Subclavian Artery

        Ying-Ying Hung,Yun-Ching Fu,Hao-Ji Wei,I-Chen Tsai,Clayton Chi-Chang Chen 대한영상의학회 2013 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.14 No.5

Double aortic arch with an atretic left arch distal to the origin of left subclavian artery was diagnosed with multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) in two children with dysphagia. This rare type of complete vascular ring is clinically important because it may be confused with right aortic arch in mirror imaging. Anatomic details of this rare type of complete vascular ring demonstrated on MDCT facilitated appropriate surgical treatment.

Traditional, complementary and integrative medicine for fatigue: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

        Chen, Xiao-ying,Lu, Chun-li,Wang, Qian-yun,Pan, Xing-ru,Zhang, Yang-yang,Wang, Jia-le,Liao, Jun-Ya,Hu, Nai-chong,Wang, Chen-yang,Duan, Bing-jie,Liu, Xue-han,Jin, Xin-yan,Jennifer Hunter,Jian-ping Liu 한국한의학연구원 2024 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.13 No.2

Background: Chronic fatigue is a predominant symptom of post COVID-19 condition, or long COVID. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) for fatigue. Methods: Ten English and Chinese language databases and grey literature were searched up to 12 April 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Cochrane “Risk of bias” (RoB) tool was applied. Evidence certainty was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Effect estimates were presented as risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Thirteen RCTs with 1632 participants were included. One RCT showed that Bufei Huoxue herbal capsules reduced fatigue (n=129, MD -14.90, 95%CI -24.53 to -5.27), one RCT reported that Ludangshen herbal liquid lowered fatigue (n=184, MD -1.90, 95%CI -2.38 to -1.42), and the other one RCT shown that fatigue disappearance rate was higher with Ludangshen herbal liquid (n=184, RR 4.19, 95%CI 2.06 to 8.53). Compared to traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation (TCM-rahab) alone, one RCT showed that fatigue symptoms were lower following Qingjin Yiqi granules plus TCM-rehab (n=388, MD -0.48, 95%CI -0.50 to -0.46). Due to concerns with RoB and/or imprecision, the certainty in this evidence was low to very low. No serious adverse events was reported. Conclusions: Limited evidence suggests that various TCIM interventions might reduce post COVID-19 fatigue. Larger, high quality RCTs of longer duration are required to confirm these preliminary findings. Protocol Registration: The protocol of this review has been registered at PROSPERO: CRD42022384136. Chen, Ying,Fan, Xue-Yun,Jin, Yu-Lan,Yao, San-Qiao,Yun, Xiang,Hua, Zheng-Bing,Shen, Fu-Hai Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: To explore the relationship between polymorphisms of interleukin17 (IL-17) gene(A-832G 7488A/G) and the susceptibility to silicosis, a risk factor for lung cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 113 silicosis patients and 116 workers without silicosis were enrolled in the case-control study. IL-17A A-832G and IL-17F 7488A/G polymorphisms were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The frequencies of AA,GG and AG of IL-17A A-832G locus in the case and control groups were 46.9%, 8.0%, 45.1%, and 49.2%, 7.6%, 43.2%, respectively, with no significant differences (p>0.05).The GG genotype in the IL-17F (7488A/G) locus was not found. The frequencies of AA and GA of IL-17F 7488A/G locus in the case and control groups were 84.1%, 15.9% and 66.4%, 33.6%, respectively (p<0.05). Analysis of combined effects showed that the individuals with GG+AG genotype of IL-17A and GG+GA genotype of IL-17F are protected against silicosis (OR=0.469). Conclusions: IL-17F 7488A/G is associated with susceptibility to silicosis, and G allele may have a protective effect. No relationship was found between IL-17A gene polymorphisms at A-832G and silicosis.

