Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation includes induction of inflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-8 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which are mediated by oxidant-sensitive transcription factor NF-kB. High levels of lipid peroxide (LPO) and increased activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), a biomarker of neutrophil infiltration, are observed in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Panax ginseng Meyer, a Korean herb medicine, is widely used in Asian countries for its biological activities including anti-inflammatory efficacy. The present study aims to investigate whether Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) inhibits H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation in Mongolian gerbils. One wk after intragastric inoculation with H. pylori, Mongolian gerbils were fed with either the control diet or the diet containing RGE (200 mg RGE/gerbil) for 6 wk. The following were determined in gastric mucosa: the number of viable H. pylori in stomach; MPO activity; LPO level; mRNA and protein levels of keratinocyte chemoattractant factor (KC, a rodent IL-8 homolog), IL-1b, and iNOS; protein level of phospho-IkBa (which reflects the activation of NF-kB); and histology. As a result, RGE suppressed H. pylori-induced mRNA and protein levels of KC, IL-1b, and iNOS in gastric mucosa. RGE also inhibited H. pylori-induced phosphorylation of IkBa and increases in LPO level and MPO activity of gastric mucosa. RGE did not affect viable H. pylori colonization in the stomach, but improved the histological grade of infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, intestinal metaplasia, and hyperplasia. In conclusion, RGE inhibits H. pyloriinduced gastric inflammation by suppressing induction of inflammatory mediators (KC, IL-1b, iNOS), MPO activity, and LPO level in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa.

Energetic thermoplastic elastomers (ETPEs) based on glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and carboxylated GA copolymers [GAP-ETPE and poly(GA-carboxylate)-ETPEs] were synthesized using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL), 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD), and soft segment oligomers such as GAP and poly(GA-carboxylate). The synthesized GAP-ETPE and poly(GA-carboxylate)-ETPEs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), universal testing machine (UTM), calorimetry and sensitivity towards friction and impact. DSC and TGA results showed that the introduction of carboxylate group in GAP helped to have better thermal properties. Glass transition temperatures of poly(GA-carboxylate)-ETPEs decreased from -31 ℃ to -33 ℃ compared to that of GAP-ETPE (-29 ℃). The first thermal decomposition temperature in poly(GA<sub>0.8</sub>-octanoate<sub>0.2</sub>)-ETPE (242 ℃) increased in comparison to that of GAP-ETPE (227 ℃). Furthermore, from calorimetry data, poly(GA-carboxylate)-ETPEs exhibited negative formation enthalpies (-6.94 and -7.21 kJ/g) and higher heats of combustion (46713 and 46587 kJ/mol) compared to that of GAP-ETPE (42,262 kJ/mol). Overall, poly(GA-carboxylate)-ETPEs could be good candidates for a polymeric binder in solid propellant due to better energetic, mechanical and thermal properties in comparison to those of GAP-ETPE. Such properties are beneficial to application and processing of ETPE.

<P>Single-crystalline rock-salt PbS nanowires (NWs) were synthesized using three different routes; the solvothermal, chemical vapor transport, and gas-phase substitution reaction of pregrown CdS NWs. They were uniformly grown with the [100] or [110], [112] direction in a controlled manner. In the solvothermal growth, the oriented attachment of the octylamine (OA) ligands enables the NWs to be produced with a controlled morphology and growth direction. As the concentration of OA increases, the growth direction evolves from the [100] to the higher surface-energy [110] and [112] directions under the more thermodynamically controlled growth conditions. In the synthesis involving chemical vapor transport and the substitution reaction, the use of a lower growth temperature causes the higher surface-energy growth direction to change from [100] to [110]. The high-resolution X-ray diffraction pattern and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that a thinner oxide-layer was produced on the surface of the PbS NWs by the substitution reaction. We fabricated field effect transistors using single PbS NW, which showed intrinsic <I>p-</I>type semiconductor characteristics for all three routes. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate clinical manifestations and survival rate according to endometriosis in Korean women with endometrial cancer using the nationwide cohort study. Methods: We selected 11,497 women newly diagnosed with endometrial cancer between 2008 and 2016 from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service databases. Women with endometrial cancer were defined as women with five or more diagnostic codes for endometrial cancer and no diagnostic code for any other cancer. Endometriosis was defined as presence of a diagnostic N80X code with associated procedures that included fulguration, ovarian cystectomy, adnexectomy, and hysterectomy within 60 days before or after an initial diagnostic code. Results: The data from 2,142 women (18.6%) with endometriosis and 9,355 women (81.4%) without endometriosis were extracted for analysis. Age at diagnosis of endometrial cancer was lower in women with endometriosis compared to those without endometriosis (years, 52.3±8.9 vs 54.6±9.8, P < 0.001). Compared with women without endometriosis, frequency of those with endometriosis were higher between 30 and 49 years (37.4% vs 28.3%) and lower between 60 and 79 years (18.3% vs 28.8%). Frequencies of type 2 diabetes were not different between the groups. Adjuvant radiation therapy after surgery was performed in less frequency in women with endometriosis compared to those without endometriosis (20% vs 23.4%, P < 0.001). However, rate of adjuvant chemotherapy was not different between the groups. Moreover, overall survivals were not different between the groups. Conclusion: Women with endometriosis occur endometrial cancer in relatively younger age. Endometriosis is not associated with survival of endometrial cancer

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe form of childhood epilepsy that is defined by generalized multiple type seizures, slowness of intellectual growth, and a specific EEG disturbance. Children affected might previously have infantile spasms or underlying brain disorder but etiology can be idiopathic. LGS seizures are often treatment resistant and the long term prognosis is poor. A 14-year-3-month old, 20.5 kg girl with LGS was scheduled for dental treatment under general anesthesia. The patient presented with multiple caries and heavy calculus. General anesthesia was induced and maintained with inhalation agent, Sevoflurane. And caries treatment, scaling, subgingival curretage were performed. LGS patients usually have poor oral hygiene due to mental retardation and have high risk of seizure during dental treatment. In dental treatment under general anesthesia for LGS, it must be considered of seizure control during peri-operative period. Also periodic recall check, instruction of oral hygiene must be performed.
