Purpose: To determine the efficacy of immediate pars plana vitrectomy as the primary treatment for acute endophthalmitis in patients with a visual acuity (VA) of hand motion (HM) or better. Methods: A total of 149 patients who were referred to a single center for acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery over the 13-year study period were retrospectively analyzed. Only patients presenting with a VA of at least HM were included. Patients were initially treated with either primary vitrectomy or intravitreal antibiotic injection alone, and their visual outcomes and reintervention rates after initial treatment were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in the proportion of good (final VA ≥20 / 40) and poor (VA ≤ counting finger) visual outcomes between the groups. However, subgroup analysis of patients with a VA of HM (92 eyes) showed that the incidence of reintervention (14 of 72 eyes [19.4%] vs. 9 of 20 eyes [45.0%]) and poor visual outcomes (10 of 72 eyes [13.9%] vs. 8 of 20 eyes [40.0%]) were lower after prompt vitrectomy than after intravitreal antibiotic injection alone (p = 0.019 and p = 0.022, respectively). For those with a VA of at least counting finger, no significant difference was observed between the groups. Conclusions: For patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM, performing a prompt vitrectomy reduced the incidence of reintervention and poor visual outcomes than the administration of intravitreal antibiotics alone. Our results suggest that primary vitrectomy for patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM could be more beneficial than intravitreal antibiotic injection alone.

Objective: To assess the effect of left atrial appendage (LAA) isolation on LAA emptying and left atrial (LA) function using cardiac MRI in patients who underwent successful catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 84 patients (mean age, 59 ± 10 years; 67 males) who underwent cardiac MRI after successful catheter ablation of AF. According to the electrical activity of LAA after catheter ablation, patients showed either LAA isolation or LAA normal activity. The LAA emptying phase (LAA-EP, in the systolic phase [SP] or diastolic phase), LAA emptying flux (LAA-EF, mL/s), and LA ejection fraction (LAEF, %) were evaluated by cardiac MRI. Results: Of the 84 patients, 61 (73%) and 23 (27%) patients showed LAA normal activity and LAA isolation, respectively. Incidence of LAA emptying in SP was significantly higher in LAA isolation (91% vs. 0%, p < 0.001) than in LAA normal activation. LAA-EF was significantly lower in LAA isolation (40.1 ± 16.2 mL/s vs. 80.2 ± 25.1 mL/s, p < 0.001) than in LAA normal activity. Furthermore, LAEF was significantly lower in LAA isolation (23.7% ± 11.2% vs. 31.1% ± 16.6%, p = 0.04) than in LAA normal activity. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the LAA-EP was independent from LAEF (p = 0.01). Conclusion: LAA emptying in SP may be a critical characteristic of LAA isolation, and it may adversely affect the LAEF after catheter ablation of AF.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) has been cultivated for cereal grain which has been traditionally used for steaming with rice in Korea. Various Korean sorghum varieties have been developed and distributed for farmers and consumers to meet their needs. Korean sorghum grains have been mostly sold at higher price in the market than sorghum grains imported from abroad. However, no varietal identification method was established to support fair trade in the cereal market. The objective of this study is to develop the identification method of Korean sorghum varieties using a multiplexed fingerprinting platform of SSR markers. One marker for the waxy allele and nine SSR markers were carefully selected based on their product sizes for the multiplexing. A robust multiplexed combination was revealed from serially designed experiments for the optimization of multiplex PCR. Five varieties and two elite breeding lines could be separated with their unique fingerprinting pattern from other sorghum individuals collected over the world. The platform separated most of individuals tested in this study, remaining three genotypes contained two or three identical individuals. Earnings management at the time of the IPO is an important issue and has captured considerable attention of academic literatures. However, there have been few studies testing earnings management in the context of market condition, and when financial intermediaries such as venture capital (VC) involve in the IPO process. This study investigates how VCs influence on earnings management of IPOs upon market condition. We find evidence that if IPO firms go public in the bear market periods, VCs are more likely to inflate their earnings more aggressively at the IPO, compared to the bull market periods. Specifically, while most of studies have argued that VCs have certification effect and monitoring effect to discourage earnings management, we argue that, with empirical finding in Korea, VCs have incentives to inflate their IPOs’ earnings for harvesting high returns in the IPO year and the inflated earnings are more deepened in bear market periods.
Multifunctional Green Solvent for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Organometal trihalide perovskite has recently been considered as one of the leading candidates to achieve highly effi cient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, current PSC procedures commonly rely on the large volume of highly toxic halogenated or highly fl ammable solvents which are not favorable for the large-scale commercialization of PSCs. Herein, we employ nontoxic and nonhalogenated salicylaldehyde from the buckwheat as a both nonpolar (antisolvent) and polar (posttreatmentdissolving) solvent for the multifunctional purpose. Salicylaldehyde has a semipolar characteristic due to the hydroxyl group (–OH) attached to the benzene ring, enabling it to utilize both polar and nonpolar solvents in the PSCs fabrications. As a result, the PSC using green solvent achieved a power conversion effi ciency (PCE) up to 20.23%. Encapsulated devices retained over 80% of their initial PCE, after ~ 750 h of constant 1-sun illumination, and after ~ 1100 h under 60 °C heat. Overall, this work demonstrates that salicylaldehyde can be an alternative solvent for green and effi cient fabrication in the PSC.

