      • Modulation of Chelidonii herba on GABA Activated Chloride Current in Rat PAG Neurons

        Modulation of Chelidonii herba on γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA) activated chloride current in the acutely dissociated periaqueductal gray (PAG) neuron was studied by nystatin-perforated patch-clamp technique. High concentrations of Chelidonii herba elicited ion current, that was blocked by bicuculline. Low concentrations reduced the GABA activated current in PAG. Two types of inhibitory action of Chelidonii herba on GABA activated current have been implicated in PAG. One is the inhibitory action of Chelidonii herba on GABA was abolished by naltrexone and the other is that of Chelidonii herba was potentiated by naltrexone. In addition, all of two types of action of Chelidonii herba are linked to pertussis toxin=sensitive GTP-binding proteins. These results suggest that the inhibitory modulation of Chelidonii herba on GABA activated current via G-proteins in PAG neuron in an important analgesic mechanism.

        지구성 운동이 중추신경제 세로토닌과 TH 발현에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise training on serotonin and TH expression in CNS of rats. The 28 Sprague-Dawle rats of 200-300g were used and were divided into four groups: 1 week control group and 4 weeks control group which lead a sedentary life during the whole training period, and 1 week exercise group with 30 min treadmill training five times per a eek for 1 week and 4 weeks exercise group with 30 min exercise five times per week for four weeks. After treadmill training, each group was fixated with PFA and 40㎛ thickness slices was made by cryostat. To evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on serotonin and TH(tyrosine hydroxylase) expression, immunohistochemistry technique was performed. The result of the study were as followed: 1. Serotonin expression of 1 week exercise group was significantly increased in dorsal raphe(P<.001). Serotonin expression of 4 weeks exercise group was significantly decreases in dorsal raphe(P<.001). 2. Serotonin expression of 1 week exercise group was significantly increased in raphe magnus(P<.001). Serotonin expression of 4 weeks exercise group was significantly increased in raphe magnus(P<.001). 3. TH expression of 1 week exercise group was significantly increased in substantia.

        Fungal Osteomyelitis of Temporomandibular Joint and Skull Base Caused by Chronic Otitis Media

        Chronic otitis media (COM) is a chronic inflammatory disease which affects the middle ear, mastoid cavity. It presents hearing loss, ear pain, dizziness, headache, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation and intracranial complication. Intracranial complications such as skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) may occur secondary to COM due to transmission of infection by a number of possible routes. SBO is an uncommon condition with a significant morbidity and mortality if not treated in the early stages. We report a-67-year-old male patient with diabetes and untreated COM who presented atypical severe TMJ, periorbital and postmandibular pain. By computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole body bone scan (WBBS), he was diagnosed with SBO spreading from untreated COM via infective arthritis of TMJ. Through this case, we suggest proper utilization of diagnostic imaging, especially CT or MRI for the early detection of SBO in the case of COM accompanying with the greater risk of infection developments such as diabetes.

        Myositis Associated with Infratemporal Space Abscess in Patient with Myxofibrosarcoma of Nasal Cavity: Case Report

        The limited mouth opening, also known as trismus, can result from temporomandibular joint disorders, infection, neoplasm, trauma, and abnormal anatomic structure like coronoid hyperplasia. Head and neck cancer patients often complain of limited mouth opening, which is usually induced by myofibrotic contracture of masticatory muscle. But clinicians should consider any reasons such as infection or cancer growth and metastasis if trismus gets worse or pain develops. We report the case of the patient, who was diagnosed with myxofibrosarcoma on nasal cavity. He had suffered from trismus after concurrent chemoradiotherapy. However, pain had developed and trismus had worsened. He was diagnosed with infratemporal space abscess and myositis of masticatory muscles.

        Obstructive Sialadenitis associated with Injectable Facial Fillers

        Obstructive sialadenitis, one of the diseases that most frequently causes swelling and pain in the salivary glands, is mainly caused by structural obstructions. Sialolithiasis is the most frequent cause of the disease, and other causes include calculus formation, duct strictures, foreign bodies, and anatomical variations. Although there is a possibility that facial fillers directly block the salivary ducts, no cases of obstructive sialadenitis associated with them have been reported yet. We report the case of a 34-year-old female patient who complained of recurrent swelling and pain in the left buccal mucosa. She had undergone facial filler injection procedures on her facial area for cosmetic purposes several years before. Based on the findings of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR sialography, she was diagnosed with obstructive sialadenitis due to facial fillers. Through this case, we should remember to obtain a thorough history including filler treatments in the case of parotid gland swelling. We also suggest proper utilization of advanced imaging such as MRI in evaluating the location of facial fillers.

