        이상설 : 한국 근대수학교육의 아버지

        본 논문은 한국수학사에서 연구와 정리가 취약한 시기인 근대수학의 도입기를 조사하면서, 그 근대수학의 도입기에서 만나게 되는 인물인 이상설(李相卨)에 대한 조명을 시도한다. 시대적 상황이 모든 분야의 침체기를 가져온 구한말 이상설은 근대수학에서 당대를 대표하는 높은 학식을 쌓고 뛰어난 재능을 보여주었다. 그간 이상설에 대해 '근대수학교육의 아버지'라는 평가가 없지 않았음에도 불구하고 낯설게 느껴진다면, 그것은 그가 독립운동가로만 강하게 각인된 탓일 것이다. 하지만 그는 19세기말 조선 근대수학의 첫 번째 교과서 편저자이자 수학교사이기도 했음을 새겨둘 필요가 있다. 대유학자이면서도 선구적으로 외국어와 서양과학 특히 근대 서양수학을 이해한 면모는 한국이 배출한 천재 중 하나라는 평가가 결코 과장이 아님을 보여준다. 이에 본 논문에서는 한국 근대수학교육에 커다란 기여를 한 인물인 이상설의 교육과 학문 및 실천업적을 조명한다. 보재 이상설이 1886년경에 쓴 책 <수리>와 최초로 수학과 과학을 관립교육기관의 교육과정에 편성한 과정, 최초의 근대수학교과서로 여겨지는 <산술신서>의 발간, 민족교육기관인 '서전서숙'의 설립 및 운영을 포함한 보재의 업적을 한국수학사 관점에서 조명한다. 또한 <산술신서>의 목차와 구체적인 내용 및 1901년에 출간된 <신정산술>의 내용을 소개하고, 지금까지 부정확하게 알려진 <수리>와 <산술신서>에 관한 몇 가지 역사적 사실을 발굴하여 재조명한다. Most who have heard of Sang-Seol Lee know him for his contribution to the Korean independence movement nearly a hundred years ago. This paper, however, will discuss Lee's other great contribution to his country; that of being "The father of modern mathematical education in Korea". Lee passed the rigorous government officer examination with the highest honor and became a teacher for the royal prince. Later he became the president of Sunkyunkwan, a national institute of higher learning since 1398, and eventually a well-known university bearing the same name. Lee was also a highly regarded Confucian scholar and well versed in foreign languages. He wanted Korea to become a modern country and felt that the areas of science and engineering were studies that needed improving in order to achieve modernization. While researching Western textbooks on the subjects he realized that Western mathematics would be especially important for Korea. With that, it became his mission to integrate Western mathematics into the Korean educational system. This paper will explain the importance of Sang-Seol Lee's contributions to mathematic education in Korea and how it helped Korea become the modern nation it is today.

        Anatomical and Functional Recovery of Intracapsular Fractures of the Mandibular Condyle: Analysis of 124 Cases after Closed Treatment

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of intracapsular fracture lines of the mandibular condyle on the anatomical and functional recovery after non-surgical closed treatment. Methods: Clinical and radiological follow-up of 124 patients with intracapsular fractures of the mandibular condyle was performed after closed treatment between 2005 and 2012. The intracapsular fractures were classified into three categories: type A (medial condylar pole fracture), type B (lateral condylar pole fracture with loss of vertical height) and type M (multiple fragments or comminuted fracture). Results: By radiological finding, fracture types B and M lost up to 24% vertical height of the mandibular condyle compared to the height on the opposite side. In Type M, moderate to severe dysfunction was observed in 33% of the cases. Bilateral fractures were significantly associated with the risk of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction in fracture types A and B. Bilateral fracture and TMJ dysfunction were not statistically significantly associated in type M fractures. Conclusion: Most of the mandibular intracapsular condylar fractures recovered acceptably after conservative non-surgical treatment with functional rehabilitation, even with some anatomical shortening of the condylar height. The poor functional recovery encountered in type M fractures, especially in cases with additional fracture sites and bilateral fractures, points up the limitation of closed treatment in such cases.

