<P>Urban particulate matter (UPM) exerts negative effects on various human organs. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is a polymodal sensory transducer that can be activated by multiple noxious stimuli. This study aimed to explore the effects of the UPM 1648a on the expression of TRPV1, and its regulatory mechanisms in HaCaT cells. UPM enhanced TRPV 1 promoter-luciferase reporter activity. UPM also increased expression of the TRPV 1 gene as evidenced by increased mRNA and protein levels of TRPV 1. In addition, elucidation of the underlying mechanism behind the UPM-mediated effects on TRPV 1 expression revealed that UPM can upregulate expression of the TRPV1 gene by activating activator protein-1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). The UPM treatment also altered Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> influx and cell proliferation, as well as production of interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). In addition, these UPM-induced effects were attenuated by SB203580 and ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC). However, SP600125 and PD98059 did not alter the UPM-induced effects. Taken together, these findings indicate that UPM upregulates expression of the TRPV 1 gene, which is mediated by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and NF-κB signaling pathways and suggest that UPM is a potential irritant that can induce skin processes such as aging and inflammatory responses.</P>
Differential gene expression in Korean soybean under heat stress condition.

Soybean is an important crop with useful traits such as the high seed protein and oil contents. Soybean reproduction is sensitive to temperature over 35℃. To obtain database of gene expression profiles, we used soybean cultivars, sensitive and tolerant. RNA sequencing was performed to find differentially expressed genes in two Korean soybean cultivars under heat stress condition. The transcriptomic changes in each cultivar under heat stress. We found 2727 common transcripts in two soybean cultivars under heat stress, and selected 20 transcripts to heat stress response genes. The 20 selected genes were analysed using BLAST2GO and PLANEX. The genes were major factor in co-expression networks. It appears that these 20 genes were mainly attributable to heat stress.

The interaction of an ultra-short intense laser with an overdense plasma is numerically studied from the point of view of accelerated proton beam generation. We use a one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code for simplicity. The laser intensity is about 1018 1019 W/cm2, the pulse width is a few tens of fs, and the plasma density is about 4nc 10nc (nc !2me0/e2). Various forces to accelerate proton ions are investigated as the light intensity and the plasma density are varied . One of the main forces is light pressure, and another is the space-charge-field force induced by rapid electron dispersion. Different behaviors of the energy distribution of the accelerated proton beam are observed under different conditions for the transparency and the opacity of the laser pulse. When the laser light is mostly reflected in front of the plasma slab, the proton ion beams is more collimated by the light pressure. In addition, the kind of polarization of the laser affects the energy spectrum of the accelerated protons, and circular polarization is preferred to linear polarization for effective collimation of an accelerated proton beam.

The interaction between Agrobacterium and soybean has been studied at the transcriptome level but not at the metabolic level. However, it is necessary to investigate the difference in metabolites between susceptible and non-susceptible cultivars for high efficiency transformation. We investigated the difference in metabolites from sonicated soybean cotyledons of Korean cultivars and Bert cultivar. To identify difference in metabolites, sonicated extracts were analysed by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR/MS). The soybean cultivars were classified by susceptibility using green fluorescent protein expression. We found a difference in metabolites between the high susceptible and low susceptible cultivars. The FT-ICR/MS experimental m/z data of different metabolites were compared with theoretical m/z in KNApSAcK database. The candidate list was made using KNApSAcK and focused on phenolic compounds. These candidate metabolites are speculated to influence factors in the interaction. This list of candidates may be useful to investigate the interaction between Agrobacterium and plants to increase transformation efficiency.
Evaluation of incentive policies for electric vehicles: An experimental study on Jeju Island

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In Korea, electric vehicles (EVs) are considered as a potential solution for counteracting environmental issues that have arisen due to vehicles with internal combustion engine. Therefore, a multitude of incentives have been offered to the consumers but the effectiveness of those incentives varied due to diverse consumer perceptions on various incentives. To evaluate consumer behavior toward the incentives for EVs, this study performed stated preference experiments of actual EV owners. The experiments showed that, compared with the potential consumers, actual EV owners exhibited a greater inconvenience to charging time. For the incentives, EV owners showed different preferences to the different incentive measures. Especially, they have far greater preference for subsidies during their ownership period, such as discounts to the electricity charging rate and operation subsidies, than for those at the time of purchase, such as purchase subsidies and charger installation. These findings suggest that it would be more effective to formulate an incentive policy that reflects diverse consumer behavior toward EV incentive measures.</P>
