Selective COX (cyclooxygenase)-2 inhibitors including celecoxib have been shown to induce apoptosis and cell cycle changes in various tumor cells. New inhibitors are recently being developed as chemomodulating agents. We evaluated celecoxib and screened 150 synthetic compounds for anti-proliferative activities in vitro. Effects of celecoxib on COX activity, cell growth, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis induction were determined in A549 COX-2 overexpressing human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. The COX inhibition of celecoxib increased with concentration up to 82% at 1μM after 24 hr exposure. Forty μM and 50μM of celecoxib induce G_1 arrest, and TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells, respectively. Among 150 compounds, several compounds were selected for having greater COX-2 inhibitory activity and higher selectivity than celecoxib with growth inhibitory activity. Celecoxib showed concentration-dependent COX inhibitory activity, and ability to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human NSCLC cells in vitro. Among synthetic analogues screened, several compounds showed promising in vitro activity as COX-2 inhibitory anticancer agents, which warrant further evaluation in vitro and in vivo.

A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer is currently ongoing in Korea. Patients with cT1N0M0-cT2aN0M0 (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 6th edition) distal gastric cancer were randomized to receive either laparoscopic or open distal gastrectomy. For surgical quality control, the surgeons participating in this trial had to have performed at least 50 cases each of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy and open distal gastrectomy and their institutions should have performed more than 80 cases each of both procedures each year. Fifteen surgeons from 12 institutions recruited 1,415 patients. The primary endpoint is overall survival. The secondary endpoints are disease-free survival, morbidity, mortality, quality of life, inflammatory and immune responses, and cost-effectiveness (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT00452751).
Application of ASTER to Tidal Flat Study

Effectiveness of EOS AM-1 ASTER is being tested for coastal applications. Here we test and present the guidelines on application of ASTER to the studies of tidal flat. The objectives of this study are: i) to select an optimal ASTER band for extracting accurate waterline; ii) to calculate the correlation coefficients(CC's) between ASTER data and field data including grain size arid soil moisture contents(SMC) for sediment type classification. The reflectance of each band varies greatly with soil moisture contents and remaining water in sediment structures such as sand ripple and mud patch. To select the optimal band for tidal flat, we have compared waterline extracted by three ASTER bands with in-situ measurements and concluded that VNIR band 3 was the most favorable especially at an ebb tide. Classification of sand and mud by remote sensing is not straightforward in tidal flat. However, this is very important for studies on coastal sedimentation processes arid geomorphologic changes. CC's between ASTER SWIR band 7 and the volume percentage of sand size are 0.27($gt; 0.125 mm), 0.78($gt; 0.25 mm) and 0.68($gt; 0.5 mm), respectively. CC's between soil moisture contents and ASTER data are lower than those of grain size. The results demonstrate that ASTER is useful and valuable for waterline extraction and sediment type discrimination.

The objective of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of various SAR speckle reduction methods for multisource land-cover classification by backpropagation neural network, especially over the coastal region. The land-cover classification using neural network has an advantage over conventional statistical approaches in that it is distribution-free and no prior knowledge of the statistical distributions of the classes is needed. The goal of multisource land-cover classification acquired by different sensors is to reduce the classification error, and consequently SAR can be utilized an complementary tool to optical sensors. SAR speckle is, however, an serious limiting factor when it is exploited for land-cover classification. In order to reduce this problem, we test various speckle methods Including Frost, Median, Kuan and EPOS. Interpreting the weights about training pixel samples, the $quot;Importance Value$quot; of each SAIL images that reduced speckle can be estimated based on its contribution to the classification. In this study, the $quot;Importance Value$quot; is used as a criterion of the effectiveness.

The phenethyl ester of caffeic acid (CAPE), an active component of honeybee propolis extract, is shown to inhibit cancer growth previously. However, studies on human ovarian cancer are largely obscure. This study evaluated the effects of CAPE as a potential anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic agent in the human ovarian cancer line, OVCAR-3. CAPE treated OVCAR-3 cells showed inhibition of cell viability and proliferation in a dose-dependent manner by WST-1 assay, LDH assay and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation assay. Furthermore, CAPE-mediated OVCAR-3 cell growth inhibition was associated with apoptotic changes as evident by cell cycle arrest and accumulation of cells in the apoptotic phase and DNA fragmentation. Taken together, CAPE inhibits cell proliferation via DNA synthesis reduction and induces apoptotic cell death via DNA damage, thus elucidating a novel, plausible mechanism of CAPE anti-tumorigenic property in OVCAR-3 cells.

곰소만 조간대 퇴적물의 Landsat ETM+ 자료 특성

이 연구에서는 곰소만 조간대에서 현장 시료채취와 동시에 얻어진 Landsat ETM+ 자료를 이용하여 조간대 환경요인들이 ETM+에 의해 관측된 반사도와 어떤 관계를 가지고 있는 지 밝히고, 광학위성영상을 이용한 조간대 표층퇴적물의 분류의 적용 가능한 기준입도를 제시하고자 하였다. 일반적인 퇴적학적 분류 기준이 되는 4φ 입도를 기준으로 했을 때 입도와 영상의 반사도 간의 상관관계는 매우 낮은 것으로 나타났으나. 2φ 이상의 입자를 기준으로 하였을 때는 상부조간대의 천주변에 작은 입자로 구성된 지역의 자료들을 제외하면 ETM+ 밴드 4번과 0.699의 높은 상관계수를 보인다. 즉, 입도 2φ를 곰소만 조간대에서의 광학위성 자료에 의한 표층퇴적물 분류를 위한 기준입도로 사용하는 것이 타당하다. 입도와 함수율은 비교적 높은 음의 상관관계를 보이며 특히 입도 2φ 기준과는 -0.811로서 뚜렷하게 음의 상관관계를 보인다. 위성자료의 Factor analysis 결과는 지형요소에 의해 크게 영향을 받는 독일의 조간대와는 다른 특성을 보이며, 이는 곰소만의 경우는 입자가 세립하여 지형보다는 함수율에 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 결국 조간대 원격탐사에서는 입도뿐만 아니라 함수율과 지형 등의 환경요소가 함께 고려하여야만 한다. A field survey and Landsat ETM+ image acquisition carried out simultaneously. Using these data, we attempted to establish relationships between tidal flat environmental factors and reflectance observed by ETM+, and to set up a new critical grain size useful for optical remote sensing. Although the grain size of 4φ has been conventionally used as a critical size by sedimentologists, the correlation with optical reflectance was very low. Instead, the grain size of 2φ showed a relatively high correlation coefficient, 0.699, with ETM+ band 4, except near tidal channels in upper tidal flat. We concluded that the grain size of 2φ would be better to use for a critical grain size in Gomso Bay. The grain size also correlated well with moisture content having a correlation coefficient of -0.811 when the 2φ criterion was used. The results of factor analysis showed moisture content was more important parameter than topographic relief, and they were different from German tidal flats in which topographic relief was the prior factor. This can be explained by finer grain composition of the Gomso bay tidal flat. In short, moisture content and topography as well as grain size should be considered in tidal flat remote sensing.
