Case Report : Exaggeration of Wrinkles after Botulinum Toxin Injection for Forehead Horizontal Lines

There have been no long-term complications or life-threatening adverse effects related to botulinum toxin treatment for any cosmetic indications. Nevertheless, there are well-known, mild side effects of botulinum toxin treatment on the upper face, though most of them are self limited with time. However, excluding brow ptosis, reports about site specific side effects are few and anecdotal. We experienced cases of exaggeration of wrinkles after botulinum toxin injection for forehead horizontal lines, and report them here. In our cases, new appearance of a noticeable glabellar protrusion following botulinum toxin injection on the forehead was observed in 2 patients. Also, a new deep wrinkle on one side of the forehead just above the eyebrow appeared in another 2 patients. The exaggerated wrinkles nearly disappeared without treatment by week 4 in all subjects. These exaggerations of wrinkles may be caused by hyperactivity and overcompensation of untreated muscles. With the increasing availability of diverse botulinum toxin for cosmetic purposes, physicians and patients should be aware of this temporary change after therapeutic injections. We recommend explaining this possible effect prior to injection, for better understanding of treatment for cosmetic indications. (Ann Dermatol 23(2) 217∼221, 2011)

Ten compounds were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Acacia catechu (Fabaceae), and their structures were identified as nine flavonoids [(+)-catechin (1), (-)- epicatechin (2), (+)-afzelechin (3), (-)-epiafzelechin (4), (+)- mesquitol (5), kaempferol (6), quercetin (7), quercetin 3-methyl ether (8), and caryatin (9)] and an ellagic acid (10). The chemical structures of these compounds were identified on the basis of spectroscopic methods (mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance) and comparison with literature values. This is the first time that the isolation of caryatin (9) has been reported from Acacia genus.

Adalimumab, a recombinant human IgG monoclonal antibody, selectively blocks tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF- α) and has been successfully used in the treatment of immune-mediated diseases. In particular, its efficacy has been proven in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthritis, lymphoproliferative diseases and inflammatory bowel disease. Its use has also been studied for the treatment of psoriasis and yet, paradoxically, cases of new onset or exacerbation of psoriasis continue to increase in patients undergoing treatment with anti TNF-α agents. A 51-year-old woman had arthritis for a year and was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. After she had received adalimumab for psoriatic arthritis five times during one year, erythematous eruptions were found on her entire body. She then stopped adalimumab therapy for two months, although her skin lesions did not resolve. The patient was diagnosed with psoriasis through biopsy and began using cyclosporine, a topical steroid used for treatment of psoriasis. (Korean J Dermatol 2010;48(6):513∼516)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The liquid metal ion sources (LMIS) in focused ion beam (FIB) system have many advantages of high current density, high brightness and low ion energy spread. There are two electrodes being emitter and extractor for field ion emission in LMIS. But several LMIS have a new electrode called the suppressor. Characteristics of LMIS with a suppressor are investigated in terms of the electric field change due to the suppressor. The threshold and extinguishing voltages are investigated under the varying a suppressor voltage for a specified source voltage, and also current–voltage (<I>I</I>–<I>V</I>) characteristics have been observed in terms of the voltage difference between the source and extractor for the various suppressor voltages. It is found that the emission current decreases as the suppressor voltage increases since the increase in the suppressor voltage reduces the electric field. It is also noted that the threshold and extinguishing voltages are increased as the suppressor voltage increases.</P>

Previous studies on the liquid Gallium ion sources used an electro-chemically etched tungsten wire with a coil-type heater. Such a structure requires excessive power consumption in the course of heating the liquid metal. In this work, a new structure is proposed that replaces the coil-type heater. It uses a Gallium reservoir made of six pre-etched 250 μm tungsten wires that surround the needle electrode. Gallium loading at the reservoir is observed to be much more stable, resulting in an improved beam stability.
