<P>In this work, the aerodynamic performance of beetle wing in free-forward flight was explored by a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) simulation with measured wing kinematics. It is shown from the CFD results that twist and camber variation, which represent the wing flexibility, are most important when determining the aerodynamic performance. Twisting wing significantly increased the mean lift and camber variation enhanced the mean thrust while the required power was lower than the case when neither was considered. Thus, in a comparison of the power economy among rigid, twisting and flexible models, the flexible model showed the best performance. When the positive effect of wing interaction was added to that of wing flexibility, we found that the elytron created enough lift to support its weight, and the total lift (48.4 mN) generated from the simulation exceeded the gravity force of the beetle (47.5 mN) during forward flight.</P>

In this study a novel Ag-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst was synthesized and appliedas high efficientmaterial under solarlight towardsemerging antibiotic pollutantin hospital wastewater. Thetetracycline (TC) was chosen as a target pollutant and the content of Ag doping at 3 mmol revealed thehighest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TC (96.8%) after 120 min under solar light irradiation. Thephotoluminescence and UV–vis analysis confirmed the enhancement of charge separation and transfer inthe graphitic carbon structure after Ag-doping. The removal efficiency of TC using g-C3N4 and Ag-doped g-C3N4 (AgCN) underdark conditions was only 25.6 and 31.8%, respectively. While under solarlight conditions,the removal efficiency of TC increased to 68.3 and 96.8% for g-C3N4 and AgCN, respectively. The reusabilityprocess showed that AgCN displayed extremely high stability after 6 cycles without significant drop inantibiotic degradation efficiency. The application of AgCN was tested for treatment of TC from hospitalwastewater and it showed high removal efficiency of 89.6% within 120 min reaction time. In addition, theintermediatesgeneratedandreductionof total organiccarbon(TOC)duringthephotocatalyticreactionweredetected to support information of possible TC removal mechanism.

A combination of freeze-dried powder of disproportionatingenzyme (D-enzyme)-containing potatotuber and b-amylase-containing ramie leaf was used toimprove the gluten-free (GF) bread, and its physicochemicalproperties were characterized. The presence of D-enzymeand b amylase in the potato tuber and ramie leaf wasconfirmed. Sixty five percent of partially gelatinized riceflour and 20% corn starch was combined with 10% freezedriedpotato tuber and 1% ramie leaf powder, and baked. The specific volume increased by 23% compared to thecontrol with improved internal characteristics. Textureprofile analysis revealed that retrogradation of the breadwas retarded when stored for 90 h at 4 C. The breadcrumb amylose content was reduced from 14 to 9% andamylopectin branch chain-length distribution was rearranged,whereby the proportions of the branch chains withDegree of polymerization (DP)\9 and DP[19decreased. The results suggest that D-enzyme and bamylasecooperatively altered amylose/amylopectin ratioand amylopectin structure.

This study investigates the impact of heuristic factors on customers’ perception of information credibility of influencers on YouTube channels, and the association between customers’ perception of information credibility and brand attitude, brand credibility, and purchase intention of cosmetic products in Vietnam. A quantitative approach is employed, with a survey of 270 females who are frequent viewers of beauty content on YouTube channels. The data reliability and validity go through various statistical tests including exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Also, structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to test the hypotheses. The results reveal that there is a positive association between heuristic factors and the perception of information credibility. This perception of information credibility also influences positively on customers’ attitudes toward the brand and brand credibility. Purchase intention is also found to be positively associated with the two latter variables. The study’s main findings not only offer advice to practitioners on how to choose the right product endorsers and advertising platforms, but they also offer novel insight from the Vietnamese context that could help to extend the heuristic-systematic model and customers’ buy intention behavior.

<P>DNA shuffling was used to improve the thermostability of maltogenic amylase from <I>Bacillus thermoalkalophilus</I> ET2. Two highly thermostable mutants, III-1 and III-2, were generated after three rounds of shuffling and recombination of mutations. Their optimal reaction temperatures were all 80 °C, which was 10 °C higher than that of the wild-type. The mutant enzyme III-1 carried seven mutations: N147D, F195L, N263S, D311G, A344V, F397S, and N508D. The half-life of III-1 was about 20 times greater than that of the wild-type at 78 °C. The mutant enzyme III-2 carried M375T in addition to the mutations in III-1, which was responsible for the decrease in specific activity. The half-life of III-2 was 568 min while that of the wild-type was <1 min at 80 °C. The melting temperatures of III-1 and III-2, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry, increased by 6.1 °C and 11.4 °C, respectively. Hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, proper packing, and deamidation were predicted as the mechanisms for the enhancement of thermostability in the enzymes with the mutations.</P>
Control of morphology and Orientation of Electrochemically Grown ZnO Nanorods

We report the direct electrochemical deposition of ZnO nanorods on an indium tin oxide substrate. Themorphology and orientation of the grown ZnO nanorods were investigated as functions of the currentdensity. It is likely that the concentrations of OH- and Zn2+ ions, which could be controlled by varying thecurrent density, determine the shape and alignment of the ZnO nanorods. The nanorods were tilted, hexagonal,and prismatic at a low current density (0.1 mA/cm2) and vertically aligned and obelisk-shaped at highcurrent densities (greater than 0.6 mA/cm2). By using the low and high current densities sequentially in atwo-step growth process, vertically aligned, hexagonal, and prismatic ZnO nanorods could be grownsuccessfully. The underlying mechanism responsible for the growth of the ZnO nanorods is also discussed.
Molecular Structure of Sorghum and Waxy Sorghum Starches

Amylose contents and amylopectin chain architecture of sorghum and waxy sorghum starches were determined and compared with those of other common cereal and tuber starches. Also, in vitro digestibility of sorghum starch was estimated using a novel methodology. The absolute amylose content of sorghum starch was similar to that of corn and wheat starches. The side chain length distribution patterns for sorghum and waxy sorghum amylopectin were very similar to those of corn and waxy corn, respectively. The kcat/Km values for sorghum and potato amylopectin did not show a significant difference. The kinetic parameters could be used as novel indicators for starch digestibility.
Presence of β-Amylase in Ramie Leaf and its Anti-staling Effect on Rice Cake

Presence of β-amylase in ramie leaf and its anti-staling effect on starch-based foods were assessed. The ammonium sulfate fractionate (80% saturation) of the ramie leaf extracts showed a β-amylase activity, giving maltose (Glc2) as a major product, exclusively, when incubating with maltopentaose (Glc5) or soluble starch at 45oC, pH 6.0. The starch-based food product (rice cake) prepared with freeze-dried ramie leaf enzyme revealed that the linear maltooligosaccharides ranging from Glc2 to Glc6 significantly increased and the shorter branch chains (DP<15) of amylopectin increased whereas the longer branch chains (DP>16) decreased in the product. These results demonstrated that maltosyl residue was released from the non-reducing end of the longer branch chains of amylopectin by β-amylase. The ramie leaf-treatment sample significantly reduced the retrogradation rate during 48 h storage at 4℃. As an alternative plant-origin enzyme, the ramie leaf β-amylase has potential for a novel anti-staling additive.
