Canine Juvenile cellulitis was diagnosed in 2 puppies hospitalized in Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Characterized dermatological problems were presents of scale, crust, purlent exudation and alopecia limited on their face. On cytologic examinations of direct impression smears for the lesions, numerous neutrophils and macrophagies were observed. No bacteria and fungus were noted. Treatments with administration of predinisolone and antibiotic orally combined with topical shampoo treatment had good results for the two puppies.

We have investigated the effects of hypha-water extracts (HWE), fruit body-water extracts (FWE) and cordycepin from Cordyceps militaris on serotonin release out of human platelets and human platelet aggregation. HWE and FWE inhibited the release of [^(3)H]-serotonin from human platelet stimulated by thrombin (2 U/ml) or collagen (20 ㎍/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, cordycepin, a major component of Cordyceps militaris, inhibited the human platelet aggregation induced by collagen (10 ㎍/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that cordycepin containing in HWE and FWE may inhibit the serotonin release by suppressing the collagen-induced human platelet aggregation. Accordingly, our data demonstrate that HWE and FWE containing much cordycepin might have antithrombotic and antimigrainous functions.

7β[5-(Substituted) phenyl-2H-tetrazol-2-yl]acetamidocephalospranic acid, 7β-(5-Diphnenyl-methyl-2H-tetrazol-2-yl) acetamidocephalosporanic acid and 7β-[5-(Substituted)-4-phenyl-1.2.4-triazol2-yl]thioacetamidocephalosporanic acid were synthesized and tested in vitro antimicrobial activity. These compounds exhibited good antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria whereas most compounds showed decreased antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria
만성 간장 질환자에서 뇌 MRI 상의 pallidal index와 생물학적 망간지표들 간의 관련성

목적 : 만성 간장 질환자를 대상으로 T1강조 자기공명영상(MRI)에서 나타나는 담창구 부위의 고신호강도 소견(pallidal index, PI)과 생물학적 망간 지표들 간의 관련성을 알아본다. 방법 : B형간염 바이러스에 의한 간경변증으로 진단 받은 40세 이상의 환자 31명과 정상 대조군 10명을 대상으로 설문조사와 혈액 및 소변검사, 뇌 MRI를 시행하였다. 전체 41명 가운데 검사 전 수혈을 받았던 환자군 9명을 제외하고 전체 32명의 자료를 분석하였다. 망간 축적에 관련된 객관적 지표로서 T1 강조 MRI에서 나타나는 담창구 부위의 고신호강도를 전두부 백색질 신호강도로 나눈 수에 100을 곱하여 구한 PI를 택하였다. 환자군과 대조군 사이의 PI와 망간농도들의 평균을 비교하였다. 여러 변수들과 PI와의 상관성을 보기 위해서는 상관분석을 시행하였다. 결과 : 간장 질환자 22명 가운데 18명(81.8%)에서 뇌 MRI 상 고신호강도가 나타났다. 대조군 10명에서는 아무도 MRI 소견상 고신호강도가 나타나지 않았다. 간장 질환자에서의 평균 PI는 122.62로 대조군의 106.23보다 유의하게 높게 나타났다(p<0.01). 간장 질환자의 전혈에서 망간농도는 2.34㎍/㎗으로 대조군의 1.44㎍/㎗와 비교하여 유의하게 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). 혈장과 소변 내 망간농도는 대조군에서 다소 높게 나타났으나, 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 또한 혈색소, 빌리루빈, AST가 대조군과 환자군 사이에서 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). 전혈(p=0.489, P<0.01, n=29)과 적혈구(p=0.573, P<0.01, n=22) 내 망간농도와 PI 사이에는 각각 유의한 상관관계가 있었다. 그러나 혈장과 소변 내 망간 농도와 PI와의 상관관계는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 총빌리루빈 또한 PI와 유의한 상관관계를 나타내었다(p=0.509, P<0.01, n=32). 결론 : 전혈 또는 적혈구 내의 망간 농도가 뇌 내 망간 침착으로 인한 T1 강조 MRI상 담창구 부위의 고신호 강도를 잘 반영하는 유용한 지표이다. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to clarify which biological manganese exposure indices reflect the pallidal signal intensities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in liver cirrhotics. Methods: We examined whole blood, plasma, RBC and urinary manganese concentrations, as well as, brain MRI in 22 cirrhotic patients and 10 healthy controls. From MRI scans we calculated the signal intensity of the globus pallidus using the pallidal index (PI), the ratio of the globus pallidus to subcortical frontal white-matter signal intensity in axial T1 -weighted MRl planes multiplied by 100. In addition, we studied the relationships between PI and other measurements. Results: The high signal intensity in the globus pallidus on T1-weighted MRI was observed in 18 (81.8%) patients. There was a significant correlation between whole blood and RBC manganese concentration, and PI on MRI. According to multiple linear regression, whole blood and RBC manganese concentration reflected PI on MRI better the other indices did. Conclusions: Whole blood and RBC manganese concentrations could be useful as biological manganese exposure indices that reflect PI on MRI.

