<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>High-voltage cathode materials have gained much attention as one of the promising electrode materials to increase power density of lithium ion batteries by raising the working voltage. However, the use of such high-voltage cathode materials is still challenging, because their working voltage is close to the electrochemical oxidation potential of organic electrolyte used in lithium ion batteries. In this work, we demonstrated that simultaneous fluorination of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) particles as well as conductive agent in the electrode could significantly improve the electrochemical stability of LNMO cathode. The resulting electrode showed better cycle performance both at room temperature and elevated temperature compared to both bare LNMO electrode and the electrode with only LNMO fluorinated. These results showed that direct fluorination of high voltage cathode can reduce the side reaction of high voltage cathode electrode with the electrolyte, thereby stabilizing the surface of carbon black as well as that of high voltage cathode material.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Simultaneous fluorination of LNMO and carbon black in the cathode was carried out. </LI> <LI> The electrodes showed improved cycle performance at elevated and room temperature. </LI> <LI> Simultaneous fluorination would be the effective way to reduce the side reaction. </LI> </UL> </P>

Aims: Previous reports demonstrated that carnitine restore mitochondrial and liver function in various liver diseases. We aimed to assess various metabolic profiles after 3 months carnitine-orotate complex (GodexⓇ) treatment in patients with metabolic disease. Methods: We reviewed the records of 544 outpatients (type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension) from 31 primary or secondary care clinics from January 2015 to May 2016 in Korea. The key inclusion criteria were such as following; i) participants who were prescribed antidiabetic, antihypertension, or lipid-lowering drugs, ii) elevated alanine aminotransferase activity more than 40 IU/L, iii) who were newly prescribed carnitine-orotate complex. Biochemical parameters (liver enzyme, glycated hemoglobin, lipid profile) as well as anthropometric markers observed for 3 months. Results: There was no significant weight change between before and after treatment with carnitine-orotate complex (71.55±12.19 kg vs. 71.1±11.8 kg, P=0.5367). After 3 months of combined treatment with carnitine-orotate complex, the rates of normalization of serum ALT and AST levels were 68.2 % and 63.2%, respectively. Mean change in serum ALT levels from before at 3 months was -44.07±36.15 IU/L (P<0.0001) while it was -33.28±39.46 IU/L in serum AST levels (P<0.0001). Carnitine-orotate complex showed improvement in HbA1c level with 0.74 % decrease (P<0.0001) in diabetes. Serum triglyceride level significantly decreased 54.22 mg/dl compare to baseline in dyslipidemic subjects (P<0.0001). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure also significantly decrease in hypertensive subjects (-6.84 mmHg vs. -3.86 mmHg, respectively, P<0.0001). Conclusions: Three months of treatment with carnitine-orotate complex effectively decreased liver enzyme in patients with various metabolic diseases.
Quasi-Continuous Operation of 1.55- μm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers by Wafer Fusion
Song, Dae-Sung,Song, Hyun-Woo,Kim, Chang-Kyu,Lee, Young-Hee,Kim, Jung-Su Optical Society of Korea 2001 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.5 No.3
Room temperature quasi-continuous operation is achieved near 1556 nm with threshold current as low as 2.2 mA from a 5.6-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ oxide-aperture vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. Wafer fusion techniques are employed to combine the GaAs/AlGaAs mirror and the InP-based InGaAs/InGaAsP active layer. In this structure, an $Al_x/O_y$/GaAs distributed bragg reflector and intra-cavity contacts are used to reduce free carrier absorption.

Ticks are vectors that cause disease by transmitting bacteria, viruses, and protozoa to humans or animals. The Asian longhorned tick Haemaphysalis longicornis, a vector of medical and veterinary importance, is widely distributed in the Korean peninsula and can transmit various pathogens including Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp., Francisella spp., Coxiella spp., and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTS virus). Despite the abundance and importance, studies on the microbiome of H. longicornis in Korea are limiting. Here we first report the microbiome diversity of H. longicornis in terms of region, stage, and sex. H. longicornis used in this study were collected from 16 different regions. The V3-V4 region was amplified and sequenced by MiSeq platform. The microbial diversity analysis was performed using Qiime2. A total of 1,754,418 non-chimeric reads were obtained from a total of 46 samples, and an average of 126 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and a total of 1,398 OTUs were identified. Our results were used for H. longicornis microbial community database construction for each region that enables to identify singularities in each region.

