      • Fabrication and thermoelectric properties of c-axis-aligned Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 with a high magnetic field

        Kim, D.H.,Kim, C.,Je, K.C.,Ha, G.H.,Kim, H. Elsevier Science 2011 ACTA MATERIALIA Vol.59 No.12

We simultaneously investigated the effects of nanostructure and crystal alignment on the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3. An appropriate experimental procedure was devised for a sequential process of slip-casting under a 6T magnetic field for c-axis alignment and the use of a spark plasma sinter machine for sintering. Flake-shaped powders with particles less than 36μm in diameter stacked up with c-axis alignment under a 6T rotating magnetic field, while the same powders with particles less than 5μm in diameter showed a random orientation with no magnetic field. The c-axis-aligned material under the magnetic field showed an increase in hole mobility along the direction perpendicular to the c-axis that resulted in a 15% decrease in the electric resistivity, while the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity remained unchanged; thus the figure of merit was improved by 15%. Theoretical evaluation of the electrical resistivity according to the c-axis alignment showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Nodeless superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

        Yan, X B,Xu, Y,He, L P,Dong, J K,Cho, Hwanbeom,Peets, D C,Park, Je-Geun,Li, S Y IOP 2016 Superconductor science & technology Vol.29 No.6

<P>We report low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on high-quality single crystalline <I>α</I>-BiPd, a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with <I>T</I> c?≃?3.8 K. In zero magnetic field, the residual linear term <I>κ</I> 0/<I>T</I> is absent, indicating a full gap and suggesting dominant singlet pairing. Consistent with this picture, <I>κ</I> 0(<I>H</I>)/<I>T</I> shows weak field dependence in low field, but grows relatively fast in fields above 0.03 T (≃1/5<I>H</I> c2). Implications for the material’s disputed high-field behavior are discussed, and constraints are placed on the previously proposed scenarios.</P>

      • Involvement of Nrf2-mediated heme oxygenase-1 expression in anti-inflammatory action of chitosan oligosaccharides through MAPK activation in murine macrophages

        Hyung, J.H.,Ahn, C.B.,IL Kim, B.,Kim, K.,Je, J.Y. North-Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2016 european journal of pharmacology Vol.793 No.-

<P>Chitosan and its derivatives have been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo. It is also suggested that chitosan and its derivatives could be up-regulating heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in different models. However, the up-regulation of HO-1 by chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) remains unexplored in regard to anti-inflammatory action in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells). Treatment with COS induced HO-1 expression in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, whereas the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was decreased. Pretreatment with ZnPP, a HO-1 inhibitor, reduced the COS-mediated anti-inflammatory action. HO-1 induction is mediated by activating the nuclear translocation of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) using COS. Moreover, COS increased the phosphorylation of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal kinase/stress-activated protein kinase (JNK), and p38 MAPK. However, specific inhibitors of ERK, JNK, and p38 reduced COS mediated nuclear translocation of Nrf2. Therefore, HO-1 induction also decreased in RAW264.7 cells. Collectively, COS exert an anti-inflammatory effect through Nrf2/MAPK-mediated HO-1 induction.</P>

Octacosanol 섭취가 지구성 운동능력에 미치는 효과

안의수,안병철,김완수,이한,제세영,박기문,이수원 한국운동영양학회 1999 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.3 No.2

The effect of octacosanol administration on endurance exercise capacity was invesgated. The subjects of this study were healthy-university students to test the effect of octacosanol. Octacosanol(medication group: n=15, athletic group: n=14, 300㎎/capsule, 4 capsules/day) or soy bean oil as placebo(n=15) was administered for 30 days and parameters related to the endurance exercise capacity were measured through incremental exercise testing to all-out before and after each treatment. Both VO_2max and all out time were significantly increased by administration of octacosanol as compared to placebo group(p<0.05). RQmax was significantly decreased in octacosanol as compared to placebo group(p<0.05). The administration of octacosanol had a trend of decrease as compared to placebo group in rating of perceived exertion(RPE) scale. Although the exact mechanism of effect caused by octacosanol administration is not known, it is possible that octacosanol increases the lipolysis and cardiacrespiratory function. From the results, it is suggested that the administration of octacosanol can be increased the endurance exercise capacity.

Cutting performance of nanocomposite Cr-C-N, Cr-Si-N and Cr-Si-C-N coated tools for micro end-milling operation

        Kim, M.W.,Tak, H.S.,Kang, M.C.,Kim, K.H.,Park, I.D.,Je, T.J. Elsevier 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.2

CrN-based multi-component coatings were deposited by a hybrid coating system combining arc ion plating (AIP) and a sputtering technique. In this paper, comparative studies on mechanical properties and cutting performance among Cr-C-N, Cr-Si-N and Cr-Si-C-N coatings were systematically conducted. Adding carbon and silicon atoms into CrN coatings had large effects on microstructural change and mechanical properties of CrN coatings by instrumental analyses such as XRD and HRTEM. The hardness value of Cr-Si-C-N coatings showed about 45GPa, while those of Cr-Si-N and Cr-C-N coatings were 34 and 23GPa, respectively. Cutting tests were carried out to evaluate the characteristics of micro cutting in a vertical machining center using an ultra-high-speed air turbine spindle. Consequently, the quaternary Cr-Si-C-N coated micro end-mill in dry machining showed good cutting performance under ultra-high-speed cutting conditions.