        정수장 슬러지 농축조 배출수의 망간 농도에 미치는 pH의 영향

        정수공정 중에 응집된 망간은 슬러지 농축조에 체류하는 동안 재용출 되어 배출수의 망간 허용기준치를 초과하는 문제가 발생되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 정수공정 중에 슬러지 농축조 배출수의 pH를 조정함으로써 망간 농도에 미치는 pH의 영향에 대하여 연구하였다. 초기 pH 6.1에서는 응집된 슬러지로부터 망간이 재용출 되어 청정지역 배출 기준인 2mg/L를 초과하였으나 NaOH, KOH, CaO, Ca(OH)₂, CaCO₃ 등 알칼리 물질을 이용하여 pH를 상승시켰을 경우 망간 농도를 청정지역 배출 기준 이하로 낮출 수 있었다. 또한 알칼리성 물질로서 석회석 광산에서 선별과정 중 발생하는 폐석회석을 이용하여 정수장 슬러지의 망간 재용출을 억제할 수 있는 가능성을 확인하였다. Manganese in sludge precipitated during water treatment might be soluble again in effluent from sludge thickener. If that happens, the manganese concentration of effluent from water treatment plant will exceed the limit for clean reservation. In this study the influence of pH on Mn concentration of effluent from sludge thickener of water treatment plant was investigated. When the pHs of sludge solutions increased with alkaline materials such as NaOH, KOH, CaO, Ca(OH)₂, CaCO₃, the Mn concentrations of sludge solutions decreased under the limit. The Mn concentration of effluent from sludge thickener could be controlled with waste limestones from beneficiation process at limestone mine as an alkaline material.

        Changes in superconducting properties of Nb films irradiated with Kr ion beam

        This study investigated the effect of Kr ion beam irradiation on the superconducting properties of Nb thin films, which are known for their high superconducting transition temperature (T_c) at ambient pressure among single elements. Using the Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) program, we analyzed the distribution of Kr ions and displacement per atom (DPA) after irradiation, finding a direct correlation between irradiation amount and DPA. In samples with stronger beam energy, deeper ion penetration, fewer ions remained, and higher DPA values were observed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the Nb (110) peak at 38.5° weakened and shifted with increasing irradiation. T_c decreased in all samples after irradiation, more significantly in those with higher beam energy. Irradiation raised resistivity of the film and lowered the residual-resistivity ratio (RRR). AC susceptibility measurements were also consistent with these findings. This research could potentially lead to more efficient and powerful superconducting devices and a better understanding of superconducting materials.

      • Development of a moisturizer that control cutaneous enzymes to induce atopic dermatitis

        Background: Atopic dermatitis shows repetitive scales and dryness. Controlling cutaneous enzymes that induce these clinical manifestation is a new approaches for the treatment atopic dermatitis from natural materials. Objectives: We conducted studies to find the potential alternatives from plants extract to control functions of cutaneous enzymes which involved to atopic eczema directly such as Serine protease, transglutaminase, peptidase 7, phospholipase A, acidic sphingomeylinase, β-glucocerebrosidase. Methods: More than 1,500 plants extract has been assayed to search inhibitors or stimulators of the enzymes. The toxicity of detected extracts was tested with the method of MTT assay. Moisturizer with the plants extract, which identified as potential ingredients influencing cutaneous enzymes. Results: We detected three inhibitors of serine protease, six inhibitors of DPP7, six activators of transglutaminase, nine activators of acidic sphingomyelinase and twenty-one activators of phospholipase A from plants extract. The IC50 of the most effective extract on each enzyme is 1.5ug/mL, 10ug/mL, 10ug/mL, 14.8ug/mL and 0.092ug/mL respectively. Materials, whose safety was verified through MTT assay, were included as main ingredients of cosmetic products. Conclusion: The results provide the importance of natural products as source of new moisturizer. Further study justifies its role in the management of atopic dermatitis.

