Role of Bacillus subtilis VSG4-derived biosurfactant in mediating immune responses in Labeo rohita

<P>This study aimed to isolate biosurfactant from CO2-sequestering Bacillus subtilis VSG4 and to evaluate its immunostimulatory effect in Labeo rohita fingerlings. Fish were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with 0.1 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing the water-soluble fraction of purified biosurfactant at 50 (S50), 100 (S100), 200 (S200), or 300 (S300) mu g mL(-1). Fish injected with PBS served as controls. Various immunological parameters, including immune-related gene expression, were measured at 14, 21, and 28 days post administration (dpa). At 28 dpa, the.fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and mortality was recorded up to 14 days. Among the immune parameters tested, lysozyme levels (36.32 +/- 1.79 U mL(-1)), alternative complement pathway activity (76.26 +/- 2.18 U mL(-1)), phagocytic activity (32.18 +/- 0.67%), and serum bactericidal activity (73.2 +/- 4.7%) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the 5200 group at 21 dpa than in the controls. Respiratory burst activity (0.386 +/- 0.008 OD630nm) was the highest in the 5200 group at 28 dpa. Of the immune-related genes examined, pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta) were significantly down-regulated in the S200 and 5300 groups. Expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-beta) as well as IKB-alpha was higher (P < 0.05) in the S100-S300 groups at 21 dpa. The expression of NF-kappa B p65, IKK-beta, MAPKp38, and Myd88 was down-regulated in the treated groups when compared to the controls. Fish in the 5200 group exhibited the highest post challenge relative survival rate (67.88%). Collectively, these results suggest that secondary metabolite (biosurfactant) isolated from B. subtilis VSG4 at 200 mu g mL(-1) can positively influence immune responses, enhance disease resistance, and stimulate immune-related gene expression in L rohita. <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The prevalence of two serotypes of <I>Streptococcus parauberis</I> isolated from the olive flounder, <I>Paralichthys olivaceus</I>, was evaluated in a total of 29 isolates between 2003 and 2010 in Korea. <I>Streptococcus parauberis</I> isolates were divided into two serologically distinct types (serotype 1 and serotype 2), except for one strain (S1091), using an agglutination assay with rabbit antiserum, and serotype 1 was identified as the dominant type (24 of 29 isolates) in this study. To identify the characteristics of the two serotypes of <I>S.?parauberis</I>, we conducted a biochemical test using the API 20 Strep kit, a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) assay, sequence analysis of 16S‐23S rRNA intergenic spacer region (ISR) and a pathogenicity test. In TEM, both serotypes possessed polysaccharide capsule layers around the cell surface when bacterial cells were treated with a homologous serotype of rabbit antiserum. However, we were unable to discriminate serotype‐specific biochemical characteristics and genetic characteristics of 16S‐23S rRNA ISR between the two serotypes. In the pathogenicity test, the serotype 1 strains induced significantly higher mortality than the serotype 2 strains in olive flounder when experimentally inoculated via the intraperitoneal route.</P>

(2011) <I>European Journal of Cancer Care</I><B>20</B>, 803–809</P><P><B>Satisfaction with mammography in the National Cancer Screening Programme participants of age 40s in Korea</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to evaluate satisfaction with the National Cancer Screening Programme of mammography in Korea and to examine the association between subscales of satisfaction and general satisfaction. We conducted a cross‐sectional telephone survey for women who had obtained a National Cancer Screening Programme mammographic screening at general hospitals between May and October 2008. The present study included 2005 women in their forties. We performed multivariate linear regression using dependent variable as general satisfaction and independent variables as subscales of satisfaction, such as pre‐screening information transfer, staff interpersonal skills, physical surroundings and results reporting. Participants were stratified according to the result of their mammogram as negative or positive. Mean score of satisfaction was above 2.5 of 4 for all subscales. Women who received positive results were less satisfied with all of subscale factors. Staff interpersonal skills were the most important factor that contributed to general satisfaction. Future efforts such as staff training programme of communication/attitude skills, ensuring privacy and explanation of possible discomfort of the screening would be needed.</P>