Purpose: Changes in the femoral posterior condylar offset (PCO), tibial posterior slope angle (PSA), and joint line height (JLH) after cruciateretaining total knee arthroplasty (CR-TKA) were evaluated to determine their influence on the flexion angle. Materials and Methods: A total of 125 CR-TKAs performed on 110 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Pre- and postoperative PCO, PSA, and JLH were compared using correlation analysis. Independent factors affecting the postoperative flexion angle of the knee were analyzed. Results: The PCO was 28.2±2.0 mm (range, 24.5 to 33.1 mm) preoperatively and 26.7±1.8 mm (range, 22.2 to 31.2 mm) postoperatively (r=0.807, p<0.001). The PSA was 10.4°±4.9° (range, 1.6° to 21.2°) preoperatively and decreased to 4.9°±2.0° (2.2° to 10.7°) postoperatively (r=-0.023, p=0.800). The JLH was 16.2±3.0 mm (range, 10.2 to 27.5 mm) preoperatively and 16.1±2.6 mm (range, 11.1 to 24.8 mm) postoperatively (r=0.505, p<0.001). None of the independent factors affected the flexion angle (p>0.291). Conclusions: Although the PCO and JLH did not change significantly after CR-TKA, the PSA decreased by 5.5° with a small range of variation. Restoration of the PCO and JLH could promote optimization of knee flexion in spite of the decreased PSA after CR-TKA.

Objective: Emergency physicians are constantly exposed to night shifts and stress due to the nature of their work, resulting in health problems such as substance abuse, depression, and suicidal ideation. To date, depression in Korean emergency physicians has never been investigated. The present study endeavors to identify the prevalence and factors related to depression in emergency physicians in Korea. Methods: The present study retrospectively analyzed data from the 2020 Korean Emergency Physician Survey. The prevalence of depression was evaluated using the PHQ-9 (Patient Healthcare Questionnaire-9). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors related to depression and other variables. Results: The overall response rate of the survey was 61.3% (1,307/2,138). A total of 1,102 respondents completed the PHQ-9 and were analyzed. The prevalence of depression was 27.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 27.8-33.6). Following factors were found to be associated with depression: military service as the type of position (odds ratio [OR], 0.316; 95% CI, 0.126-0.794), schedule satisfaction (OR, 0.523; 95% CI, 0.356-0.769), health perspective (OR, 0.408; 95% CI, 0.252-0.662), weekly exercise (OR, 0.879; 95% CI, 0.774-0.998), sleep quality (OR, 4.728; 95% CI, 3.329-6.715), regular diet (OR, 0.380; 95% CI, 0.239-0.605), nighttime snacking (OR, 1.607; 95% CI, 1.124-2.298), and job satisfaction (OR, 0.456; 95% CI, 0.305-0.682). Conclusion: More than a quarter of respondents had depression. Job satisfaction, schedule satisfaction, and a healthy lifestyle were negatively related to depression. However, poor sleep quality showed a significantly positive association, which suggests the necessity for a long-term follow-up.

Aldo-keto reductase family 1 B10 (AKR1B10) is a member of the NADPH-dependent aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily, and has been considered to be a potential cancer therapeutic target. Total extract from the bark of Rhus verniciflua (Toxico-dendron vernicifluum (Stokes)) showed AKR1B10 inhibitory activity. To identify the active compounds from R. verniciflua responsible for AKR1B10 inhibition, nine compounds were isolated via bioactivity-guided isolation and tested for their effects against recombinant human AKR1B10 (rhAKR1B10). Results showed that butein, isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction, was most able to inhibit rhAKR1B10. The inhibitory rate of butein against rhAKR1B10 was 42.86% at 1 μM with an IC50 value of 1.47 μM, and enzyme kinetic analysis revealed its inhibition mode to be uncompetitive.
