        Incidence of Acute Endophthalmitis after Intravitreal Antivascular Endothelial Growth Factor Injection in Age-related Macular Degeneration

        Purpose: Antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents are routinely intravitreously injected to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Postoperative endophthalmitis, a side effect after intravitreal anti-VEGF injection, has been reported to have a low incidence but may threaten vision. In this study, we aimed to analyze the incidence of acute endophthalmitis after intravitreal anti-VEGF injection and associated risk factors in patients with neovascular AMD in South Korea. Methods: Using the health claims data recorded in the Korean National Health Insurance System database, we identified newly developed neovascular AMD cases from 2010 through 2019. Acute endophthalmitis was defined as a case of invasive treatment for accompanying symptoms. All statistical analyses were performed with a significance level p < 0.05. To find risk factors, we used univariate and multivariable Poisson regression. Results: The overall incidence of acute endophthalmitis was 0.019% (p = 0.21) during the 10-year period: 0.025% for aflibercept injection and 0.014% for ranibizumab injection. The incidence was higher in metropolitan city residents than in Seoul (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02–3.79; p = 0.04) and was higher for aflibercept injections than for ranibizumab injections (IRR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.17–2.82; p = 0.01). However, in multivariate analysis, only aflibercept injections showed a significant effect on the incidence of acute endophthalmitis (IRR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.16–2.79; p = 0.01). Conclusions: The incidence of acute endophthalmitis after intravitreal anti-VEGF injections was generally low, and aflibercept was revealed as a significant risk factor.

        The Effect of IoT-based Upper and Lower Extremity Rehabilitation Medical Device Training on Gait in Chronic Stroke Survivor : A Case Study

        Purpose: For stroke survivors, abnormal gait patterns lead to a significant risk of falls. We have recently developed an IoT-based Upper and Lower Extremity Rehabilitation Medical Device (RoBoGat) that enables continuous passive motion (CPM) training, squat training (ST), and gait training (GT). The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of RoBoGat on gait in a chronic stroke survivor. Methods: In this study, an individual with right-side chronic hemiparesis post-stroke participated. The participant underwent 14 days of RoBoGat training that involved continuous passive motion training, squat training, and gait training. During the training, knee and hip joint angles were adjusted within the range where the subject felt no pain. We assessed gait, timed up and go test, and visual analog scale at baseline and after first and final interventions. Results: After the intervention, positive changes were observed such as stride, gait velocity, and loading phase. Improvements were also observed in timed up and go tests. However, there was no significant change in VAS, which assessed pain in training and daily life. Conclusion: The main finding of this case-control study is that robot-based upper and lower extremity training may be a feasible approach in the neurorehabilitation field. It can be concluded that repetitive and continuous robot rehabilitation exercises have a positive effect on improving the physical function of chronic stroke survivors.

      • 발달장애인을 위한 센서 기반 인터랙티브 콘텐츠 개발 및 적용가능성 탐색

        본 연구에서는 콘텐츠를 사용하는 지적장애 학생의 상태를 판별하고 가상 에이전트를 통해 상황에 적합한 피드백을 제공하는 센서 기반 인터랙티브 콘텐츠를 제작하고 적용가능성을 탐색한다. 발달장애 전문가와의 in-depth 인터뷰를 통한 발달장애에 대한 사전 이해를 바탕으로 HCI 관련 연구자 및 발달장애 전문가들이 함께 참여하여 포커스 그룹 인터뷰 및 브레인스토밍을 진행하였으며, 그 결과를 토대로 학년기 지적장애 학생의 일상생활 기술 증진을 위한 콘텐츠를 제작하였다. 개발된 콘텐츠의 적용 가능성을 탐색하기 위해 발달장애 전문가 7 명을 대상으로 사용성 및 사회적 타당도 평가를 한 결과, 각각 63.9 점(100 점 만점), 4.22 점(5 점 만점)을 받았다. 이를 통해 지적장애 학생이 콘텐츠의 가상에이전트가 제공하는 강화, 촉구를 통해 실제 일상생활 기술을 익히는 것이 가능하며, 센서를 기반으로 실시간 몰입 상태를 추적하는 것이 연구에 활용 가능함을 입증하였다.

      • Lung Transplantation: a 4-year Single-centre Experience

        Objectives: Lung transplantation is currently the ultimate treatment option for patients with end-stage lung disease refractory to medical treatment. In reviewing our 4-year experience we sought to evaluate complications and survival after sequential bilateral lung transplantation. Methods: From October, 2008 to June, 2012, we performed 18 lung transplantation procedures. Underlying lung diseases were idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 6 patients; toxic inhalation injury in 5; post-bone marrow transplantation bronchiolitis obliterance in 3; acute respiratory distress syndrome in 2; lymphangioleiomyomatosis in 1, and angiosarcoma in 1. Data for all patients were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Procedures were carried out using standardized protocols. Results: Thirteen patients underwent double lung and five heart-lung transplantations. Among them, 12 patients (66.7%) underwent high-emergency lung transplantation. Early complications were prolonged air leak, vocal cord palsy, critical illness polyneuropathy, necrotizing pancreatitis, and renal failure requiring dialysis. Late complications consisted of airway complications (n=6), gastro-intestinal complications (n=7), diabetes mellitus (n=2), osteopenia (n=2), and post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorders (n=1). There was no peri-operative death. Two patients (11.1%) died from 6 and 8 months after lung transplantation, because of the infection. Conclusion: We conclude that lung transplantation is a viable option for selected patients with end-stage lung disease refractory to medical treatment.