Laser ablation system for microscopic defect in thin film pattern was developed in this study. For the varification of this study, several laser ablation tests were accomplished. The ablated shape of thin film and the surface of base glass were analyzed by use of microscopic tools and EPMA. Today's wireless communication needs the super-high speed for picture transmission and high-speed data transmission as well as voice. The optical(laser) communication is suitable for this demands because of the very wide optical bandwidth. But to fulfill the optical communication, the atmospheric attenuation of cloudy weather must be overcome. Under the weather condition of haze, fog, rain, and snow, the atmospheric attenuation, which affects on the optical satellite up-link communication between geo-satellite and earth station, was studied in this paper. In this case, the scattering attenuation and absorption is the most serious effect. The poiting error weaken the optical receiving power, too. These three attenuation factors directly influence the diameter of optical transmitting antenna. In this paper, the anttena diameter of the earth station was calculated according to the elevation angle, weather condition and transmission rate. The specification of this paper's simualtion was the 10[W] ?? laser as an optical source, and the binary FSK as a modulation method and the optical heterodyne receiver. The diameter of the optical cassegrain receiving antenna was assummed 1[m], the coding gain was set to 10[dB], and the BER(Bit Error Rate) was set to ???. As a result, the diameter of the transmitting antenna is distributed from centimeters to about 100 meters according to the weather condition, elevation angle and transmission rate. In case of the 10[Mbps] transmission rate, the receiving anttena diameter under the condition of haze is designed below 2[cm]. Fog makes the anttena diameter over 5[m]. Rain makes the anttena diameter below 3[m]. And snow makes over 10[m] anttena. Above values was calculated in the region of 30° ~ 90° elevation angle.

To understand the effect of Y<SUB>2</SUB>BaCuO<SUB>5</SUB> (Y211)/YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7-y</SUB> (Y123) interfaces on the oxygen diffusion in single grain YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7-y</SUB> superconductors, single grain Y123 superconductors with 0.05 and 0.3moles of Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> additions were fabricated by a top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) process. Y123 compacts with Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> additions were subjected to melt growth heating cycles with a cooling rate of 1<SUP>o</SUP>C/h through a peritectic temperature (1015<SUP>o</SUP>C) and then annealed at 450<SUP>o</SUP>C for 200h in flowing oxygen. The superconducting temperature (T<SUB>c</SUB>) and critical current density (J<SUB>c</SUB>) were estimated for the three different regions (top surface (s), intermediate (i) and center (c)) of samples. The amount of Y211/Y123 interface area in single grain Y123 superconductors was successfully controlled by Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> additions. The T<SUB>c</SUB> values of s regions were higher than those of i and c regions, which indicates the presence of more oxygen at the sample surfaces. In addition, the T<SUB>c</SUB> values of i and c regions of the Y123 sample with 0.3mole Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> addition were higher than those of the same regions of the Y123 sample with 0.05mole Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> addition due to the promoted oxygen diffusion through Y211/Y123 interfaces and other related defects. In spite of the promoted oxygen diffusion by Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> addition, the large T<SUB>c</SUB> difference among the regions still existed, which suggests sluggish oxygen diffusion into single Y123 grains.

On the basis of the body temperature controlling mechanism, a thermal comfort sensing(TCS) device has been, designed and fabricated. In order to prove the applicability of our sensor, the PMV(Predicted Mean Vote) indicating module has been also developed and evaluated. It is expected that the sensor will be utilized as the means of providing information on the thermal comfort sensation of human beings.

인터넷 사용의 폭발적 증가로 인해 다양하고 인터넷에서 제공되는 새로운 서비스들이 계속 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 새로운 인터넷 서비스인 전자투표시스템에 대한 것으로 분산 미들웨어를 사용하여 H/W 나 S/W 의 제한 없는 클라이언트/서버 시스템을 목표로 하였다. 본 논문은 대표적인 분산 미들웨어인 CORBA 와 DCOM 을 사용하여 전자투표시스템의 프로토타입을 구현하고 그 결과를 비교한다. 이는 앞으로 개발될 실제 전자투표시스템의 개발에 요구되는 분산 미들웨어 선택에 유용한 지침이 될 것이다.
