Since the long-term exposure of mutans streptococci to xylitol is known to select for xylitol-resistant(X^(R)) natural mutants, the occurrence and survival of such X^(R) strains were performed in batch culture methods. The aim of the study was to compare the differentiation and quantification of mRNA expression of the gtf genes of X^(R) and X^(S) mutans streptococci. Using a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, the expression of each gtf was determined. In X^(R) strains, the relative levels of transcription of gtfB and gtfC were decreased while that of gtfD was increased, suggesting the presence of independent promoters. It also suggested that mutation related to production of glucosyltransferase occurred under the exposure of xylitol could explain the caries-preventive mechanisms of xylitol. 자일리톨에 장기간 노출된 mutans streptococci는 자일리톨에 내성이 발현되어 자일리톨 내성균주가 생성된다고 알려져 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 mutans streptococci에서 자일리톨 내성균주와 감성균주의 gtf 유전자 발현량을 각각의 유전자별로 정량적으로 분석하고 비교하는 것이다. 실시간 역전사 중합효소연쇄반응법을 이용하여 각각의 gtf 발현을 조사한 결과 gtfD는 증가한 반면. gtfB와 gtfC는 감소하였는데 이는 각 유전자의 독립된 조절기전이 존재함을 보여주는 것이다. 또한 자일리톨에 노출된 mutans streptococci에서의 glucosyltransferase와 연관된 유전자변형이 자일리톨의 치아우식증 예방효과의 작용기전 중 하나임을 알 수 있었다.
논에서 우분액비 시용이 총체보리 및 이탈리안 라이그라스의 생산성과 사료가치 및 환경오염에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 논에서 조사료 생산을 위한 작부형태별 우분액비의 시용효과를 규명하기 위하여 총체 벼 재배 후 우분액비 시용에 따른 총체보리 및 IRG의 생산성, 사료가치, 토양성분 및 용탈수중의 무기물 농도를 조사하였다. 본 연구는 2006년 5월부터 2009년 4월까지 3년 동안 전라북도 김제군 백산면 시험포장에서 완전임의배치 3반복으로 수행되었다. 총체보리의 2년간 평균수량은 7,520 kg/ha, 그리고 IRG는 평균 10,320 kg/ha으로 IRG가 총체보리 보다 현저하게 높은 수량을 보였다 (p<0.05). 이탈리안 라이그라스는 1번초가 2번초 보다 약 2배 이상의 수량을 보였다. IRG의 조단백질 함량은 총체보리보다 높았고 NDF, ADF 및 TDN 함량은 작물간에 큰 차이는 보이지 않았다. 경작형태별 우분액비 시용에 따른 토양내 pH, $P_2O_5$, T-N, OM 농도는 시험전에 비해 시험종료 후에 현저하게 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다 (p<0.05). 경작형태별 우분액비 시용에 따른 토양내 Ca, Na, Mg 및 K 농도는 시험전에 비해 시험종료 후에 현저하게 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다 (P<0.05). 경작형태별 우분액비 시용에 따른 용탈수중 $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P, Cl, Ca, K, Mg, Na의 농도는 경작형태에 따른 확실한 차이를 보여주지 않았다. 따라서 논에서 우분액비를 이용하여 동계작물을 재배할 경우에는 수량도 중요하지만 환경적인 부분도 고려하여 우분액비를 이용해야 한다. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cattle slurry on productivity of whole crop barley and Italian ryegrass and environmental pollution in paddy land. Cropping systems used in this study were consisted of two designs, such as whole crop barley applied with cattle slurry (WCB) and Italian ryegrass applied with cattle slurry (IRG). The field experiments were conducted on the clay loam at Backsanmyun, Kimje, Chunlabukdo province in Korea for three years (May 2006 to Apr. 2009). This study was arranged in completely randomized design with three replicates. The yields of WCB and IRG were 7,520 kg/ha and 10,320 kg/ha, respectively. The yields of IRG significantly increased as compared with that of WCB (p<0.05). The yield of Italian ryegrass in 1st cutting time was about 2-fold higher than that of 2nd cutting time. The contents of crude protein of IRG were higher than that of WCB. However, the contents of NDF, ADF and TDN were no difference between WCB and IRG treatments. The pH, and contents of T-N, $P_2O_5$ and organic matter (OM) in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment increased as compared with those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). After the end of experiment, the concentrations of CEC (Ca, Na, Mg and K) in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). The concentrations of $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P, Cl, Ca, K, Mg and Na in leaching water in paddy land cultivated with WCB and IRG were no difference between WCB and IRG treatments.
Primary Thoracic Sarcoma in Anterior Mediastinum

