As the first step to study the fatigue crack propagation, the molecular simulations were performed to investigate theopening, propagation and closure behaviors of intragranular and intergranular cracks in nanocrystalline Ni under single-cyclemode I loading. The atomic crack angle was proposed to characterize the crack-tip blunting and sharpening quantitatively. There are obvious different mechanisms between intragranular and intergranular crack propagation. Intragranular crack propagationcould be induced by stacking faults and can change its direction very easily, but the intergranular crack perpendicularto the loading direction would propagate along the grain boundary and encounter strong resistance at the triple junction. New cracks could form in the grain boundaries ahead of the original crack. Different from the traditional understanding forintragranular and intergranular cracks, however, the dislocation density increases even in the unloading process and the cracktip is possibly sharpened temporarily during loading.

A Monascus pilosus MS-1 strain with high-yield monacolin K but no citrinin

Monacolin K (MK) produced by Monascus spp. is mostly used to regulate cholesterol level, while it can be contaminated by citrinin, a mycotoxin yielded by some Monascus strains. To develop production of citrinin-free MK, an M. sp. MS-1 strain, identified as M. pilosus by morphologies and internal transcribed spacer sequences analysis, was isolated from red fermented rice. After 14 days of fermentation, yields of citrinin-free MK could be up to 0.58 mg/mL and 16.45 mg/g in liquid- and solid-state fermentation products under optimal conditions, respectively. Further determination revealed that no citrinin biosynthesis related genes such as ctnA, pksCT, ctnE, and ctnR were detected. Thus, HPLC combined with citrinin-related gene analyses can be used for rapid screening of non-citrinin production Monascus strains.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A graph is s-<I>regular</I> if its automorphism group acts regularly on the set of its s-arcs. In this paper, we classify the s-regular elementary Abelian coverings of the three-dimensional hypercube for each s≥1 whose fibre-preserving automorphism subgroups act arc-transitively. This gives a new infinite family of cubic 1-regular graphs, in which the smallest one has order 19208. As an application of the classification, all cubic symmetric graphs of order 8p or 8<SUP>p2</SUP> are classified for each prime p, as a continuation of the first two authors’ work, in Y.-Q. Feng, J.H. Kwak [Cubic symmetric graphs of order a small number times a prime or a prime square (submitted for publication)] in which all cubic symmetric graphs of order 4p, 4<SUP>p2</SUP>, 6p or 6<SUP>p2</SUP> are classified and of Cheng and Oxley’s classification of symmetric graphs of order 2p, in Y. Eucommia ulmoides is a focus of considerable attention because it is used to produce gutta-percha latex and raw materials for traditional Chinese medicine. The species has also been widely planted for vegetable oil production due to the high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in the seeds. However, little was known about fatty acid biosynthesis in the seeds. Here, we present transcriptome analyses that identified genes related to the fatty acid biosynthesis pathways in the seeds collected 70 and 160 days after flowering (DAF) from two varieties: ‘Huazhong No. 6’ (ALA content of 38.7 %) and ‘Huazhong No. 10’ (ALA content of 67.6 %). De novo assembly generated 96,469 unigenes with an average length of 690 bp. Among them, 11,260 unigenes identified by functional annotation against the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database were mapped to 117 metabolic pathways. 65 unigenes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis include 5 coding for 3-oxoacyl-ACP reductase, 2 coding for b-hydroxyacyl-ACP dehydratase, 10 coding for b-ketoacyl-ACP synthase II, and 2 coding for enoyl-ACP reductase I. Expression of the nine differentially expressed unigenes coding for major enzymes in fatty acid biosynthesis was validated by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR) using RNA from six seed stages (70, 88, 106, 124, 142, and 160 DAF) in ‘Huazhong No. 10’. The qPCR analysis showed that expression of these 9 unigenes all changed significantly at 88 DAF. This study provides a large-scale transcriptome annotation of E. ulmoides, which is fundamental information for further characterizing gene functionals involved in the process of seed development.
Influence of Spatial Distribution of Pores on NMR Transverse Relaxation Time in Pebbly Sandstone

The relationship between transverse relaxation time (T₂) and pore size distribution is the basis of NMR applications for rocks. However, the equations for T₂ are not accurate enough in rocks with complicated pore structures. Taking pebbly sandstone from the northwestern Junggar Basin in China as an example, the aim of this study is to discover the spatial distribution of pores and its influence on T₂. Porosity, permeability, micro-images and T₂ distributions were acquired from rock samples, and pore structure parameters were obtained from binarized thin section images. The results show that as the grain size increases, the proportion of dissolution pores increases and the spatial distribution of pores changes from a random to a clustered pattern. The relaxation of a hydrogen atom takes longer and T₂ is higher in dissolution pores compared with those in intergranular pores. New equations for T₂ that consider the spatial distribution of pores are proposed.
