The purposes of this study were to prospectively evaluate the surgical otucome of the arthroscopic repair of the capsulolabral lesion using suture anchors in al large series of patients who were followed-up for mid-term periods. We evaluated 167 patients with traumatic recurrent anterior shoulder instability after an arthroscopic Bankart repair using suture anchors and nonabsorbable sutures. The mean age at the time of the operation was 25 years (15~46 years). There were 149 male and 18 female patients. Preoperatively and at the time of follow-up(mean, 44 months; range, 24~75 months), three objective outcome measurement tools(Rowe Score, University of California at Los Angeles Shoulder rating scale, and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score) and two subjective measurements(pain and function visual analogue scale) sere assessed. The recurrence rate, range-of-motion, and risk factor for postoperative recurrence were evaluated. All shoulder scores improved after surgery(t-test, p<0.05). According to the Rowe scale, One hundred and thirty patients(78%) showed excellent, 29(17%) good, 6(4%) fair, and 2(2%) poor scored. Overall, postoperative recurrence of the instability was 4%(1 dislocation, 2 subluxation, and 4 positive anterior apprehensions). Postoperative recurrence was related with the glenoid defect of greater than 30%(Gehan's test, p<0.0001). In patients with postoperative instability, the recurrent episode was less frequent and shoulder function was related with the activity were increased after the surgery(t-test, p<0.001). One hundred and fifty-two patients(91%) returned to more than 90%of previous activities. The mean loss of external rotation was 2.0±4.0℃. In contrast to the previous reports on the results of the arthroscopic repair, arthroscopic capsulolabral repair using suture anchors provided satisfactory outcomes in terms of the recurrence, activity, and range of motion.
Evaluation of p16INk4a, pRb, p53 and Ki-67 expression in cervical squamous neoplasia

The previous studies of p16INK4a, pRb, p53, and Ki- 67 expression suggested that these markers may be preferentially expressed in cervical neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to assess the expression and the clinical significance of p16INK4a, pRb, p53, and Ki-67 proteins in cervical lesions. We obtained 106 cases with various categories of cervical squamous mucosa, including squamous cell carcinoma (n=35), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) II/III (n=26), CIN I (n=10), squamous metaplasia (n=15), and normal squamous mucosa (n=20). Immunohistochemical staining was performed for p16INK4a, pRb, p53, and Ki-67 proteins in formalin-fixed and paraffinembedded tissue sections of the uterine cervix. Evaluation of immunohistochemical staining was based on the frequencies of expression and the mean immunoreactivity scores (IS) in each diagnostic category. p16INK4a positive sotaining was observed in 26 of 35 cases (74.3%) of squamous cell carcinoma, in 16 of 26 cases (61.5%) of CIN II/III, in six of 10 cases (60%) of CIN I, in nine of 15 cases (60%) of squamous metaplasia, and negative in normal squamous mucosa. pRb expression was detected in all diagnostic categories; however, the proportion of pRb positive cells was relatively decreased in CIN II/III (38.5%) and squamous cell carcinomas (51.4%), compared to normal squamous epithelium (90%) and squamous metaplasia (73.3%). No significant differences in expression of p53 were observed in any diagnostic categories. Ki-67 expression was increased in squamous cell carcinoma (37.1%), CIN II/ III (42.3%), and CIN I (40%), but negative in squamous metaplasia and normal mucosa. In 35 cases of squamous cell carcinomas, multivariate analysis revealed no differences in p16INK4a, pRb, p53, and Ki-67 expression according to the age of the patient, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage. In conclusion, the combined use of p16INK4a and Ki-67immunoreactivity could improve the diagnostic specificity of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix.
Development and Field Application of a Passive Sampler for Atmospheric Mercury

In this study, a passive sampler for gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) was developed and applied to field monitoring. Three Radiello® diffusive bodies with iodineimpregnated activated carbon (I-IAC) as a Hg adsorbent were placed in an opaque acrylic external shield with a stainless steel lid. The performance of the passive sampler was evaluated at seven monitoring sites in South Korea. Hg uptake mass by the passive sampler linearly increased as the deployment time increased up to four months. The reproducibility of the sampler uptake mass for the different deployment periods was also good, and the average relative standard deviation calculated for the three adsorbents in one passive sampler was 9%. Using the Hg concentration measured by an active sampler, an experimental sampling rate (SR) of 0.082 m3 day-1 was obtained. It was shown that the experimental SR was significantly affected by meteorological parameters, and a calibration equation was successfully derived based on wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity. With the calibrated SRs, there was a significant correlation between the active and passive Hg concentrations. When the passive samplers were deployed in an industrial district, the GEM concentration showed very large spatial variation, suggesting its potential for application in future field monitoring.
Nanog signaling in cancer promotes stem-like phenotype and immune evasion.

