<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ether-free poly(<I>p</I>-phenylene)-based anion exchange membrane materials with outstanding vanadium ion blocking properties are reported. The synthesized ionomers with a rigid backbone structure show small dimensional variations despite the high ion exchange capacities. Among the synthesized membranes, the QPPP-2 membrane with ion exchange capacity of 2.1 meq·g−1 exhibits high anion (OH−, SO4 2−, and Cl−) conductivity. The QPPP-2 membrane shows an extremely low diffusion coefficient (2.12 × 10−9 cm2 min−1) for VO2+, which is much lower than that of Nafion 115 (2.88 × 10−6 cm2 min−1), indicating the vanadium ion blocking property of QPPP-2. Moreover, the chemical and operational stabilities of the membranes are investigated <I>via</I> ex situ soaking tests in 0.1 M VO2 + solution and in situ operation tests for 100 cycles, respectively. The vanadium redox flow battery single cell assembled with the QPPP-2 membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 99%, voltage efficiency of 87%, and energy efficiency of 86% during 100 cycles at 80 mA cm−2. IgG4-related systemic diseases are characterized by a diffuse or mass forming inflammatory reaction rich in lymphocytes and IgG4-positive plasma cells (lymphoplasmacytic infiltration), fibrosclerosis of variable organs and obliterative phlebitis. They usually involve various organs including the pancreas, bile duct, gallbladder, salivary gland, retroperitoneum, kidney, lung, and prostate. However, most of them are accompanied by autoimmune pancreatitis, and good response to steroid treatment is one of the hallmarks of this disease. We report a case of an 67-year-old man with IgG4 associated sclerosing cholangitis, who was diagnosed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and successfully treated with steroid therapy. This study aimed at optimizing the manufacturing conditions of a milk beverage supplemented with coffee, and monitoring its physicochemical and sensory properties during storage. Raw milk, skim milk powder, coffee extract, and emulsifiers were used to manufacture the beverage. Two sucrose fatty acid esters, F110 and F160, were identified as suitable emulsifiers. The optimum conditions for the beverage manufacture, which can satisfy two conditions at the same time, determined by response surface methodology (RSM), were 5,000 rpm primary homogenization speed and 0.207% sucrose fatty acid emulsifier addition. The particle size and zeta-potential of the beverage under the optimum condition were 190.1 nm and - 25.94 ±0.06 mV, respectively. In comparison study between F110 added group (GF110) and F160 added group (GF160) during storage, all samples maintained its pH around 6.6 to 6.7, and there was no significant difference (p
Molecular Characterization of Two Strains of Porcine Group C Rotavirus
Sung-Geun Lee,Soo-Hyun Youn,Mi-Hwa Oh,Ok-Jae Rhee,오상석,백순영 한국미생물학회 2011 The journal of microbiology Vol.49 No.6
Group C rotaviruses are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans and animals. Fecal samples were collected from a porcine herd in July, 2009. Group C rotavirus RNA was detected using RT-PCR for the VP6 gene. The identified strain was further characterized by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the partial VP4, and complete VP6 and VP7 gene sequences. The partial VP4 and complete VP6 gene sequences of the CUK-5 strain were most closely related to those of the CUK-6 strain of group C rotaviruses. Phylogenetic analysis of the VP7 gene of the 2 strains (CUK-5 and CUK-6) and reference strains of group G rotavirus by the neighbor-joining method also confirmed that CUK-5 and CUK-6 belonged to type G5 and G1 strains, respectively. This study provides useful data for the prediction of newly appearing variants of porcine group C rotaviruses in neighboring countries through comparisons with GCRVs and fundamental research for vaccine development.

The mutant enzymes of N-carbamyl-D-amino acid amidohydrolase (N-carbamylase) from Agrobacterium radiobacter NRRL B11291, showing a negligible activity, were selected from the library generated by random mutagenesis. From the sequence analysis, these mutants were found to contain the amino acids substitutions at Cysl72, Glu47, and Glu146. Previously, Cys 172 was reported to be necessary for the enzyme catalysis. The chemical modification of the N-carbamylase by carboxyl group specific chemical reagent, 1ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), resulted in a loss of activity. The replacement of glutamic acids with glutamines by site-directed mutagenesis led to aggregation of the enzymes. Mutant enzymes fused with maltose binding protein (MBP) were expressed in soluble form, but were inactive. These results indicate that two glutamic acid residues play an important role in structure and function of the N-carbamylase. Multiple sequence alignment of the related enzymes revealed that Glu47 and Glu146 are rigidly conserved, which suggests that these residues are crucial for the structure and function of the functionally related C-N hydrolases.
Antiviral Activity of Lactobacillus spp. and Polysaccharide
Oh, Mi-Hwa,Lee, Sung-Geun,Paik, Soon-Young 대한미생물학회 2010 Journal of Bacteriology and Virology Vol.40 No.4
Lactobacillus species have been widely used in both human and animals to prevent or treat gastrointestinal disorders. Recently, it was reported that Lactobacillus spp. inhibited infections by respiratory and gastroenteric viruses; however, its mechanism is not clear. Lactobacillus spp. play direct and indirect roles in the inhibitory effects of viral replication. 1) In vitro study: Highest protection effects were showed with the known probiotics L. rhamnosus GG (LGG) and L. casei Shirota against both rotavirus (RV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV). 2) In vivo study: L. acidophilus had significant immunopotentiating effects, and was therefore recommended for use as a safe oral adjuvant for rotavirus vaccines in pigs. Oral administration of lactobacilli, such as LGG and L. gasseri, might protect a host animal from influenza virus (IFV) infection. Polysaccharides are regarded to be potentially useful and biologically active as an ingredient for pharmaceutical uses due to a variety of biological activities. Especially, sulphated polysaccharides exhibit broad-spectrum antiviral activity against enveloped viruses in vitro. With respect to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), its in vitro antiviral activity is, specifically, the inhibition of virus-cell attachment, the first step in the infection process. Recently, it was reported that sulphated polysaccharides exhibited antiviral activity against HBV, HCMV, HSV and IFV. In conclusion, Lactobacillus spp. and polysaccharides with antiviral activity against diverse viruses are potential candidates as ingredients for probiotics and medicine candidate for the prevention and treatment of viral infections in animals and humans.