        The Effect of Information Access and Understanding on Disaster Response Actions among the Elderly at Home in Busan, Korea

        본 연구는 점차 심각해지는 재난의 위험으로부터 재난취약자인 노인의 피해를 경감하기 위한 목적으로 진행되었다. 구체적으로 노인이 재난 상황에서 적절한 행동을 통해 위험에 대처할 수 있도록 하는 것에 주목하였으며, 이러한 재난대처행동을 하는 데 있어 재난정보의 접근과 이해가 어떠한 영향을 주는지 실증적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 자료의 수집은 노인의 인구비율이 높은 부산광역시의 재가노인(만 65세 이상) 191명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며 분석은 SPSS 22.0 프로그램을 사용하여 연구 대상자의 인구사회학적특성과 주요변수 파악을 위해 빈도분석 및 기술통계, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 재난대처행동에 영향을 미치는 변인은 인적 자원 재난정보 접근(β=.205*)과 물적 자원 재난정보이해(β=.340**)로 나타났다. 이를 토대로 본 연구는 노인의 재난대처행동 향상을 위한 실천방안을 제시하였다. With an aim to reduce the damage to the elderly who are vulnerable to disasters, this study analyzed the impact of disaster information access and understanding on the elderly’s response actions in disaster situations. The data were collected by surveying 191 elderly people over 65 years old living in their homes in Busan Metropolitan City. The analysis was conducted by frequency analysis and descriptive statistics using the SPSS 22.0 program to identify the demographic characteristics and major variables of the subjects. A multiple regression analysis was also conducted to verify whether information access and understanding of the elderly affects their disaster response behavior. It is found that the elderly’s disaster response behavior is affected by their access to disaster information on human resources (β=.205) and their understanding of disaster information on material resources (β=.340). The results of this study suggested the implementation plan to improve the disaster coping capacity of the elderly.

        The Role of Teachers in the Pathway that Violent Parenting and Social Withdrawal Lead to Peer Violence Victimization

        본 연구는 아동을 대상으로 폭력적 양육방식이 사회적 위축을 매개로 또래폭력 피해로 이어지는 경로가 교사와의 관계에 따라 달라지는지 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이에 2010 한국아동⋅청소년패 널조사 초4패널의 3차년도 자료에 해당하는 초등학교 6학년 2,378명의 응답을 분석에 사용하였다. 주요 결과에 따르면, 먼저 폭력적으로 양육될수록 아동은 사회적으로 위축되는 경향이 있었으며, 이때 교사와의 관계에 따라 폭력적 양육이 사회적 위축에 미치는 영향이 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 폭력적으로 양육되거나 사회적으로 위축될수록 아동의 또래폭력으로부터 피해를 더 많이 당 하는 경향이 있었다. 단, 이때, 교사와의 관계에 따라 폭력적 양육과 또래폭력 피해 간의 관계는 달라지지 않았다. 셋째, 폭력적 양육이 아동의 사회적 위축을 매개로 또래폭력 피해에 영향을 미치는 경로에서 교사와의 관계는 조절된 매개효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 폭력적 양육 등의 위기 상황에 놓인 아동이 또래폭력과 같은 이후 피해로 이어지는 데 있어 교사의 중요성을 확인하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 실천적 논의를 하였다. Peer violence remains a significant social problem despite government measures to eradicate violence among children. This study aims to examine whether the relationship with teachers moderates the mediation of social withdrawal in the pathway from violent parenting to peer violence victimization. A total of 2,378 6th-grade students from the 3rd wave of the 4th-grade elementary school panel of the 2010 Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey was used. According to the findings, children exposed to more violent parenting tend to be socially withdrawn, but this influence differs according to their relationship with teachers. Second, violent parenting and social withdrawal had a significant impact on peer violence victimization, and in the model, the relationship with teachers did not moderate the association between violent parenting and peer violence victimization. Third, the relationship with teachers has a mediated moderation effect on the pathway from violent parenting to peer violence victimization through social withdrawal. These findings prove critically significant for teachers involved with children in at-risk situations. Practical discussions are presented.

