Objective: To investigate whether the expression of serum soluble neural cell adhesion molecule (sNCAM) is associated with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in hepatocelular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Materials and Methods: The Oncomine Cancer Microarray database was used to determine the clinical relevance of NCAM expression in different kinds of human cancers. Sera from 75 HCC cases enrolled in this study were assessed for expression of sNCAM by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Dependent on the Oncomine Cancer Microarray database analysis, NCAM was down regulated in 10 different kinds of cancer, like bladder cancer, brain and central nervous system cancer, while up-regulated in lung cancer, uterine corpus leiomyoma and sarcoma, compared to normal groups. Puzzlingly, NCAM expression demonstrated no significant difference between normal and HCC groups. However, we found by quantitative ELISA that the level of sNCAM in sera from HCC patients with HE ($347.4{\pm}151.9ng/ml$) was significantly more up-regulated than that in HCC patients without HE ($260.3{\pm}104.2ng/ml$), the p-value being 0.008. sNCAM may be an important risk factor of HE in HCC patients, the correlation coefficients was 0.278 (P<0.05) on rank correlation analysis. Conclusions: This study highlights that up-regulated level of serum sNCAM is associated with HE in HCC patients and suggests that the high expression can be used as an indicator.

Necroptosis is the major cause of death in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) during acute lung injury (ALI). Here, we report a previously unrecognized mechanism for necroptosis. We found an accumulation of mitochondrial citrate (citratemt) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated AECs because of the downregulation of Idh3α and citrate carrier (CIC, also known as Slc25a1). shRNA- or inhibitor–mediated inhibition of Idh3α and Slc25a1 induced citratemt accumulation and necroptosis in vitro. Mice with AEC-specific Idh3α and Slc25a1 deficiency exhibited exacerbated lung injury and AEC necroptosis. Interestingly, the overexpression of Idh3α and Slc25a1 decreased citratemt levels and rescued AECs from necroptosis. Mechanistically, citratemt accumulation induced mitochondrial fission and excessive mitophagy in AECs. Furthermore, citratemt directly interacted with FUN14 domain-containing protein 1 (FUNDC1) and promoted the interaction of FUNDC1 with dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), leading to excessive mitophagy-mediated necroptosis and thereby initiating and promoting ALI. Importantly, necroptosis induced by citratemt accumulation was inhibited in FUNDC1-knockout AECs. We show that citratemt accumulation is a novel target for protection against ALI involving necroptosis.
Sex-Related Outcomes of Successful Drug-Coated Balloon Treatment in De Novo Coronary Artery Disease

Purpose: Although drug-coated balloon (DCB) treatment is known to be effective for de novo lesions, the influence of sex on angiographic and clinical outcomes remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the angiographic and clinical impact of DCB treatment in patients with de novo coronary lesions according to sex. Materials and Methods: A total of 227 patients successfully treated with DCB were retrospectively enrolled and divided into two groups according to sex. The primary endpoint was late lumen loss (LLL) at 6-month angiography, and the secondary endpoint was target vessel failure (TVF), which included cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization, and target vessel thrombosis. Results: The study enrolled 60 women (26.4%) and 167 men (73.6%). Compared to men, women had a smaller vessel size, larger DCB to reference vessel ratio, and more dissections after DCB treatment (55.0% vs. 37.1%, p=0.016). Women also had a significantly higher LLL compared to men (0.12±0.26 mm vs. 0.02±0.22 mm, p=0.012) at the 6-month follow-up angiography. During a median follow-up of 3.4 years (range 12.7–28.9 months), TVF was similar (women 6.7% vs. men 7.8%, p=0.944). In multivariable analysis, women were independently associated with a higher LLL. Conclusion: LLL was higher in women, but there was no difference in TVF between women and men. Based on multivariable analysis, the women sex was an independent predictor of higher LLL (Impact of Drug-coated Balloon Treatment in de Novo Coronary Lesion; NCT04619277).

The freshwater green alga Chlorococcum sp. grew on NH_4^+, NO_3^-, urea, yeast extract, and peptone as the nitrogen source showing similar patterns of growth and secondary carotenoid (SC) production. However, the most suitable nitrogen source for the induction of SC was urea. The effects of nutrient levels (urea, phosphate, sulfate, ferrous iron, and salt) on growth and SC production were studied by varying the concentration of each nutrient in batch cultures. High biomass production was achieved in cultures containing 20- 28mM urea, 4.8-10mM phosphate, 1.6mM sulfate, 70mM NaCl, and 20-100μM iron. The highest SC content in biomass was obtained when cultured at 5-10mM urea, 12mM phosphate, 1.6mM sulfate, 170mM NaCl, and 50μM iron. The optimum concentrations of nutrients for biomass and for the SC accumulation in biomass were evaluated and the two media for achieving high biomass production and SC production were thus developed. The extent to which each parameter to stimulate the formation of SC in the alga were varied and the potentially improved SC production by manipulating the nutrient levels in the modified media were discussed.

Surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is of great interest, especially to facilitate their use as polymer reinforcements. Generally, alteration of the surface chemistry is performed using multiple reaction steps. In contrast, this study demonstrates that the hydrolysis of disordered regions of cellulose along with the esterification of accessible hydroxyl groups can be performed simultaneously in a single step to produce surface functionalized CNCs. The reaction is carried out in an acid mixture composed of H2SO4, one type of organic acids (formic, acetic and butyric acids are all demonstrated) and H2O with a mass ratio of 1:7:2 for 3-7 h. The rod-like CNCs could be obtained with a high yield (>70%) and high crystallization index (>75%). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that all of the obtained CNCs exhibited good thermal stability (Tmax >330 °C) which were better than that of the typical sulfuric acid hydrolysis ones. Moreover, due to the negative charged sulfate groups and ester groups introduced on the surface of CNCs in the mixed acid hydrolysis process, the resultant CNCs showed a typical flow birefringence under polarized light and CNC aqueous suspensions could be stably stored for a long time (over one month). Therefore, the present work demonstrated an efficient and sustainable preparation method for the acyl functionalized CNCs with high yield and good thermal stability.

Purpose: Dissection after plain balloon angioplasty is required to achieve adequate luminal area; however, it is associated with ahigh risk of vascular events. This study aimed to examine the relationship between non-flow limiting coronary dissections andsubsequent lumen loss and long-term clinical outcomes following successful drug-coated balloon (DCB) treatment of de novocoronary lesions. Materials and Methods: A total of 227 patients with good distal flow (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction flow grade 3) followingDCB treatment were retrospectively enrolled and stratified according to the presence or absence of a non-flow limiting dissection. The primary endpoint was late lumen loss (LLL) at 6-month angiography, and the secondary endpoint was target vesselfailure (TVF, a composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, target vessel revascularization, and target vesselthrombosis). Results: The cohort consisted of 95 patients with and 132 patients without a dissection. There were no between-group differencesin LLL (90.8%) returning for angiography at 6 months (0.05±0.19 mm in non-dissection and 0.05±0.30 mm in dissection group, p=0.886) or in TVF (6.8% in non-dissection and 8.4% in dissection group, p=0.799) at a median follow-up of 3.4 years. In a multivariateanalysis, the presence of dissection and its severity were not associated with LLL or TVF. Almost dissections (93.9%) were completelyhealed, and there was no newly developed dissection at 6-month angiography. Conclusion: The presence of a dissection following successful DCB treatment of a de novo coronary lesion may not be associatedwith an increased risk of LLL or TVF (Impact of Drug-coated Balloon Treatment in de Novo Coronary Lesion; NCT04619277).

Ti/Al multilayered composites (LMCs) with 3-layers, 5-layers and 7-layers were prepared by hot‐pressing and hot‐rolling. Theeffects of the interface on the mechanical properties and stamping formability of LMCs were revealed. The results indicatethat the TiAl3phases at the interface thicken gradually with the increase of layers. As the layers of LMCs increases, boththe grain size and the basal texture strength of Ti decrease, and Ti possesses a higher Schmid factors (SF) and more uniformSF distribution, which promotes the overall coordinated deformation of LMCs. The elongation (EL) of LMCs graduallyincreases at the expense of the strength with the increase of layers. The stress–strain transfer across the interface, the releaseof residual stress through interfacial microcracks, and the improvement of the interfacial metallurgical bonding strengthare all conducive to the coordinated deformation between Ti and Al layers, thus the strength of LMCs decreases and theEL enhances. Both the yield strength ratio (σs/σb) and plastic strain ratio (r) decrease, while the strain-hardening exponent(n) increases with the increase of layers of LMCs, which are beneficial to improve the stamping formability of LMCs. Thenumber of interface increases with the increase of layers, which hinders crack propagation. Moreover, the microcracks areeasily induced by the brittle TiAl3phase at the interface, and the main cracks deflect obviously and release part energy inthe form of secondary microcracks, thus delaying the failure of LMCs and improving their stamping formability.