To evaluate therapeutic efficacy of aldose reductase (AR) inhibition, the seeds of Perilla frutescens var. japonica (PF) were tested for inhibition of AR. The stepwise polarity fractions of PF were tested. The CH2Cl2 and EtOAc fractions showed highest activities (IC50 5.47 and 3.63 μg/mL, respectively). Compounds 1-5 were isolated from the CH2Cl2 and EtOAc fractions by silica-gel and LH-20 Sephadex. Their structures were elucidated as β-sitosterol (1), diosmetin (2), kaempferol (3), luteolin (4), and apigenin (5). Compounds 1-5 were exhibited AR inhibitory. Among them, luteolin (4) and apigenin (5) exhibited AR inhibitory activities (IC50 0.40 and 1.10 μg/mL, respectively). Our results demonstrated that PF could be a worthy natural source for curing against diabetic complications.

Background: To propose fully automatic segmentation of left atrium using active learning with limited dataset in late gadolinium enhancement in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-CMRI). Methods: An active learning framework was developed to segment the left atrium in cardiac LGE-CMRI. Patients (n = 98) with atrial fibrillation from the Korea University Anam Hospital were enrolled. First, 20 cases were delineated for ground truths by two experts and used for training a draft model. Second, the 20 cases from the first step and 50 new cases, corrected in a human-in-the-loop manner after predicting using the draft model, were used to train the next model; all 98 cases (70 cases from the second step and 28 new cases) were trained. An additional 20 LGE-CMRI were evaluated in each step. Results: The Dice coefficients for the three steps were 0.85 ± 0.06, 0.89 ± 0.02, and 0.90 ± 0.02, respectively. The biases (95% confidence interval) in the Bland-Altman plots of each step were 6.36% (−14.90–27.61), 6.21% (−9.62–22.03), and 2.68% (−8.57–13.93). Deep active learning-based annotation times were 218 ± 31 seconds, 36.70 ± 18 seconds, and 36.56 ± 15 seconds, respectively. Conclusion: Deep active learning reduced annotation time and enabled efficient training on limited LGE-CMRI.

Content analysis of loliolide in the leaves of Boehmeria nivea (Bn) collected from different region during four months (June, July, August, and September) was conducted by HPLC. The content of loliolide was detected in the leaves of B. nivea from Bns-2, -7, -10, -23, -38, -41, -67, -76, and -90 in June (5.02, 6.35, 6.93, 5.89, 4.31, 4.24, 4.91, 5.12, and 5.46 mg/g, respectively), July (4.32, 6.42, 7.72, 7.97, 4.05, 4.32, 5.65, 6.67, and 5.39 mg/g, respectively), August (3.52, 5.17, 3.90, 4.27, 3.26, 4.72, 3.82, 3.30, and 3.31 mg/g, respectively), and September (7.04, 7.25, 7.43, 7.86, 6.76, 6.38, 7.60, 6.79, and 4.77 mg/g, respectively). Among them, the highest content of loliolide was found in Bn-23 and in September. These results may be useful in determining the optimal harvest time at which phytochemical reaches a maximum level.
