A Reel-Wound Carbon Nanotube Polarizer for Terahertz Frequencies

<P>Utilizing highly oriented multiwalled carbon nanotube aerogel sheets, we fabricated micrometer-thick freestanding carbon nanotube (CNT) polarizers. Simple winding of nanotube sheets on a U-shaped polyethylene reel enabled rapid and reliable polarizer fabrication, bypassing lithography or chemical etching processes. With the remarkable extinction ratio reaching ∼37 dB in the broad spectral range from 0.1 to 2.0 THz, combined with the extraordinary gravimetric mechanical strength of CNTs, and the dispersionless character of freestanding sheets, the commercialization prospects for our CNT terahertz polarizers appear attractive.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2011/nalefd.2011.11.issue-10/nl202214y/production/images/medium/nl-2011-02214y_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl202214y'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Giant nonlinear response of terahertz nanoresonators on VO_2 thin film

<P>We report on an order of magnitude enhanced nonlinear response of vanadium dioxide thin film patterned with nanoresonators - nano slot antennas fabricated on the gold film. Transmission of terahertz radiation, little affected by an optical pumping for the case of bulk thin film, can now be completely switched-off: DeltaT/T approximately -0.9999 by the same optical pumping power. This unprecedentedly large optical pump-terahertz probe nonlinearity originates from the insulator-to-metal phase transition drastically reducing the antenna cross sections of the nanoresonators. Our scheme enables nanoscale-thin film technology to be used for all-optical switching of long wavelength light.</P>

Background: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is widely used as a vasopressor agent. Some recent studies have suggested that AVP may exert an immunomodulatory effect. However, the mechanism about the anti-inflammatory effect of AVP is not well known. We investigated the effect of AVP on the ihibitor of kappa B (IκBα)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway in RAW 264.7 cells. Methods: Cultured RAW 264.7 cells were pretreated with AVP and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). To evaluate the effect of AVP on inflammatory cytokines, the concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were assessed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. The expression of IκBα and nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 were measured by Western blotting, and IκB kinase (IKK) activity was analyzed by an in vitro immune complex kinase assay. To confirm the AVP effect on IκBα/NF-κB cascade and via V2 receptor, we added tolvaptan (V2 receptor antagonist) after AVP pretreatment. Results: The increase of IL-6 and TNF-α in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells was suppressed by a treatment with AVP. Pretreatment of AVP inhibited increasing of IKK activity and IκBα degradation induced by LPS in RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, LPS induced and NF-κB transcription was inhibited by AVP pretreatment. The observed changes in IKK activity, IκBα degradation and NF-κB transcription by AVP was abolished by tolvaptan treatment. Conclusions: Our results suggest that AVP showed anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced IκBα/NF-κB cascade in mouse macrophages via V2 receptors.

Background/Aims: To identify the factors associated with time to diagnosis after symptom onset in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: Early RA patients with ≤ 1 year of disease duration in the KORean Observational study Network for Arthritis (KORONA) database were included in this analysis. Patients were further divided into two groups according to the time to diagnosis from symptom onset: the early diagnosis group (time to diagnosis ≤ 1 year) and the late diagnosis group (time to diagnosis > 1 year). Using the multivariable regression model, we identified factors associated with early diagnosis. Results: Among 714 early RA patients, 401 patients (56.2%) and 313 patients (43.8%) were included in the early diagnosis and late diagnosis groups, respectively. The mean disease duration was 0.47 years in the early diagnosis group and 0.45 years in the late diagnosis group. In multivariable model analysis, greater age at onset (odds ratio [OR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02 to 1.05), high school education or higher (OR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.14 to 2.47), higher income (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.05 to 2.08), and initial small joint involvement (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.98) were factors associated with early diagnosis. At diagnosis, disease activity scores using 28 joints on diagnosis (3.81 ± 1.44 vs. 3.82 ± 1.42, p = 0.92) and functional disability (0.65 ± 0.61 vs. 0.57 ± 0.62, p = 0.07) did not different between the two groups. However, hand joint erosion on X-ray (37.8% vs. 25.6%, p < 0.01) was more common in the late diagnosis group than the early diagnosis group. Conclusions: Older onset age, higher educational level and income, and initial small joint involvement were positive factors for early diagnosis of RA.
Active Terahertz Nanoantennas Based on VO<sub>2</sub> Phase Transition

<P>Unusual performances of metamaterials such as negative index of refraction, memory effect, and cloaking originate from the resonance features of the <I>metallic composite atom</I><SUP>1−6</SUP>. Indeed, control of metamaterial properties by changing dielectric environments of thin films below the metallic resonators has been demonstrated<SUP>7−11</SUP>. However, the dynamic control ranges are still limited to less than a factor of 10,<SUP>7−11</SUP> with the applicable bandwidth defined by the sharp resonance features. Here, we present ultra-broad-band metamaterial thin film with colossal dynamic control range, fulfilling present day research demands. Hybridized with thin VO<SUB>2</SUB> (vanadium dioxide)(12-18) films, nanoresonator supercell arrays designed for one decade of spectral width in terahertz frequency region show an unprecedented extinction ratio of over 10000 when the underlying thin film experiences a phase transition. We perform a theoretical study to determine an optimal crystal thickness and operating temperature in sum-frequency generation by using commonly-used nonlinear crystals such as lithium barium borate, beta barium borate, and potassium titanyl phosphate. The optimal thicknesses of those crystals to avoid any decrease in the yield due to interference originating from different path lengths between the two pump pulses are calculated as functions of the fundamental intensity and the pulse width. Additionally, the fluctuation of the sum-frequency generation yield with temperature, which introduces a refractive-index change, is calculated, and the temperature ranges giving low fluctuations in the yield are demonstrated in room-temperature operation.

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway efficiently regulates the energy state of cells and maintains tissue homeostasis. Dysregulation of the mTOR pathway has been implicated in several human diseases. Rapamycin is a specific inhibitor of mTOR and pharmacological inhibition of mTOR with rapamycin promote cardiac cell generation from the differentiation of mouse and human embryonic stem cells. These studies strongly implicate a role of sustained mTOR activity in the differentiating functions of embryonic stem cells; however, they do not directly address the required effect for sustained mTOR activity in human cardiac progenitor cells. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of mTOR inhibition by rapamycin on the cellular function of human cardiac progenitor cells and discovered that treatment with rapamycin markedly attenuated replicative cell senescence in human cardiac progenitor cells (hCPCs) and promoted their cellular functions. Furthermore, rapamycin not only inhibited mTOR signaling but also influenced signaling pathways, including STAT3 and PIM1, in hCPCs. Therefore, these data reveal a crucial function for rapamycin in senescent hCPCs and provide clinical strategies based on chronic mTOR activity.
Selective enhanced resonances of two asymmetric terahertz nano resonators.

<P>We studied the electromagnetic interaction between two asymmetric terahertz nano resonators, rectangular holes which have a few hundred micron lengths but nanoscale widths. We report that the dominant resonant transmission of the structures can be modulated by the horizontal distance between two rectangles due to the different oscillation strength of the asymmetric coupling at two different resonance frequencies. Our results are significant for an optimum design of rectangular holes in terahertz frequency regime for applications such as sensitive nanoparticle detection and terahertz filters.</P>