Most common anterior mediastinal mass is thymoma, lymphoma and teratoma. Sarcomas are rare connective tissue malignant neoplasm which can be affected various locations, most frequently occur in the extremities. In fact, primary mediastinal sarco-mas are extremely uncommon, less than 2% of all soft tissue sarcoma cases. The majority of primary thoracic sarcomas are originated from chest wall, pleural spaces and nerve sheath. Therefore, the primary thoracic sarcomas involved in the lung parenchyma are rarer with poor information regarding the proper management and its outcomes. Herein, we report a rare and interesting case of primary thoracic high-grade sarcoma occupying anterior mediastinum and left lower lobe of the lung of a 35-years-old man, with reviewing the previous reports and literatures.

This paper addresses the analytical modeling and dynamic response of the advanced composite rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating viscoelastic material. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and coriolis force fields. The dual technology including structural tailoring and passive damping technology is implemented in order to enhance the vibrational characteristics of the blade. Whereas structural tailoring methodology uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive material technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material (VEM) embedded into the host structure. The VEM layer damping treatment is modeled by using the Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method, which is employed to account for the frequency-dependent characteristics of the VEM. The case of VEM spread over the entire span of the structure is considered. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergistic implications of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on the dynamic response of a rotating thin-walled b ε am exposed to external time-dependent excitations.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been regarded as a curative treatment for early gastric cancer (EGC) in indicated cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nationwide long-term clinical outcomes of ESD for EGC in Korea. Methods: A prospective multicenter cohort study was performed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of ESD for EGC within pre-defined indications at 12 institutes in Korea. The cases that met the expanded criteria upon pathological review after ESD were followed for 5 years. The primary outcome was 5-year disease specific free survival. Results: Six hundred ninety-seven patients with 722 EGCs treated with ESD were prospectively enrolled and followed for 5 years. Complete resection was achieved in 81.3% of the cases, and curative resection was achieved in 86.1%. During the 5-year follow-up, the overall survival rate was 96.6%, and the disease specific free survival rate was 90.6%. Local recurrence developed in 0.9%, and metachronous tumor development occurred in 7.8%; both conditions were treated by endoscopic or surgical treatment. Distant metastasis developed in 0.5% during follow-up. Conclusions: ESD showed excellent long-term clinical outcomes and can be accepted as a curative treatment for patients with EGC who meet the expanded criteria in final pathology studies. Stochastic characteristics for the vortical structure of a 5-MW wind turbine wake

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we analyze the near-wake characteristics of a 5-MW single wind turbine using a large-eddy simulation with the actuator line method. It is observed that stable helical structures of wake had breaking process due to flow instability with high-frequency turbulence in the analysis of turbulence energy spectra and auto-covariance. For vortical structure detection, the swirling strength criterion showed good performance when describing the tip vortices and their various streaklines. In the stable region, the stable helical structure of the tip vortices was observed with little wake recovery and flow instability. However, in the unstable region, the tip vortices had various streakline advection patterns such as horizontal, upward, and downward. In the statistical analysis of the flow acceleration, the distribution and magnitude of the acceleration in the stable and unstable regions were compared in terms of the probability density function, root mean square, and kurtosis. At the hub height and at the opposite blade tips in the stable region, the kurtosis of the acceleration was approximately 20 and 40, respectively. At the height wherein the wake recovery was dominant in the unstable region, the value of the kurtosis was 67.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We propose the stable wake region and the unstable wake region based on wake structure change and temporal velocity deficit change. </LI> <LI> Turbulent characteristics and statistical properties of the vortex structure are analysed in a wake region of a wind turbine. </LI> <LI> High-resolution vortical structure of wind turbine wake and its advection patterns are observed clearly. </LI> <LI> Decay pattern of turbulence energy is obtained at different locations. </LI> </UL> </P>