The preparation of $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ thick film on Ag substrate by electrophoretic deposition was directly studied. Electrophoretic deposition was carried out in solution, which was composed of presintered $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ powder, sodium, and 2-propanol as a solvent. The deposited thick films were heat-treated in $O_2$ at 815$^{\circ}$C for 12 hours and at 450$^{\circ}$C for 12 hours. We succeeded in obtaining superconducting $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ films on Ag substrate. Even though the chemical reactions at the $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$/Ag interface occurred in the range of 10 ${\mu}$m, superconductivity was not depressed. The thickness of the films was in the range of 60-80 ${\mu}$ m. The characteristics of the films were examined by electric resistance measurements, X-ray diffraction, and SEM observations.

One of the important applications of ㎔ time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) is the detection of explosive materials through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Most recent ㎔ spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples, where disorder effects contribute to line broadening, which results in the merging of individual resonances into relatively broad absorption features. To address this issue, we used the technique of parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) ㎔-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of three explosive materials: TNT, RDX, and HMX. The measurement method for PPWG ㎔-TDS used well-established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. All materials were characterized as powder layers in 112 ㎛ gaps in metal PPWG. To illustrate the PPWG ㎔-TDS method, we described our measurement by comparing the vibrational spectra of the materials, TNT, RDX, and HMX, applied as thin powder layers to a PPWG, or in conventional sample cell form, where all materials were placed in Teflon sample cells. The thin layer mass was estimated to be about 700 ㎍, whereas the mass in the sample cell was ~100 ㎎. In a laboratory environment, the absorption coefficient of an explosive material is essentially based on the mass of the material, which is given as: a(w)=[ln(IR(w)IS(w))]/m. In this paper, we show spectra of 3 different explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 ㎔ measured using the PPWG THz-TDS.
Synthesis of Superconductor $YBa_{2}Cu_{4}O_{8}$ by Pyrolysis of EDTA Complex

The superconducting $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ was synthesized in oxygen condition at 1 atm. The starting material with 1 : 2 : 4 composition was obtained by pyrolysis of EDTA complex, which was converted to 1-2-3 phase during densification, followed by the 1-2-4 phase recovery at $810^{\circ}C$ . The phase presents were identified by XRD, TG, DTA and AC magnetic susceptibility. Our data indicated that considerable amounts of 1-2-4 phase formed but with the 1 : 2 : 3 phase or possibly 2-4-7 as visible. As the P($O_2$) increased with temperature, impurity peak, CuO ($2{\Theta}$ = 38.8), gradually decrease, and we conclude that the 1-2-4 phase is predominant bulk superconductor under the high oxygen pressure.

The methanolic (MeOH) extract of A. fruticosa bark, which showed immune-regulatory activities, was separated to purify an active compared by means of a multi-stage column chromatography. This resulted in the isolation and characterization of an isoflavone glycoside named 4', 6-Dimethoxyisoflavone-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. Immuno-regulatory activities of the crude extract of Amorpha fruticosa LINNE bark were compared with that of an isoflavone glycoside (4', 6-dimethoxyisoflavone-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside). The crude methanolic extract of A. fruticosa and purified single compound showed 16% of relatively low cytotoxicity at a maximum concentration of 1.0 g/L in cultivated normal human lung cell line (HEL299). Cell growth of human T cells was increased up to 15%, 0.5 g/L of the crude extract added group. This was higher than a single compound added one. On the other hand, specific production rates of IL-6 and TNF-α from T cell were higher in the purified compound treat group (0.82×10-4 pg/cell and 1.08×10-4 pg/cell, respectively), compared to 0.5 g/L of the crude extract added group (0.65×10-4 pg/cell and 0.84×10-4 pg/cell, respectively). In addition, the growth of NK-92MI cells incubated with the crude extract was higher up to 56% over the cells grown with a single compound (0.5 g/L). In overall, the crude extract showed relatively higher immuno-regulatory activities compared with a single compound, probably due to the synergic effect given by other substances existed in the crude extract. Even though the siolated compound stimulated higher secretion of cytokines from human T cells.