Feasibility of Using a One-temperature Model for Determining Plasma’s Temperature by Measuring Its Refractive Index

        Yun-yun Chen,Fen-ping Cui,Fang Gu,Ying-ying Zhang 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.64 No.11

In this paper, the feasibility of using a one-temperature model to determine plasma’s temperatureby measuring its refractive index is studied based on the consideration that many plasma flow fieldsare not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We compare the refractive indices between theone- and the two-temperature models of an arc plasma, in order to discuss the applicability ofthe one-temperature model in optical diagnosis. We found that the applicability is determined bythe pressure, the temperature ratio between electrons and heavy particles, the probe wavelength, and the chosen optical method’s refractive index measurement precision. Consequently, a commonmodel is deduced to describe the refractive index of plasma whether it be in LTE or not. In a word, this study is crucial to better apply optical methods based on measurements of the refractive indexto diagnose plasma flow fields.

The Optical Measurement and Quantitative Analysis of Algesia in Spodoptera litura Larva

        Ying-Yun Chen,Rong-Seng Chang,Mi-Yin Tsai,Der-Chin Chen 한국광학회 2015 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.19 No.2

Muscle vibration measurement has long been an unique scientific study, in general, and the directreaction of animals to feel pain (algesia), either from vascular or muscle contraction, is a complexperceptual experience. Thus this paper proposes a way to measure animal algesia quantitatively, bymeasuring the changes in muscle vibration due to a pinprick on the surface of the skin of a Spodopteralitura larva. Using the laser optical triangulation measurement principle, along with a CMOS image sensor, linear laser, software analysis, and other tools, we quantify the subtle object point displacement, with aprecision of up to 10 μm, for our chosen Spodoptera litura larva animal model, in which it is not easyto identify the tiny changes in muscle contraction dynamics with the naked eye. We inject differentconcentrations of formalin reagent (empty needle, 12% formalin, and 37% formalin) to obtain a varietyof different muscle vibration frequencies as the experimental results. Because of the high concentrationsof reagent applied, we see a high frequency shift of muscle vibration, which can be presented as painindices, so that the algesia can be quantified

Research on Subcutaneous Pulse Shape Measurement by Near-infrared Moiré Technique

        Ying-Yun Chen,Zhizhen Liu,Jian Du,Rong-Seng Chang 한국광학회 2015 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.19 No.2

A pulse is generated when the heart pumps blood into the arterial system. The heart pumps blood onlywhen it contracts, not when it relaxes; therefore, blood enters the arterial system in a cyclical form. Arterybeating is visible in some parts of the body surface, such as the radial artery of the wrist. This papermainly uses the feature in which near-infrared spectroscopy penetrates skin to construct a non-invasivemeasurement system that can measure small vibration in the subcutaneous tissue of the human body, andthen uses it for the pulse measurement. This measurement system uses the optical moiré principle, togetherwith the fringe displacement made by small vibration in the subcutaneous tissue, and an image analysisprogram to calculate the height variation from small vibrations in the subcutaneous tissue. It completesa measurement system that records height variation with time, and that together with a fast Fouriertransform (FFT) program, they can convert the pulse waveform generated by vibration (time-amplitude)to heartbeat frequency (frequency-amplitude). This is a new and non-invasive medical assistance systemfor measuring the pulse of the human body, with the advantages of being simple, fast, safe and objective

Anti-inflammatory effect of hispidin on LPS induced macrophage inflammation through MAPK and JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathways

        Han Ying-Hao,Chen Dong-Qin,Jin Mei-Hua,Jin Ying-Hua,Li Jing,Shen Gui-Nan,Li Wei-Long,Gong Yi-Xi,Mao Ying-Ying,Xie Dan-Ping,Lee Dong-Seok,Yu Li-Yun,Kim Sun-Uk,김지수,권태호,Cui Yu-Dong,Sun Hu-Nan 한국응용생명화학회 2020 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.63 No.3

Severe inflammatory reactions caused by macrophage activation can trigger a systemic immune response. In the present study, we observed the anti-inflammatory properties of hispidin on LPS induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Our results showed that hispidin treatment significantly reduced the production of cellular NO, IL-6 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) while has not inhibitory effect on TNF-α productions. Excitingly, hispidin treatment retains the phagocytosis ability of macrophages which enabling them to perform the function of removing foreign invaders. Signaling studies showed, hispidin treatment dramatic suppressed the LPS induced mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) and JAK/STAT activations. In conclusion, our findings suggest that hispidin may be a new therapeutic target for clinical treatment of macrophages-mediated inflammatory responses.

