        Web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections with web openings subjected to interior-one-flange loading condition

        In cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections, web openings are becoming increasingly popular. Such openings, however, result in the sections becoming more susceptible to web crippling, especially under concentrated loads applied near the web opening. This paper presents the results of a finite element parametric study into the effect of circular web openings on the web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channelsections for the interior-one-flange (IOF) loading condition. This involves a bearing load applied to the top flange of a length of member, away from the end supports. The cases of web openings located centred beneath the bearing load (i.e. beneath the bearing plate delivering the load) and offset to the bearing plate, are considered. Three grades of stainless steel are considered: duplex EN1.4462, austenitic EN1.4404 and ferretic EN1.4003. In total, 2218 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, strength reduction factors for load bearing capacity are determined, where these reduction factors are applied to the bearing capacity calculated for a web without openings, to take account the influence of the web openings. The strength reduction factors are first compared to equations recently proposed for cold-formed carbon steel lipped channel-sections. It is shown that for the case of the duplex grade, the strength reduction factor equations for cold-formed carbon steel are conservative but only by 2%. However, for the cases of the austentic and ferritic grades, the cold-formed carbon steel equations are around 9% conservative. New strength reduction factor equations are proposed for all three stainless steel grades.

        마리화나(Marijuana) 흡연이 심전도에 영향을 미친다는 보고가 있으나 그 정확한 기전은 알려져 있지 않다. 우리는 최근 많은 마리화나흡연자 마취중 4예에서 국부마취시행시 심전도에 이상소견을 경험하였다. 마리화나가 심장에 독작용이 있음이 입증되지 않았으나 마리화나흡연자 마취시에는 항상 주의하여야 하며 부정맥 발생에 대한 적절한 처치를 시행하여야 한다.

        This project investigated the use of two types of thermoplastic pipes, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Poly-vinyl Chloride (PVC), as cross-drains under highways. Pipes ranging from 0.3 m (12 in.) to 1.5 m (60 in.) in diameter were evaluated under deep fills, minimum cover, and construction loads. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, an analytical study into the allowable fill heights for thermoplastic pipes and a field study to observe the installation and performance of the pipe in service conditions were conducted. Based on the study findings, recommendations regarding how and when thermoplastic pipe should be installed are provided.

        범죄 여행:

        범죄여행에 관한 문헌들은 범죄자들이 자신들의 거처와 가까운 곳에서 범행을 한다고 가리키고 있다. 나아가서 빈집털이의 이동성에 관한 문헌들 역시 이러한 경향을 다시 확인해 주고 있다. 종전의 문헌들은 범죄이동성에 반영되는 인구동태학적 특성의 차이를 규명하려 했지만, 근래의 문헌들은 그러한 특성의 차이 규명에 실질적 노력을 보이지 않는다. 본 연구는 범죄여행에 내재하는 인구동태학적 특성의 차이를 재조명함을 목적으로 하고 있다. 남부 미국의 대도시에서 체포되어 형을 선고받은 331명의 빈집털이범들을 대상으로 수집한 데이터를 분석함으로써, 그 범죄자들이 자신들의 거처와 가까운 곳에서 범행을 하는지 여부와 아울러, 나이, 성별, 그리고 인종과 빈집털이를 위한 이동거리와의 상관관계를 파악하고자 한다. 분석된 데이터는 범죄자들이 자신들의 거처와 가까운 곳에서 범행을 하고, 범죄를 위한 이동거리의 차이는 인종과 성별에서 가장 크게 나타남을 보여준다. 이와 관련된 범죄정책과 전략도 논의하였다. The ‘journey to crime’ literature indicates that offenders commit crimes close to their homes. It is further confirmed by the mobility literature on the crime of burglary. The literature in the past identified demographic characteristic differences among crime mobility, while the modern literature has not devoted a substantial effort towards it. This article aims to revisit the idea of crime mobility and any inherent demographic differences in the journey to crime. Employing a sample of 331 arrested and charged burglary offenders from a large city in the southern United States, this study tests whether burglaries are most often committed close to an offender’s place of residence, as well as if there are identifiable age, gender, or race patterns in crime mobility for burglary. Our findings suggest that offenders remain close to their homes. Most significant, there are racial and gender differences in the distance traveled, in which regard crime policies and strategies are also discussed.