        Safety evaluation of atmospheric pressure plasma jets in in vitro and in vivo experiments

        Purpose: The atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) has been introduced as an effective disinfection method for titanium surfaces due to their massive radical generation at low temperatures. Helium (He) has been widely applied as a discharge gas in APPJ due to its bactericidal effects and was proven to be effective in our previous study. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and effects of He-APPJ application at both the cell and tissue levels. Methods: Cellular-level responses were examined using human gingival fibroblasts and osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 cells). He-APPJ was administered to the cells in the experimental group, while the control group received only He-gas treatment. Immediate cell responses and recovery after He-APPJ treatment were examined in both cell groups. The effect of He-APPJ on osteogenic differentiation was evaluated via an alkaline phosphatase activity assay. In vivo, He-APPJ treatment was administered to rat calvarial bone and the adjacent periosteum, and samples were harvested for histological examination. Results: He-APPJ treatment for 5 minutes induced irreversible effects in both human gingival fibroblasts and osteoblasts in vitro. Immediate cell detachment of human gingival fibroblasts and osteoblasts was shown regardless of treatment time. However, the detached areas in the groups treated for 1 or 3 minutes were completely repopulated within 7 days. Alkaline phosphatase activity was not influenced by 1 or 3 minutes of plasma treatment, but was significantly lower in the 5 minute-treated group (P=0.002). In vivo, He-APPJ treatment was administered to rat calvaria and periosteum for 1 or 3 minutes. No pathogenic changes occurred at 7 days after He-APPJ treatment in the He-APPJ-treated group compared to the control group (He gas only). Conclusions: Direct He-APPJ treatment for up to 3 minutes showed no harmful effects at either the cell or tissue level.

      • Optimal Design Strategy for Improved Operation of IPM BLDC Motors With Low-Resolution Hall Sensors

        <P>This study proposes an interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless dc (BLDC) motor design strategy that utilizes BLDC control based on Hall sensor signals. The magnetic flux of IPM motors varies according to the rotor position and abnormal Hall sensor problems are related to magnetic flux. To find the cause of the abnormality in the Hall sensors, an analysis of the magnetic flux density at the Hall sensor position by finite element analysis is conducted. In addition, an IPM model with a notch structure is proposed to solve abnormal Hall sensor problems and its magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model is derived. Based on the MEC model, an optimal rotor design method is proposed and the final model is derived. However, the Hall sensor signal achieved from the optimal rotor is not perfect. To improve the accuracy of the BLDC motor control, a rotor position estimation method is proposed. Finally, experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed IPM-type BLDC motor and the Hall sensor compensation method.</P>

        Characterization of the surface immobilized synthetic heparin binding domain derived from human fibroblast growth factor-2 and its effect on osteoblast differentiation

        <P>Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 regulates a variety of cellular functions, such as proliferation and differentiation, by binding to cell surface FGF receptors (FGFRs) in the presence of heparin proteoglycans. FGF-2 is known as a heparin-binding growth factor, but the localization of the heparin binding site has not been fully investigated until now. We used two potential heparin binding domains of FGF-2, the residues 105–111 (F105, YKRSRYT) and 119–135 (F119, KRTGQYKLGSKTGPGQK). Peptides could be stably immobilized onto the surface of tissue culture plates. Using solid phase binding assays, we demonstrated that both peptides had higher binding affinity toward heparin compared with nonbinding control sequence. The biological significance of these sites was tested by cell attachment and osteoblast differentiation studies. Cell attachment to the peptides F105 and F119 increased in a dose-dependent manner. Heparin and heparinase treatments decreased cell adhesion to both F105 and F119. This demonstrates that both F105 and F119 interact with cell-surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans, suggesting that FGF-2 has two heparin binding sites. In addition, osteoblast differentiation, confirmed by ALPase activity and mineralization, was increased by surface immobilized peptide F105 and F119. Taken together, these heparin binding peptides could be applied as biological agents enhancing osteoblast differentiation as well as surface modification tools in the tissue regeneration area, especially for bone regeneration. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