        Plant Protective and Growth Promoting Effects of Seed Endophytes in Soybean Plants

        Seed-borne diseases reduce not only the seed germination and seedling growth but also seed quality, resulting in the significant yield loss in crop production. Plant seed harbors diverse microbes termed endophytes other than pathogens inside it. However, their roles and application to agricultures were rarely understood and explored to date. Recently, we had isolated from soybean seeds culturable endophytes exhibiting in-vitro antagonistic activities against common bacterial and fungal seed-borne pathogens. In this study, we evaluated effects of seed treatment with endophytes on plant growth and protection against the common seed-borne pathogens: four fungal pathogens (Cercospora sojina, C. kikuchii, Septoria glycines, Diaporthe eres) and two bacterial pathogens (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci). Our experiments showed that treatment of soybean seeds with seed endophytes clearly offer protection against seed-borne pathogens. We also found that some of the endophytes promote plant growth in addition to the disease suppression. Taken together, our results demonstrate agricultural potential of seed endophytes in crop protection.

        열교(Thermal bridge)는 단열의 끊김으로 발생하는 국부적인 열의 흐름을 의미하며, 독일에서는 DIN 4108를 통해 열교발생으로 인한 결로 및 에너지 손실에 대한 성능규제나 평가방법에 대한 기준을 제시하고 있다. CLT 간의 접합부에서는 건축물 바깥쪽 모서리 부분의 기하학적인 열교와 거재의 접합을 위한 접합재료를 통한 구조적인 열교가 예상된다. 본 연구에서는 ISO 10211 기준을 근거로 하는 BLOCON 사의 HEAT 2 프로그램을 이용하여 CLT 벽체와 지붕 및 접합부의 전열해석을 수행하였다. 스터드의 열교를 고려하지 않은 경골목구조 벽체와 CLT 벽체의 열관류율은 0.164 W/㎡K로 동일하지만, 스터드를 통한 선형 열교를 포함한 경골목구조 벽체의 단열성능은 0.1928 W/㎡K이다. CLT 벽체는 CLT가 구조재로써 하나의 면을 형성하기 때문에 별도의 구조용 벽체를 필요로 하지 않고, 열교로 인한 2차적인 수분문제 등의 발생 가능성을 효과적으로 저감할 수 있다. 단열재 위치에 따른 분석 결과, 내단열로 시공하는 경우에는 바닥판으로 통한 열의 흐름길이 생기기 때문에 선형 열교가 발생하며, 외단열 시공이 권장된다. CLT의 접합부위 별 접합재료 및 접합방법을 고려한 열교성능 평가 결과, 모든 접합부위에서 Metal Bracket과 Screw를 이용한 결합방식보다 Self-tapping Screw를 이용한 결합방식의 선형 열교가 적게 발생하여 단열성능을 높게 유지할 수 있었고, 내부에서 적용된 Self-tapping Screw는 기하학적 열교와 중첩되어 큰 열교를 발생시켰다.

      • Spent coffee grounds as supporting materials to produce bio-composite PCM with natural waxes

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Novel kinds of bio composite Phase change materials were prepared by the use of bio-wastes. Of the by-products, coffee wastes, which is currently consumed and abandoned as coffee as a drink, was used as the supporting material for PCM. It was found through chemical composition of FTIR of SCBW, SCPW, SCGW and that the coffee wastes were effectively vacuum impregnated into each natural wax. As a result of TGA, the thermal stability of SCBW, SCPW, SCGW and SCNW was checked. In addition, the DSC results were used to determine the heat storage performance of each material. Micro-morphological analysis with FE-SEM showed whether the impregnation was successful. The use of bio-compatible PCM by-products is economical as well as environmentally friendly and is sufficient for building applications in terms of thermal performance compared to other bio-composites.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Composites are made with PCM using coffee grounds as supporting materials. </LI> <LI> Bio-supporting material and bio-PCM are vacuum impregnated to create a complete bio-composites. </LI> <LI> Analyze thermal performance of coffee grounds itself and coffee grounds impregnated with PCM. </LI> <LI> SCGs hardly restricted the phase change behavior of PCM (wax). </LI> <LI> Dynamic heat transfer analysis shows that wax/SCG composite has time lag effect. </LI> </UL> </P>
