Control of IPMC-based Artificial Muscle for Myoelectric Hand Prosthesis

This paper proposes an ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) based artificial muscle to be applicable to the Myoelectric hand prosthesis. The IPMC consists of a thin polymer membrane with metal electrodes plated chemically on both faces, and it is widely applying to the artificial muscle because it is driven by relatively low input voltage. The control commands for the IPMC-based artificial muscle is given by electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from human forearm. By an intended contraction of the human flexor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles, we investigated the actuation behavior of the IPMC-based artificial muscle. To obtain higher actuation force of the IPMC, the single layered as thick as $800[{\mu}m]$ or multi-layered IPMC of which each layer can be as thick as $178[{\mu}m]$ are prepared. As a result, the bending force was up to the maximum 12[gf] from 1[gf] by actuating the single layered IPMC with $178[{\mu}m]$, but the bending displacement was reduced to 6[mm] from 30[mm]. The experimental results using an implemented IPMC control system show a possibility and a usability of the bio-mimetic artificial muscle.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared the results of meta-analysis with and without adjustment for the healthy worker effect on the association between working in the semiconductor industry and cancer mortality. METHODS: Six studies that reported standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for cancers were selected for meta-analysis. Using a random-effects model, the SMR results from each study were combined for all cancers and leukemias to estimate the summary SMRs (95% confidence interval, CI). To adjust for the healthy worker effect, the relative standardized mortality ratio (rSMR=SMRx/SMRnot x) were calculated using observed and expected counts for the specific cause of interest (i.e., all cancers and leukemias) and the observed and expected counts for all other causes of mortality. Then, the rSMR results were combined to estimate the summary rSMRs (95% CIs). RESULTS: The SMRs for all causes of mortality among semiconductor industry workers ranged from 0.25 to 0.80, which reflects a significant healthy worker effect. A remarkable difference was found between the summary SMRs and the summary rSMRs. The summary SMR for all cancers was 0.70 (95% CI, 0.63 to 0.79) whereas the summary rSMR was 1.38 (95% CI, 1.20 to 1.59). The summary SMR for leukemia was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.72 to 1.07), and the summary rSMR was 1.88 (95% CI, 1.20 to 2.95). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that adjustment for the healthy worker effect (i.e., rSMR) may be useful in meta-analyses of cohort studies reporting SMRs.
Effect of Age at First Calving on Productive and Reproductive Performance in Dairy Cattle

This retrospective study evaluated the effect of age at first calving on the productive and reproductive performance in Holstein dairy cattle. Data were collected on 2,297 lactations from 19 dairy farms, including dates of birth, insemination, pregnancy, calving, and lactation and milk production (305-day milk yield at first lactation and lifetime milk yield). Lactation data were grouped based on age at first calving into the early (< 24 months, n = 414), moderate (24 ≤ and ≤ 28 months, n = 1,268), and late (> 28 months, n = 615) groups. The 305-day milk yield at first lactation was higher (p < 0.005) in the late group (8,461.9 kg) than in the early (8,130.8 kg) and moderate (8,261.9 kg) groups. Lifetime days in milk were shorter (p < 0.01) in the early group (1,045.7) than in the moderate (1,143.1) and late (1,110.7) groups, whereas the lifetime milk yield was higher (p < 0.05) in the moderate group (34,171.8 kg) than in the early group (31,791.6 kg). The second calving interval (days) differed (p < 0.0001) between the early (416.9), moderate (438.9), and late (455.3) groups. The culling rate at the first and second lactations tended to be higher (p = 0.08) in the early group (31.2%) than in the moderate group (26.0%), whereas it was intermediate in the late group (29.3%). In conclusion, dairy heifers aged 24-28 months at first calving showed a higher productive performance through an increased lifetime milk yield and a decreased culling rate.

Background Aims: Pseudomembranous colitis is one of the most common cause of iatrogenic infectious diarrhea. Apart from the known risk factors, 12 cases of uncommon chemotherapy agent use were focused on clinical course and differentiation with PMC by antibiotics. Methods: Retrospective study was carried out, from Jan, 2003 to Jul. 2007, on patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasm, followed by cancer chemotherapy, and then diagnosed on colonoscopy and CD Toxin PCR as PMC. Results: Average age of patients were 60 years, and male-to-female ratio was 8:4. Malignancies were of four stomach cancers, four colon cancers, three lung cancers and one pancreatic cancer. Medication included six cases of 5-FUs, four cases of platins, two cases of taxols, 2 cases of gemeitabine and a case each for etoposide, ifospamide, vinorelbine. Thus 5-FU was found out to be the most common inducing drug. Average duration of 12.2 days were taken from medication to symptom manifestation. All patients had watery diarrhea as their first symptom, and four cases of abdominal pain and two cases of fever were also observed. Eight cases were treated with metronidazole or vancomycin P.O for average of 14 days, one case with metronidazole and vancomycin combination medication, and three cases recovered spontaneously without antibiotics treatment. On comparison to common PMC, duration from beginning of treatment to symptom recovery was shorter(6.12 days vs. 6.60 days). Conclusions: Most common cause for post-chemotherapy PMC is 5-FU, but most other chemotherapy drugs are also inducible. PMC is developed mostly on first-time medication of chemotherapy drugs. There were no cases of recurrence or expiration. Symptom recovery after treatment was shorter in it`s reaction period than in post-antibiotic PMC. Many cases recovered spontaneously after drug termination. Thus early diagnosis and treatment of pseudo-membranous colitis is important on patients suspected with post-chemotherapy PMC.

Purpose: To assess bony trabecular changes potentially caused by loading stress around dental implants using fractal dimension analysis. Methods: Fractal dimensions were measured in 48 subjects by comparing radiographs taken immediately after prosthesis delivery with those taken 1 year after functional loading. Regions of interest were isolated, and fractal analysis was performed using the box-counting method with Image J 1.42 software. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze the difference in fractal dimension before and after implant loading. Results: The mean fractal dimension before loading ($1.4213{\pm}0.0525$) increased significantly to $1.4329{\pm}0.0479$ at 12 months after loading (P<0.05). Conclusions: Fractal dimension analysis might be helpful in detecting changes in peri-implant alveolar trabecular bone patterns in clinical situations.