Chirality Switching in the Crystallization of 1-(4-Chlorophenyl)ethylamine with Binaphthoic Acid by Ketimine Formation

        Ying-Ji Jin,Yun Seo Choi,Qian Chen,Mukesh Eknath Shirbhate,Haofei Huang,김영미,김성진,전무진,Eon Cheol Koo,김관묵 대한화학회 2016 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.37 No.10

Axially chiral binaphthoic acid (BNA) was studied as a resolving agent for a stereoselective crystallization of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethylamine (CPEA). The diastereomeric pair of (R)-BNA/(S)-CPEA crystallizes in methylene chloride, on the other hand, the pair of (S)-BNA/(S)-CPEA crystallizes in acetone. The switch of the solubility of the diastereomeric pair is due to the imine formation with acetone. The very low solubility of the BNA/imine pair appears to be responsible for the fast and complete imine formation. The crystal structure of the BNA part in both crystals of the diastereomers maintains a same feature. Asymmetric chiral channels and pockets composed by intermolecular packing of BNA molecules appear in the crystal structures, and the robustness of them seem to contribute to the recognition of the chirality of CPEA with high selectivity.

OrMKK3 Influences Morphology and Grain Size in Rice

        Ying Hua Pan,Li Jun Gao,Yun Tao Liang,Yan Zhao,Hai Fu Liang,Wei Wei Chen,Xing Hai Yang,Dong Jin Qing,Ju Gao,Hao Wu,Juan Huang,Wei Yong Zhou,Cheng Cui Huang,Gao Xing Dai,Guo Fu Deng 한국식물학회 2023 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.66 No.3

Although morphology and grain size are important to rice growth and yield, the identity of abundant natural allelic variations that determine agronomically important differences in crops is unknown. Here, we characterized the function of mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 from Oryza officinalis Wall. ex Watt encoded by OrMKK3. Different alternative splicing variants occurred in OrMKK3. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)–OrMKK3 fusion proteins localized to the cell membrane and nuclei of rice protoplasts. Overexpression of OrMKK3 influenced the expression levels of the grain size-related genes SMG1, GW8, GL3, GW2, and DEP3. Phylogenetic analysis showed that OrMKK3 is well conserved in plants while showing large amounts of variation between indica, japonica, and wild rice. In addition, OrMKK3 slightly influenced brassinosteroid (BR) responses and the expression levels of BR-related genes. Our findings thus identify a new gene, OrMKK3, influencing morphology and grain size and that represents a possible link between mitogen-activated protein kinase and BR response pathways in grain growth.

      • Antitumor Constituents from Anthriscus Sylvestris (L.) Hoffm

        Chen, Hui,Jiang, He-Zhong,Li, Yong-Chao,Wei, Guo-Qing,Geng, Yun,Ma, Chao-Ying Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.6

Bioassay-guided chemical investigation of the roots of Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm. resulted in the isolation of nine compounds, whose structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. Compound 1 was isolated from this plant for the first time and compounds 3 and 9 were first found from this genus. Different polar fractions of A. sylvestris extract and compounds 1, 6-8 and 9 were evaluated for antitumor activities against HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma), MG-63 (human osteosarcoma cells), B16 (melanoma cells) and HeLa (human cervical carcinoma cells) lines by the MTT method. The petroleum ether fraction of A. sylvestris extract exhibited excellent inhibitory activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $18.3{\mu}g/ml$. Among the isolates from the petroleum ether fraction, compound 7 showed significant inhibition against the growth of the four tumor cells with $IC_{50}$ values ranging from $12.2-43.3{\mu}g/ml$.
