<P>In light field microscopy (LFM), the F-number of the micro lens array (MLA) should be matched with the image-side F-number of the objective lens to utilize full resolution of an image sensor. We propose a new F-number matching method that can be applied to multiple objective lenses by using an elastic MLA. We fabricate an elastic MLA with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a micro contact printing method and address the strain for the F-number variation. The strain response is analyzed, and the LFM system with the elastic MLA is demonstrated. Our proposed system can increase the F-number up to 27.3% and can be applied to multiple objective lenses. Automated Evaluation of Upper-Limb Motor Function Impairment Using Fugl-Meyer Assessment

<P>The Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) is the most popular instrument for evaluating upper extremity motor function in stroke patients. However, it is a labor-intensive and time-consuming method. This paper proposes a novel automated FMA system to overcome these limitations of the FMA. For automation, we used Kinect v2 and force sensing resistor sensors owing to their convenient installation as compared with body-worn sensors. Based on the linguistic guideline of the FMA, a rule-based binary logic classification algorithm was developed to assign FMA scores using the extracted features obtained from the sensors. The algorithm is appropriate for clinical use, because it is not based on machine learning, which requires additional learning processes with a large amount of clinical data. The proposed system was able to automate 79% of the FMA tests because of optimized sensor selection and the classification algorithm. In clinical trials conducted with nine stroke patients, the proposed system exhibited high scoring accuracy (92%) and time efficiency (85% reduction in clinicians’ required time).</P>

<P>This letter reports the fabrication of PbZr<SUB>x</SUB>Ti<SUB>1-x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> (PZT) thin-film capacitors on flexible plastic substrates. The PZT film was formed on a wafer using a sol-gel method and transferred to a thin plastic substrate using an elastomeric stamp. The PZT film on the plastic substrate showed a well-saturated hysteresis loop with a <I>P</I><SUB>r</SUB> of ~ 20μC/cm<SUP>2</SUP> and a <I>V</I><SUB>c</SUB> of ~1.1 V at a supplied voltage of 3 V, which are similar to those observed for PZT films on rigid wafers, as well as stable operation under an 8-mm bending radius. These characteristics suggest promising applications in flexible electronic systems.</P>
The Role of Auditory Perceptual Simulation in L2 Syntactic Processing

Auditory perceptual simulation (APS) reading is a virtual auditory representation of other speakers reading out a text. A previous L1 study showed that native speakers of English using APS reading read faster and more accurately. This study investigated whether using a similar paradigm can enhance L2 learners’ weak syntactic processing with more salient prosodic information. In eye-tracking experiments, L2 Korean learners of English, with or without APS-manipulation, read experimental sentences that employed the plausibility effect, such as The cat that the mouse chased was fast. The plausibility effect would occur when the participants properly established the structural relation and disappear when they overcame the difficulty with accurate syntactic interpretations. The results demonstrated that the APS-reading group showed larger plausibility effect at the critical region during the initial processing, but smaller plausibility effect during the late processing. The APS group detected the implausibility of the sentence earlier than the control group and had less difficulty accurately parsing the structure. This finding suggests that APS reading can improve L2 learners’ syntactic processing, as it does in L1 processing, by facilitating their prosodic representations.

<P>In three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D-IC) systems that use through-silicon via (TSV) technology, a significant design consideration is the coupling noise to or from a TSV. It is important to estimate the TSV noise transfer function and manage the noise-tolerance budget in the design of a reliable 3D-IC system. In this paper, a TSV noise coupling model is proposed based on a three-dimensional transmission line matrix method (3D-TLM). Using the proposed TSV noise coupling model, the noise transfer functions from TSV to TSV and TSV to the active circuit can be precisely estimated in complicated 3D structures, including TSVs, active circuits, and shielding structures such as guard rings. To validate the proposed model, a test vehicle was fabricated using the Hynix via-last TSV process. The proposed model was successfully verified by frequency- and time-domain measurements. Additionally, a noise isolation technique in 3D-IC using a guard ring structure is proposed. The proposed noise isolation technique was also experimentally demonstrated; it provided -17 dB and -10dB of noise isolation between the TSV and an active circuit at 100 MHz and 1 GHz, respectively.</P>
Single-molecule views of MutS on mismatched DNA

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Base-pair mismatches that occur during DNA replication or recombination can reduce genetic stability or conversely increase genetic diversity. The genetics and biophysical mechanism of mismatch repair (MMR) has been extensively studied since its discovery nearly 50 years ago. MMR is a strand-specific excision-resynthesis reaction that is initiated by MutS homolog (MSH) binding to the mismatched nucleotides. The MSH mismatch-binding signal is then transmitted to the immediate downstream MutL homolog (MLH/PMS) MMR components and ultimately to a distant strand scission site where excision begins. The mechanism of signal transmission has been controversial for decades. We have utilized single molecule Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (smFRET), Fluorescence Tracking (smFT) and Polarization Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (smP-TIRF) to examine the interactions and dynamic behaviors of single <I>Thermus aquaticus</I> MutS (TaqMutS) particles on mismatched DNA. We determined that TaqMutS forms an incipient clamp to search for a mismatch in ∼1s intervals by 1-dimensional (1D) thermal fluctuation-driven rotational diffusion while in continuous contact with the helical duplex DNA. When MutS encounters a mismatch it lingers for ∼3s to exchange bound ADP for ATP (ADP→ATP exchange). ATP binding by TaqMutS induces an extremely stable clamp conformation (∼10min) that slides off the mismatch and moves along the adjacent duplex DNA driven simply by 1D thermal diffusion. The ATP-bound sliding clamps rotate freely while in discontinuous contact with the DNA. The visualization of a train of MSH proteins suggests that dissociation of ATP-bound sliding clamps from the mismatch permits multiple mismatch-dependent loading events. These direct observations have provided critical clues into understanding the molecular mechanism of MSH proteins during MMR.</P>
