Streptococcus anginosus is a normal flora found in multiple body sites and belongs to the Streptococcus milleri group, It has often been associated with pyogenic infection, such as periodontitis, endocarditis, pulmonary abscess and abdominal or cerebral abscess. Also uncommonly, it can cause osteomyelitis. A 42-year-o1d man was admitted due to gastric ulcer perforation. At 12th hospital day, left humeral osteomyelitis and soft tissue abscess developed, Streptococcus anginosus grew in blood culture, He was treated with intravenous penicillin and surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue which lead to a satisfactory result. We report a rare case of Streptococcus anginosus-induced humeral osteomyelitis and soft tissue abscess.

The phytochemical investigation on the methanol extract of the rhizomes of Atractylodes macrocephala resulted in the discovery of one new compound 9α-hydroxyatractylenolide (1) and 21 known compounds including atractylone (2), 3β-acetoxyatractylon (3), atractylenolide I (4), atractylenolide II (5), 8-epiasterolid (6), atractylenolide III (7), atractylenolide VII (8), 8-epiatractylenolide III (9), eudesm-4(15)-ene-7α,11-diol (10), linoleic acid (11), myristic acid (12), 3-O-caffeoyl-1-methyquinic acid (13), (2E,8E,10E)-tetradecatriene-4,6-diyne-1,14-diol (14), 14-aceroxy-12-senecioyloxytetradeca- 2E,8Z,10E-trien-4,6-diyn-1-ol (15), isoscopoletin (16), caffeic acid (17), protocatechic acid (18), 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid (19), 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid (20), 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (21), and nicotinic acid (22). Their structures were identified using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy, and by comparison with previously published data. Compounds 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10–22 significantly inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 macrophages, and compounds 4, 5, 6, 16, and 17 showed those responses in BV2 microglial cells. Especially, compound 6 showed the second-best effect, and inhibited the LPSinduced production of prostaglandin E2 ( PGE2), the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, and the production of cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in both cells. These inhibitory effects were mediated by the inactivation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway.
발효 여정실의 건강기능성 식품 및 화장품 소재로써 사용 가능성 평가

본 연구에서는 여정실을 여러 유용 미생물 B. subtilis KCTC 14549(BS), S. cerevisiae KCTC 48234(SC), L. brevis KCTC 18270(LB), L. casei KCTC 12413(LC), L. plantarum KCTC 18510(LP)으로 발효한 후 항균, 항산화 및 효소 저해 활성을 측정하여 발효 여정실의 건강 기능성 및 화장품 등과 같은 산업원료 소재로서 활용성을 탐색하였다. 여정실 발효액의 pH, OD600nm, 생균수 측정 결과는 각각 3.45~4.43, 0.73~1.21, 5.20~8.75 log CFU/mL의 범위를 나타내서 발효가 잘 진행되었음을 확인하였다. 여정실 발효물의 항산화 활성(총 페놀 함량, DPPH 라디칼 소거능 및 FRAP)을 측정한 결과, 모두 SC를 이용한 발효 여정실의 항산화 활성이 유의적으로 가장 높게 나타내었다. 항균 활성을 측정한 결과, LP 발효균이 P. aeruginosa에 아주 뛰어난 항균 활성을 나타내었다. 여정실 tyrosinase 저해 활성을 측정한 결과, 모두 발효군이 비발효군보다 높게 나타났으며 특히 LB, LP, SC 발효군이 비교적 높았다. 여정실 발효물의 elastase 및 collagenase 저해 활성은 SC 발효군이 가장 높게 나타내었다. 본 연구 결과, 여정실 발효를 통해 항산화, 항균 및 효소 저해 활성을 증진할 수 있으며, 특히 SC를 이용한 발효 여정실의 항산화 및 효소 저해 활성 강화, LP를 이용한 발효 여정실의 항균 활성 증대를 확인하여 발효 여정실이 건강기능성 식품 및 화장품 원료 소재 등으로 활용할 수 있음을 제시하고 있다. In this study, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi was fermented with B. subtilis, S. cerevisiae (SC), L. brevis (LB), L. casei (LC), and L. plantarum (LP). To evaluate the role of the resultant fermentation products as raw materials in functional health foods and cosmetics, the antioxidant, antibacterial, and enzyme inhibitory activities were measured. The pH, 600 nm absorbance, and live cell count of the fermentation products in the fermentation room were in the range of 3.45∼4.43, 0.73∼1.21, and 5.20∼8.75 log CFU/mL, respectively, confirming that the fermentation had proceeded well. The antioxidant activity based on the total phenol content, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging ability and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, was highest in the fermentation product associated with SC (P<0.05). The fermentation product associated with LP showed excellent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa. All the fermented products showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity than the non-fermented product, and this was especially true of the LB, LP, and SC fermented products. The elastase and collagenase inhibitory activities were observed to be the highest in the SC fermentation product. The results of this study confirm that antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities can be enhanced through Fructus Ligustri Lucidi fermentation with S. cerevisiae. Also, L. plantarum fermentation produced a product with highest antibacterial activity. This suggests the possibility of using the fermented products of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi as raw material for the manufacture of functional health foods and cosmetics.
여정실 추출물을 첨가한 양갱의 품질 특성 및 항산화 활성 평가

