        Owing to frequent heavy rain due to abnormal weather, the occurrence of pepper anthracnose has recently increased, which affects the supply and demand of pepper. As a result, the price of red pepper powder in 2011, for example, increased three times compared to the average year. Although anthracnose of pepper plants has been controlled by fungicides until now, it is important to develop new resistant cultivars because of the reduction of the labor force in rural area and occurrence of new anthracnose strains resistant to fungicides. National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science developed two pepper lines, ‘Wonye 100005’ and ‘Wonye 100006’ that are resistant to pepper anthracnose. These lines were developed by continuous selection of progenies from a cross between ‘Wonye AR1’, which were developed from interspecific hybridization and ‘TF68’. The anthracnose resistance level of the two lines was higher than that of commercial cultivars and similar to check varieties showing highest level of anthracnose resistance.

        제1유구치의 조기 상실로 인한 공간 변화에 대한 3차원적 분석

        본 연구는 제1유구치의 조기 상실 시 공간 변화에 대한 분석을 위하여 3-Dimensional Laser Scanner를 이용하여 그 유용성을 평가하고자 하는 예비논문이다. 6세-8세 사이의 제1대구치가 맹출하여 확실한 교합 관계를 이루는 혼합치 열기 어린이 중 편측 제1유구치의 조기 발치가 필요한 6명의 발치 전 후의 모형을 이용하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. l. 유구치 공간변화는 상악은 실험군과 대조군 모두 현저한 감소를 보이지 않았고, 하악은 실험군에서 3명 중 2명에서 공간감소가 관찰되었다. 2. 치열궁 너비,치열궁 둘레는 초기모형과 최종모형에서 비슷한 값을 보였다. 3. 협설측 경사도 변화는 유견치에서는 상하악 모두 특별한 경향을 보이지 않았으며,제2유구치는 상악은 실험군과 대조군이 유사하였고,하악에서는 3명중 2명에서 실험군이 더 큰 설측경사도 변화를 보였다. 제1대구치는 하악에서 실험군이 더 큰 설측경사도 변화가 관찰되었다. 4. 근원심 경사도 변화 측정에서 유견치는 상하악 모두 특별한 경향이 관찰되지 않았고 제2유구치의 경우 하악에서 실험군이 더 큰 근심경사도 증가가 보였다. 제1대구치는 상악에서 실험군,대조군 모두 원심 경사도가 증가되었다. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a 3-Dimensional laser scanner for the space analysis after loss of a primary first molar. Six children with premature loss of a primary first molar were examined using study models taken before and after the extraction. The results were as follows: 1. There was no change in primary molar space after the extraction of a maxillary primary first molar However, 2 out of 3 children experienced primary molar space loss in extraction side of a mandibular primary first molar. 2. Arch width and arch perimeter showed no difference between initial and final model. 3. All primary canines did not show any changes in inclination. Maxillary primary second molars had similar changes in both extraction and control side. However, 2 out of 3 mandibular primary second molars in extraction side showed more lingual tipping compared to control side. Mandibular permanent first molars tipped more lingually in extraction side. 4. In angulation, primary canines showed nothing of significance. Mandibular primary second molars tipped more mesially in extraction side than in control side. Maxillary permanent first molars have increased distal angulation after extraction of primary first molars in both side.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns of the health related variables, and physical characteristics and physical fitness of the elderly people in order to provide a exercise program. The data about the health related variables were collected through the personal interview, and the data about physical charateristics and physical fitness (height, weight, % body fat, blood pressure, pulse rate, grip stength, trunk flexion, side step test, 2 min, harvard step test) of 373 elderly people living Seoul and kyungkee area were collected. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follow; 1. The test results about smoking, drinking, sleeping and self-evaluation of health revealed that the elderly people have self-confidence about their health. 2. Not many elderly people participate the proper exercise program even though they recognize the need of exercise. 3. The results showed that the elderly people do not pay much attention to the intensity of the exercise. 4. Muscle strength training for leg and the lower back and cardio-vascular endurance training was recommended to reduce the risk of varius problems caused by aging. 5. A exercise program was suggested for the elderly people.

        Metabolomics approach to serum biomarker for loperamide-induced constipation in SD rats

        Loperamide has long been known as an opioid-receptor agonist useful as a drug for treatment of diarrhea resulting from gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease as well as to induce constipation. To determine and characterize putative biomarkers that can predict constipation induced by loperamide treatment, alteration of endogenous metabolites was measured in the serum of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats treated with loperamide for 3 days using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectral data. The amounts and weights of stool and urine excretion were significantly lower in the loperamide-treated group than the Notreated group, while the thickness of the villus, crypt layer, and muscle layer was decreased in the transverse colon of the same group. The concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatinine (Cr) were also slightly changed in the loperamide-treated group, although most of the serum components were maintained at a constant level. Furthermore, pattern recognition of endogenous metabolites showed completely separate clustering of the serum analysis parameters between the Notreated group and loperamide-treated group. Among 35 endogenous metabolites, four amino acids (alanine, glutamate, glutamine and glycine) and six endogenous metabolites (acetate, glucose, glycerol, lactate, succinate and taurine) were dramatically decreased in loperamide-treated SD rats. These results provide the first data pertaining to metabolic changes in SD rats with loperamide-induced constipation. Additionally, these findings correlate the changes in 10 metabolites with constipation.