        <진오귀굿>의 극적 구조 고찰

        본고는 <진오귀굿>의 극적 구조를 살펴보았다. 1970년대 연극계의 화두는 전통연희를 현대적으로 활용하는 것이었고, 이를 기성 연극계에서는 대부분 실패했지만 마당극에서는 성공했다. 이는 마당극은 판소리라는 연희 양식의 구조를 활용함으로써 연희 양식과 연극 양식의 결합에서 비롯되는 문제를, 즉 논리적인 플롯이라는 사실주의 연극의 공식을 원천적으로 벗어났기 때문이었다. 본고는 이를 마당극의 시초로 알려진 <진오귀굿>을 통해 살펴보았는데, 이러한 새로운 양식의 시도는 ‘설명’적인 요소가 들어 있는 판소리가 계몽적 목적을 가졌던 <진오귀굿>에 적합했기 때문에 가능했던 일이었다. 판소리는 창과 아니리가 반복되는 ‘긴장-이완의 구조’로서 아니리를 통해 요약ㆍ설명하고 창을 통해 정서를 강화하는 형식으로 되어 있다. <진오귀굿>은 이를 활용하여 해설자의 해설과 연극적 재현을 반복하여 사용함으로써 관중들에게 설명과 감정이입을 지속적으로 전달하였다. 이를 통해 농촌 현실에 대한 인식과 감정 이입을 극대화하였고 이를 통해 관중들은 등장인물들과 ‘하나의 시각’을 가짐으로 써 서로 교감하게 되었다. 흥미로운 것은 이러한 양식은 자연스럽게 뒷풀이 장면을 만들어낸다는 것인데, 등장인물들과 관중들의 신명이 형식적인 뒷풀이에서 생기는 것이 아니라 극적 구조 자체에서 만들어진다는 것은 주목할 만하다. <진오귀굿>의 구조에 미친 이러한 판소리의 영향은 이후의 마당극에서도 유효하게 나타난다. This paper examined the influence of Pansori on the dramatic structure of < Jin- O-Gwi-Gut >. In the 1970s, the topic of the theater field was “modern application of traditional performances,” which failed mostly in the established theater field, but succeeded in Madanggeuk. Whereas most of the works in the established theater field simply inserted some components of traditional performances into realism plays with western logical plots, Madanggeuk applies a structure of Pansori and deviates from the formula of logical plot of the realistic plays. This paper examined this proposition through < Jin-O-Gwi-Gut >, which is known as the beginning of the Madanggeuk, and the attempt in style was possible because < Jin-O-Gwi-Gut > had an enlightening purpose, so it was suitable for Pansori which had an “explanatory” element. Pansori has a structure of tension-relaxations in which Chang(songs) and Aniri(narratives) are repeated, and < Jin-O-Gwi-Gut > used this pattern in order to conveying explanations and empathy to the audience. Through this, the audience could understand rural realities fully and were able to communicate with each other by having a “one perspective” with the characters. As a result, viewers who came to know rural realities and feel empathy for farmers would go to Sinmyeong(ecstasy). It is noteworthy that the Sinmyeong of characters and audiences was created by the dramatic structure itself, rather than by format of after-parties. The Pansori's influence on the structure of < Jin-O-Gwi-Gut > had remained effective in the later Madanggeuk’s.

        The Value of Adding Ductography to Ultrasonography for the Evaluation of Pathologic Nipple Discharge in Women with Negative Mammography

        Objective: The optimal imaging approach for evaluating pathological nipple discharge remains unclear. We investigated the value of adding ductography to ultrasound (US) for evaluating pathologic nipple discharge in patients with negative mammography findings. Materials and Methods: From July 2003 to December 2018, 101 women (mean age, 46.3 ± 12.2 years; range, 23–75 years) with pathologic nipple discharge were evaluated using pre-ductography (initial) US, ductography, and post-ductography US. The imaging findings were reviewed retrospectively. The standard reference was surgery (70 patients) or > 2 years of followup with US (31 patients). The diagnostic performances of initial US, ductography, and post-ductography US for detecting malignancy were compared using the McNemar’s test or a generalized estimating equation. Results: In total, 47 papillomas, 30 other benign lesions, seven high-risk lesions, and 17 malignant lesions were identified as underlying causes of pathologic nipple discharge. Only eight of the 17 malignancies were detected on the initial US, while the remaining nine malignancies were detected by ductography. Among the nine malignancies detected by ductography, eight were detected on post-ductography US and could be localized for US-guided intervention. The sensitivities of ductography (94.1% [16/17]) and post-ductography US (94.1% [16/17]) were significantly higher than those of initial US (47.1% [8/17]; p = 0.027 and 0.013, respectively). The negative predictive value of post-ductography US (96.9% [31/32]) was significantly higher than that of the initial US (83.3% [45/54]; p = 0.006). Specificity was significantly higher for initial US than for ductography and post-ductography US (p = 0.001 for all). Conclusion: The combined use of ductography and US has a high sensitivity for detecting malignancy in patients with pathologic nipple discharge and negative mammography. Ductography findings enable lesion localization on second-look post-ductography US, thus facilitating the selection of optimal treatment plans.