본 연구에서는 우수한 생리활성을 가진 여정실 추출물을 앙금 대비 0~8%(2% 간격)를 첨가하여 제조한 양갱의 품질 특성 및 항산화 활성을 분석하고 여정실의 건강식품 소재로서의 이용 가치를 확인하고자 하였다. 양갱의 pH와 당도는 모두 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 증가할수록 유의적으로 낮아졌다(P<0.05). 수분 함량은 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 증가할수록 유의적으로 증가하였다(P<0.05). 양갱의 명도 L값은 대조군이 가장 낮았으며 여정실 추출물을 첨가할수록 낮아지는 경향을 보였다. 반면에 적색도 a값과 황색도 b값은 모두 첨가군이 대조군보다 높게 나타났으며 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 증가할수록 높아지는 경향을 보였다. 기계적 조직감 측정 결과 경도는 대조군이 가장 높았고, 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 많을수록 감소하여 8% 첨가군이 가장 낮은 값을 보였다. 부착성, 탄력성은 대조군과 여정실 추출물 첨가군 사이에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 여정실 양갱의 항산화 활성을 측정한 결과, 총 폴리페놀 및 플라보노이드 함량은 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 증가하였다(P<0.05). 또한, DPPH 및 ABTS 라디칼 소거능, 환원력(FRAP)의 활성은 모두 여정실 추출물 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 유의적으로 증가하여 8% 첨가군에서 가장 높게 나타났다(P<0.05). 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 여정실 추출물 8%를 첨가하여 제조된 양갱은 건강 양갱으로서 충분히 가치가 있으며 우수한 항산화 활성을 가진 여정실은 건강기능성 식품 소재로써 활용 가능성이 있을 것으로 판단된다. This study investigated methods to increase the availability and value of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi to be used as a healthy functional food material. The quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of Yanggaeng with different percentages (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% w/v) of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract were analyzed. The pH and sweetness of Yanggaeng decreased with the addition of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract (P<0.05). The moisture content of Yanggaeng increased with an increase in the proportion of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract (P<0.05). An analysis of color values showed that the lightness (L) of Yanggaeng decreased with increasing amounts of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract, but the redness (a) and yellowness (b) increased (P<0.05). The texture profile analysis showed that the hardness increased with the increasing content of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract (P<0.05), but the adhesiveness and springiness showed no significant differences between the control and experimental groups (P<0.05). Upon testing the antioxidant activity of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi with Yanggaeng, the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids increased as the amount of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract increased. In addition, the DPPH, ABTS free radical scavenging activities, and ferric reducing antioxidant power were the lowest in the control group and significantly increased as the Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract content increased (P<0.05). Based on these results, Yanggaeng with an 8% content of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi extract shows promise as a health food. Fructus Ligustri Lucidi thus has the potential to be used as a healthy functional food material that also exhibits antioxidant activity.

Objective: Anthocyanins belong to a class of flavonoids, exhibiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions have been reported to have anti-cancer effects. Here, we investigated whether anthocyanins can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis in human lung cancer A549 cells, which are critically involved in cancer metastasis. Methods: We used anthocyanins from fruits of Vitis coignetiae Pulliat (AIMs) which has been used in Korean folk medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancers. We have performed cell proliferation assays, cell invasion assay, gelatin zymography, wound healing assay and western blotting to examine whether anthocyanins can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis in A549 cells. Result: AIMs did not inhibit cancer cell proliferation on A549 cells. Also, AIMs suppressed cancer migration, and invasion by supressing MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression. The Immuno-blotting results also revealed that AIMs suppressed the proteins involved in cancer proliferation (COX-2, C-myc, cyclin D1), migration and invasion (MMP-2, MMP-9), anti-apoptosis (XIAP, and c-IAP2), adhesion and angiogenesis (ICAM-1, VEGF). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the anthocyanins isolated from fruits of Vitis coignetiae Pulliat inhibit cancer proliferation, cancer migration, and invasion that is involve in cancer-metastasis. This study provides evidence that AIMs might have anti-cancer effects on human lung cancer.