        Background: The prevalence of colorectal adenoma(CRA) is rapidly increasing in average- risk population over 40 years of age in Korea. But, there was few available data about CRA in young adults under 40 years of age. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate prevalence and risk factor of CRA in Korean young adults 20 to 39 years of age that included asymptomatic young adults who underwent colonoscopy screening at first time as part of employer-provided health wellness program at the Health Promotion Center, Samsung Changwon Hospital from January 2011 to December 2013. Finally, 4286 subjects with no risk of colorectal cancer (personal history of colorectal polyp, inflammatory bowel disease, or family history of colorectal cancer) were included and we analyzed prevalence and characteristics of CRA by classifying into two groups with CRA group (n=497) and CRA-free group (n=3789). Also, we performed logistic regression model to confirm risk factor of CRA in young adults. Results: Among 4286 subjects in young adults under 40 years of age, 497 (11.6%) subjects had one or more colorectal adenomas and advanced adenomas were found in 39 (0.9%) subjects. The prevalence of CRA in the each decade of age group was 5.4% (33/608) in 20 to 29 years of age and 12.6% (464/3678) in 30 to 39 years of age. In multivariable regression analysis, age over 30 years old (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.64-3.43), current smoker (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.15-1.92) and alcohol consumption (OR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.03-1.64) were associated with increased risk of CRA in young adults. Conclusions: The prevalence of CRA and advanced adenoma in Korean young adults was 11.6% and 0.9%, comparable to those of previous small studies. Age, smoking and alcohol consumption were associated with CRA in young adults.

        Enhanced intracellular accumulation of a non-nucleoside anti-cancer agent via increased uptake of its valine ester prodrug through amino acid transporters

        <OL><LI><P>The phenomenon known as multiple-drug resistance, whereby anti-cancer agents are expelled from cancer cells, makes it necessary to develop methods that will reliably increase the accumulation of anti-cancer agents within cancer cells. To accomplish this goal, a new model compound, Val-SN-38, was synthesized by introducing valine to SN-38, an active ingredient of irinotecan.</P></LI><LI><P>Val-SN-38 improved intracellular accumulation approximately 5-fold in MCF7 cells, compared with SN-38, and rather than changes in membrane permeability, the amino acid transporter <I>ATB</I><SUP><I>0,+</I></SUP> played a role, whereas the dipeptide transporter <I>PEPT1</I> did not. Other sodium-dependent amino acid transporters, namely <I>ATA1</I>, <I>ATA2</I>, and <I>ASCT2</I>, were unexpectedly involved in the uptake of Val-SN-38 as well. The efflux of Val-SN-38 by major efflux transporters was variably changed, but not significantly.</P></LI><LI><P>In summary, the enhanced accumulation of Val-SN-38 in cancer cells was due to augmented uptake via various amino acid transporters. The results of the present study make a compelling argument in favour of a prodrug concept that can improve intracellular accumulation and take advantage of amino acid transporters without significantly inducing multiple-drug resistance.</P></LI></OL>

      • Pyridoxine 5′-phosphate oxidase, not pyridoxal kinase, involves in long-term potentiation induction in the rat dentate gyrus

        <P>In this study, we investigated whether the expression of pyridoxal kinase (PLK) and pyridoxine-5′-phosphate oxidase (PNPO) are altered following long-term potentiation (LTP) induction, and whether Tat-PLK and Tat-PNPO transductions affect LTP induction and paired-pulse responses in the rat dentate gyrus (DG). PNPO immunoreactivity was markedly increased in dentate granule cells after the induction of LTP, but that of PLK was not. Tat-PNPO (20 and 200 μg/kg), but not Tat-PLK or vitamin B<SUB>6</SUB> precursors, treatments, increased the efficiency of high frequency stimulus-induced potentiation of populations spike amplitude when compared with saline-, or Tat-protein-treated animals. These changes correlated with the alterations in PNPO activity and its immunoreactivity. In addition, Tat-PNPO transduction increased paired-pulse facilitation but had no effect on the fast and late paired-pulse inhibitions. These findings suggest that PNPO may play a role in activity-dependent regulation of PLP level in the brain, which is involved in LTP induction and paired-pulse facilitation but not in enhancement of GABAergic inhibition. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

        Therapeutic effects of fermented soycrud on phenotypes of atopic dermatitis induced by phthalic anhydride

        Atopic dermatitis (AD), which is known as the most common pruritic skin disease, is caused by epidermal barrier dysfunction, allergies, microwave radiation, histamine intolerance, and genetic defects. To investigate the therapeutic effects of fermented soycrud (FSC) on AD pathology, alteration of AD phenotypes induced by phthalic anhydride (PA) treatment was assessed by ear thickness analysis, measurement of immunerelated organ weights, ELISA, and histological and pathological analyses of ICR mice after FSC treatment for 2 weeks. Except for water content, the concentrations of most major components were lower in FSC compared to common tofu (CMT). Thymus and lymph node weights were significantly reduced in ICR mice treated with PA+CMT or PA+FSC, whereas spleen and body weights were maintained. Elevation of ear thickness induced by PA treatment was rapidly diminished in the CMT- and FSC-treated groups, although there was no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, significant reduction of epidermal thickness was detected in both the PA CMT- and PA+FSC-treated groups. However, IgE concentration and dermal thickness were reduced only by PA+FSC treatment, whereas PA+CMT treatment maintained levels comparable to PA+vehicle treatment. The number of infiltrated mast cells was higher in the PA+vehicle-treated group compared to the untreated control. Following CMT or FSC treatment, mast cell infiltration was slightly reduced, although the CMT-treated group showed greater cell numbers. These results indicate that FSC may significantly relieve the phenotypes of AD induced by PA treatment and should be considered as a potential candidate for AD therapy.