Simulation and experimental studies of three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction from insufficient sampling data based on compressed-sensing theory for potential applications to dental cone-beam CT

        Je, U.K.,Lee, M.S.,Cho, H.S.,Hong, D.K.,Park, Y.O.,Park, C.K.,Cho, H.M.,Choi, S.I.,Woo, T.H. Elsevier 2015 Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Vol.784 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In practical applications of three-dimensional (3D) tomographic imaging, there are often challenges for image reconstruction from insufficient sampling data. In computed tomography (CT), for example, image reconstruction from sparse views and/or limited-angle (<360°) views would enable fast scanning with reduced imaging doses to the patient. In this study, we investigated and implemented a reconstruction algorithm based on the compressed-sensing (CS) theory, which exploits the sparseness of the gradient image with substantially high accuracy, for potential applications to low-dose, high-accurate dental cone-beam CT (CBCT). We performed systematic simulation works to investigate the image characteristics and also performed experimental works by applying the algorithm to a commercially-available dental CBCT system to demonstrate its effectiveness for image reconstruction in insufficient sampling problems. We successfully reconstructed CBCT images of superior accuracy from insufficient sampling data and evaluated the reconstruction quality quantitatively. Both simulation and experimental demonstrations of the CS-based reconstruction from insufficient data indicate that the CS-based algorithm can be applied directly to current dental CBCT systems for reducing the imaging doses and further improving the image quality.</P>

Feasibility study for application of the compressed-sensing framework to interior computed tomography (ICT) for low-dose, high-accurate dental x-ray imaging

        Je, U.K.,Cho, H.M.,Cho, H.S.,Park, Y.O.,Park, C.K.,Lim, H.W.,Kim, K.S.,Kim, G.A.,Park, S.Y.,Woo, T.H.,Choi, S.I. Pergamon 2016 Radiation physics and chemistry Vol.119 No.-

<P>In this paper, we propose a new/next-generation type of CT examinations, the so-called Interior Computed Tomography (ICT), which may presumably lead to dose reduction to the patient outside the target region-of-interest (ROI), in dental x-ray imaging. Here an x-ray beam from each projection position covers only a relatively small ROI containing a target of diagnosis from the examined structure, leading to imaging benefits such as decreasing scatters and system cost as well as reducing imaging dose. We considered the compressed-sensing (CS) framework, rather than common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based algorithms, for more accurate ICT reconstruction. We implemented a CS-based ICT algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to investigate the imaging characteristics. Simulation conditions of two ROI ratios of 0.28 and 0.14 between the target and the whole phantom sizes and four projection numbers of 360, 180, 90, and 45 were tested. We successfully reconstructed ICT images of substantially high image quality by using the CS framework even with few-view projection data, still preserving sharp edges in the images. Evaluation of high grid strip densities based on the moiré artifact analysis for quality assurance: Simulation and experiment

        Je, U.K.,Park, C.K.,Lim, H.W.,Cho, H.S.,Lee, D.Y.,Lee, H.W.,Kim, K.S.,Park, S.Y.,Kim, G.A.,Kang, S.Y.,Park, J.E.,Kim, W.S.,Jeon, D.H.,Woo, T.H. Elsevier BV * North-Holland 2017 Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Vol. No.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have recently developed precise x-ray grids having strip densities in the range of 100 – 250 lines/inch by adopting the precision sawing process and carbon interspace material for the demands of specific x-ray imaging techniques. However, quality assurance in the grid manufacturing has not yet satisfactorily conducted because grid strips of a high strip density are often invisible through an x-ray nondestructive testing with a flat-panel detector of an ordinary pixel resolution (>100 μ m). In this work, we propose a useful method to evaluate actual grid strip densities over the Nyquist sampling rate based on the moiré artifact analysis. We performed a systematic simulation and experiment with several sample grids and a detector having a 143- μ m pixel resolution to verify the proposed quality assurance method. According to our results, the relative differences between the nominal and the evaluated grid strip densities were within 0.2% and 1.8% in the simulation and experiment, respectively, which demonstrates that the proposed method is viable with an ordinary detector having a moderate pixel resolution for quality assurance in grid manufacturing.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The precise carbon-interspaced antiscatter grids have been studied. </LI> <LI> It is proposed for a useful method to evaluate actual grid strip densities over the Nyquist sampling rate based on the moiré artifact analysis. </LI> <LI> The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is viable with an ordinary detector having a moderate pixel resolution (>100 μ m) for quality assurance in grid manufacturing. </LI> </UL> </P>