<P>Adaptation of tumor cells to the host is a major cause of cancer progression, failure of therapy, and ultimately death. Immune selection drives this adaptation in human cancer by enriching tumor cells with a cancer stem cell-like (CSC-like) phenotype that makes them resistant to CTL-mediated apoptosis; however, the mechanisms that mediate CSC maintenance and proliferation are largely unknown. Here, we report that CTL-mediated immune selection drives the evolution of tumor cells toward a CSC-like phenotype and that the CSC-like phenotype arises through the Akt signaling pathway via transcriptional induction of Tcl1a by Nanog. Furthermore, we found that hyperactivation of the Nanog/Tcl1a/Akt signaling axis was conserved across multiple types of human cancer. Inhibition of Nanog in a murine model of colon cancer rendered tumor cells susceptible to immune-mediated clearance and led to successful, long-term control of the disease. Our findings establish a firm link among immune selection, disease progression, and the development of a stem-like tumor phenotype in human cancer and implicate the Nanog/Tcl1a/Akt pathway as a central molecular target in this process.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Using first-principles calculations we developed, for the first time, atomistic-level kinetics model to identify a key descriptor controlling electrochemical behaviors of various rare-earth ions solvated in molten salt electrolyte depositing on a solid electrode. We identified that the thermodynamic adsorption energies of rare-earth elements in the metallic electrode have a universal relation with exchange current densities. Asian-lineage H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses have caused continuous outbreaks in poultry and wild birds. Development of rapid and accurate diagnostic methods is needed for preventing further spread of the virus and reducing the time required for eradication of the virus. We developed a low-density microarray for the rapid detection and identification of avian influenza virus subtypes H5, H7, and H9 and their pathotypes in a previous study. In the present study, we evaluated previously developed diagnostic microarray using avian influenza viruses isolated in Mongolia, including H5 HPAI viruses. All H5 HPAI viruses isolated in Mongolia were shown as H5-specific and highly pathogenic pattern in the microarray. H2, H3 and H12 viruses isolated in Mongolia used in this study did not show any H5, H7 and H9 patterns. These results indicated that this diagnostic microarray has enormous potential for the rapid subtyping and pathotyping of influenza viruses, including viruses isolated in Mongolia.

<P>Since severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronaviruses (CoVs) share similar characteristics with respect to clinical signs, etiology, and transmission, methods for a rapid and accurate differential diagnosis are important. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a duplex real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR method for the simultaneous detection of these viruses. Primers and probes that target the conserved spike S2 region of human SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and their related bat CoVs were designed. The results of real-time RT-PCR showed specific reactions for each virus with adequate detection limits of 50-100 copies/mL and 5-100 copies/mL using pUC57-SARS-pS2 (a template for SARS-CoV) and pGEM-MERS-S2 (a template for MERS-CoV), respectively. In addition, this real-time RT-PCR system was able to detect the target viruses SARS-like bat CoV and MERS-CoV in bat fecal samples and sputum of MERS patients, respectively. Therefore, this newly developed real-time RT-PCR method is expected to detect not only SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV in humans but also several bat CoVs that are closely related to these viruses in bats.</P>
Structure and Electrochemical Behavior of Aromatic Thiol Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111)

The surface structure and electrochemical behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by aromatic thiols on Au(111) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and cyclic voltammetry. Benzenethiol (BT) forms disordered phases on Au(111) which are composed of many bright domains, while benzyl mercaptan (BM), with a methylene unit between the aromatic group and sulfur atom, forms twodimensional ordered SAMs on Au(111). In addition, two phase-separated domains consisting of disordered and ordered phases were observed in binary SAMs formed from a 1 : 1 mixed ethanol solution of BT and BM. From STM and CV measurements, we found that the blocking efficiency of aromatic thiol SAMs coated on an Au(111) electrode for an electron transfer reaction decreases as the structural order of the SAMs increases. Molecular-scale STM and CV results obtained here will be very useful in designing functional SAMs for further applications, such as the improvement of corrosion passivation of Au(111) on an aromatic thiolmodified Au(111) surface.