        Bio-Conjugated Polycaprolactone Membranes: A Novel Wound Dressing

        Background The combination of polycaprolactone and hyaluronic acid creates an ideal environment for wound healing. Hyaluronic acid maintains a moist wound environment and accelerates the in-growth of granulation tissue. Polycaprolactone has excellent mechanical strength, limits inflammation and is biocompatible. This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of bio-conjugated polycaprolactone membranes (BPM) as a wound dressing. Methods 16 New Zealand white rabbits were sedated and local anaesthesia was administered. Two $3.0{\times}3.0cm$ full-thickness wounds were created on the dorsum of each rabbit, between the lowest rib and the pelvic bone. The wounds were dressed with either BPM (n=12) or Mepitel (n=12) (control), a polyamide-silicon wound dressing. These were evaluated macroscopically on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th postoperative days for granulation, re-epithelialization, infection, and wound size, and histologically for epidermal and dermal regeneration. Results Both groups showed a comparable extent of granulation and re-epithelialization. No signs of infection were observed. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in wound size between the two groups. BPM (n=6): $8.33cm^2$, $4.90cm^2$, $3.12cm^2$, $1.84cm^2$; Mepitel (n=6): $10.29cm^2$, $5.53cm^2$, $3.63cm^2$, $2.02cm^2$; at the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th postoperative days. The extents of epidermal and dermal regeneration were comparable between the two groups. Conclusions BPM is comparable to Mepitel as a safe and efficacious wound dressing.

        Targeting focal adhesion kinase in cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment

        Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is an integrin-associated protein tyrosine kinase that is frequently overexpressed in advanced human cancers. Recent studies have demonstrated that aside from FAK’s catalytic activity in cancer cells, its cellular localization is also critical for regulating the transcription of chemokines that promote a favorable tumor microenvironment (TME) by suppressing destructive host immunity. In addition to the protumor roles of FAK in cancer cells, FAK activity within cells of the TME may also support tumor growth and metastasis through various mechanisms, including increased angiogenesis and vascular permeability and effects related to fibrosis in the stroma. Small molecule FAK inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy in alleviating tumor growth and metastasis, and some are currently in clinical development phases. However, several preclinical trials have shown increased benefits from dual therapies using FAK inhibitors in combination with other chemotherapies or with immune cell activators. This review will discuss the role of nuclear FAK as a driver for tumor cell survival as well as potential therapeutic strategies to target FAK in both tumors and the TME.

      • Design rules for a tunable merged-tip microneedle

        <▼1><P>This publication proposes the use of an elasto-capillarity-driven self-assembly for fabricating a microscale merged-tip structure out of a variety of biocompatible UV-curable polymers for use as a microneedle platform. In addition, the novel merged-tip microstructure constitutes a new class of microneedles, which incorporates the convergence of biocompatible polymer micropillars, leading to the formation of a sharp tip and an open cavity capable of both liquid trapping and volume control. When combined with biocompatible photopolymer micropillar arrays fabricated with photolithography, elasto-capillarity-driven self-assembly provides a means for producing a complex microneedle-like structure without the use of micromolding or micromachining. This publication also explores and defines the design rules by which several fabrication aspects, such as micropillar dimensions, shapes, pattern array configurations, and materials, can be manipulated to produce a customizable microneedle array with controllable cavity volumes, fracture points, and merge profiles. In addition, the incorporation of a modular through-hole micropore membrane base was also investigated as a method for constitutive payload delivery and fluid-sampling functionalities. The flexibility and fabrication simplicity of the merged-tip microneedle platform holds promise in transdermal drug delivery applications.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Drug delivery: self-assembly of microneedles</B></P><P>The fabrication of merged-tip microneedles by elasto-capillarity-driven self-assembly is investigated in photocurable polymers, revealing design parameters for their potential use in drug delivery. Microneedles can be used for delivery of drug payloads by perforating the skin. However, existing needle fabrication processes typically rely on expensive approaches such as etching, embossing, and molding. Now, a team from Seoul National University led by Noo Li Jeon, explore design parameters for fabrication by elastic-capillary-driven self-assembly: photolithography is used to fabricate closely spaced polymer micropillars, the tips of which crosslink to form a microneedle. A number of microneedle geometries are studied, for different UV-curable polymers, suggesting the possibility of their use in drug delivery.</P></▼2>

      • 2015 Nationwide Survey Revealed Barley stripe mosaic virus in Korean Barley Fields

        <P>A seed transmitted virus has consistently caused significant economic damage to barley crops in Korea in recent years, and may be increasing because many farmers save seed for replanting. Because some barley seed is imported, there is the potential for introduction of new seed transmitted viruses, causing diseases which may spread. Barley cultivation in South Korea is expanding nationwide due to the increasing popularity of health foods, so both production and quality of barley grain is important. Although Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) has been reported previously as a small percentage of all barley viruses present in Korea, increases in imports of barley seed may lead to increased occurrence of this seed transmitted virus. We therefore investigated the virus status of barley crops around Iksan and Wanju. On several newly cultivated barley farms, we observed areas showing symptoms typical of BSMV, and confirmed BSMV infection in 24% of the samples examined. In order to understand the occurrence and seed transmission of Korean BSMV isolates, we examined sequence variation within the Triple Gene Block proteins, and subcellular localization of two of these proteins. The newly identified Korean BSMV isolates show low sequence variability and high sequence homology to previously reported US isolates. With these results, we expect to confirm distribution of barley viruses and possible emerging viruses, which will serve as base line data to document virus prevention and control measures.</P>
